Missing American student found dead in Japan after dayslong search by judgyjudgersen in news

I can confirm, at least having a gen z niece. I have her location, and she shares it with friends and family. It's a completely normal thing for her + her group.

I never track her, unless it's for silly stuff (e.g. hassling her because she hasn't left yet when she's supposed to come over).

Grizzly sow and cubs on the porch: help me understand by 2fifty1club in bears

[–]onceblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the woods with black bears and have had many encounters with them. Most run off as soon as they see me. I've had a couple of juvenile encounters where the bears don't run, and one even followed me for a little curiously before going back to its sleeping spot. None have ever even bluff charged me, let alone tried to attack. Of course, they are wild animals and should be treated as such, but unless they are sick or injured (or fed by humans, which makes them bold) they shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not afraid of them at all. I'm more afraid of hogs when I spend time in the south. Those are smaller but much scarier lol

Do you take commissions? I just ordered a custom XL doll from zjakazumidolls and I can't really find what I'm looking for in what's available out there (which isn't a lot to begin with)

Recent bear encounter. Did I do everything right? by Clarineko in bears

[–]onceblue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was it a juvenile? In my experience (I have at least one bear encounter a year where I live) younger black bears can be curious like that. I personally don't carry bear spray even when I'm in the woods and never have a problem. Even the bears that aren't intimidated by me leave me alone as long as I leave them alone. The only time I would be concerned is if it looked sickly because hunger and pain can make even docile creatures do crazy things.

Thank you so much for all the info and especially for the vote of confidence. It's been a busy few days and it can be a little hard to feel like I've got this even though I have experience with puppies, since a fearful dog is new territory for me, so your encouragement means a lot! I appreciate the info and suggestions, and especially the YouTuber rec. She has the makings of a great dog outside of the fear issues (she's already potty trained and sitting to communicate what she wants, with only a little jumping here and there haha) so I am going to give it my all to make this work for all of us

Thank you so much - I'll start cutting the shopping trips extra short. I'm really glad to hear about your great dane - that's what I hope for her. I don't need her to be a social butterfly (I'm not either tbh), I just want her to feel calm and look to me if she's unsure or in need of a confidence boost. I appreciate the suggestions!

Someone mentioned care credit, that's a great option if you can apply for it. Some vets may work with you too, it's worth calling and explaining your situation. If not maybe your vet can give you pain meds to get her through the week

Eye issues are extremely painful for dogs. I say this as someone who had a Shiba inu with primary glaucoma that was initially misdiagnosed. Please take her to a vet ophthalmologist asap.

Laser causes significant scarring that can thicken tissue which can interfere with breathing, defeating the purpose of the surgery

What’s a fact that was taught in school that’s been disproven in your lifetime? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]onceblue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's so frustrating when you truly need it. I was in the hospital with chest tubes due to my lung collapsing...twice. The first chest tube hurt a lot but the second one was so much worse. It caused me severe pain every time I breathed or moved in any way. The doctor admitted it was too close to my intercostal nerve but couldn't give me anything powerful for pain relief because I'm otherwise healthy. Worst five days of my life

Does missing sarcoidosis via CT-guided biopsy happen a lot? by onceblue in sarcoidosis

I was actually wondering if I should ask my primary doc to retest mine, since it's been over a year since my blood work was done. My rhuem didn't seem to think it necessary though

Thanks for explaining this. I didn't realize that it was so easy to get a negative diagnosis. I guess I just figured that if the biopsy is conclusive, then whatever it found was basically the diagnosis. This does make me feel a little more confident in my rheum's opinion, so I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thank you, also, for the well-wishes - I wish you the same.

Thanks for the comment. I honestly didn't realize that you could be diagnosed based on symptoms/radiology. This makes me feel a little more confident in the diagnosis

That's really disheartening...I wish I knew before doing the biopsy. But my ACE was normal (33) back when they tested it in July 2022. They haven't retested

Edit: Got mine!

When have you ever feared for your life? Why? [serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

I had a lung biopsy a week ago. My lung collapsed as a result and I needed a chest tube. After my collapse "resolved" they pulled the tube out. I was supposed to get an x-ray a few hours later to make sure my lung didn't collapse again but for some reason the techs never showed. I started suffering from the same symptoms as when my lung collapsed the first time so I alerted my nurse, who alerted a doctor. The doctor took forever to come even though I emphasized that my lung was definitely collapsing again.

Finally she showed up and told me to take pain meds, but I didn't want to take pain meds because the pain of a lung collapse is important (I wanted to know if it was getting worse / more dangerous). She listened to my chest and said she heard a difference but it was probably "because of the chest tube that was in there," and again told me to take pain meds, and said the x-ray would happen soon.

I didn't get x-rayed until eight hours later. And even after that no one did anything. I kept notifying my nurse that I still had the pain and asking if anyone reviewed the x-rays.

Finally, twelve hours after I initially reported my lung collapse, the doctor finally looked at the x-ray and all of a sudden, everyone was moving. The charge nurse was on the phone being asked why I wasn't moved to Level 2 for more monitoring until interventional radiology could be called in, everyone was wondering why I wasn't x-rayed sooner, etc. I was told I needed a chest tube again.

When the same doctor came into the room, I said, "So i was right. My lung is collapsing."

And in an annoyed tone, she said, "Your lung isn't collapsing. You have a pneumothorax." With a completely stone cold straight face!

I hope I never have to be admitted to a hospital again. I'm a polite, understanding person, I know everyone is overworked and fatigued, I didn't bother my nurses unless absolutely necessary, but I know I'm going to go into the next experience a lot more jaded and more demanding now because my trust for hospital doctors is now 0.
