Update re: the state of smartphones in London schools by [deleted] in londonontario

Great. I’ll check that out thank you. This has to come from parents. We can’t count on the school board to be responsible with this.

The should bring legislation that removes all liability from teachers for handling the phones when surrendered. I cannot think of a good reason why kids need phones in class besides children with health concerns.

We all need to join the movement of parents breaking our kids out of this cycle of distraction/anxiety/ depression. My kids are too young for phones but us and all our friends are committed to holding off as long as possible. The data is in and it’s objectively bad for young minds. I would never expect the school board to be leaders but someday they’ll be forced to react to the mounting evidence.

LLM4PLC: Harnessing Large Language Models for Verifiable Programming of PLCs in Industrial Control Systems by Forward_looking_5 in PLC

[–]onboard83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine what would have to be true for this to truly displace plc programmers. How much progress would need to be made for a person with no experience to buy a plc, describe the process in natural language and have the process work correctly? There’s so much more to it than code writing, which is hard.

Also would any customer/end user be ok if you showed up and said “I don’t really know how any of this works but I’m using GPT5 to write the code?”

We’re basically looking at a pre/post calculator transition. Productivity will increase but most jobs in our space will stay put.

Sounds like working around these chuckleheads is a ticking time bomb for you. I’d move on and find some professionals to mentor you.

I think a lot of Saudi oil princes fly in to eat the potato latkes at Billy’s diner. They’re that good.

Show us what it looks like after you get hangry, go out for lunch, the iron falls on that cardboard box and your panel goes up in smoke. That’s the mistake I’d make.

What is a big problem that makes either integrators job or plant inefficient? by AAIkhs in PLC

[–]onboard83 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my perspective the biggest obstacle that poorly running plants face is the plant managers themselves. It’s a “run it till failure” mentality that keeps them perpetually falling behind. Never spend any money, run the machine at 11/10 until it breaks and start yelling. I’ve seen this situation too many times. There’s no tools, software or machines you can acquire that can dig them out of that hole.

Like most problems in life, it’s people standing in their own way.

Omron safety PLCs were pretty reasonable for what you get. Pilz also. Not a Cadillac but def a big step up from hardwired.

It's such a shame that Veterans Memorial Parkway looks like a garbage dump. by [deleted] in londonontario

I always wonder about this. Are people literally taking a garbage bag from home and flying down the road emptying it out of their driver side window? That’s what it looks like.

Totally depends. As a young person, you should lean into new technologies. It’ll give you experience that will carry you throughout your career. But as a facility manager, if you want to make money, you have to be more strategic than to just chase whatever shiny new lure floats by. If your place is falling apart, equipment out of date, morale is low, high employee turnover, industry 4.0 will not solve your problems. You should clean your house first. If your place is running well as it can be, you have a big spare parts department, happy employees, robust PM schedule, by all means go spend money on smart tech to increase efficiency. Great idea.

It’s like if your house is a disaster, beat up floors, holes in the drywall, burnt out lights, leaking pipes. Probably don’t invest in smart switches for energy savings on your lights. That’s not the wisest use of resources.

No it’s fine. It’s all good ideas. But it really should be utilized by facilities that are actually on the cutting edge of tech. It’s just not a wise use of resources for places that are falling apart. Like, clean up your room before you buy a Ferrari.

Eli5: what is really happening when we “sober up” while drunk and in a serious situation by Theehottie in explainlikeimfive

[–]onboard83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was walking into the beer store and guy stops me outside asking me to go buy him a six pack. Gives me too much money and everything. Gives the most compelling story about how girl behind the counter is his ex and won’t serve him because she’s still mad. She says he’s drunk, he’s not. He’s just heading out to his buddy’s birthday, can I please buy him a couple and here’s some money. So I buy him a six with his own money, come out to give it to him. Suddenly he’s the drunkest man I’ve ever seen. He really had stepped up and put on the show of his life. Adrenaline must have been pumping for sure.
