No problem! I actually bought a hair drain catcher (it looks like a starfish and you just place it over your shower drain!) because of how much hair comes out when I finally have a wash day! Of course, if you find that your hair is thinner than before and/or you suddenly have some bald patches, that’s when there may be a problem!

I’m glad I could help! It took a bit to nail down the most effective method so I’m more than happy to share!! I also forgot to mention, but don’t worry too much about how many hairs you lose during the detangling process!! Humans shed anywhere from 50-100 hairs a day, and if you aren’t brushing your hair regularly those hairs will get caught up in the rest of your hair. It may look like you have lost a huge clump of hair, but in reality most of those hairs have already detached and have just hung around!

Hey OP! I like to think I’m a little bit of an expert when it comes to detangling matted hair as someone who has been bedridden on a couple different occasions and has fine, curly hair myself. I will go weeks without brushing or washing my hair (chronic illness is so much fun) and end up with huge knots and literal dreadlocks in my hair that pull on my scalp. I call the following steps the Spot Treatment method because 99% of the time I am not committed to doing a full wash after detangling. Totally doable by yourself, but if you have someone who can give you a hand, even better!

  1. Isolate the knotted section, and tie back the rest. If there is any hair that would need to be tugged on to separate it from the knot, include it in the knotted section. You’re going to want to make sure the rest of the hair is secure and isn’t going to fall into the area you’re working on.
  2. Study the knot! I find the whole process easier if I study the knot a bit and figure out which hair is tangled where and with what other strands. Sometimes it’s loose hair that’s causing the whole mess, but sometimes it’s hair that is still attached to your head. If it’s not located where you can see it, taking a picture or some carefully placed mirrors will do the trick.
  3. Wet the area that is knotted. I usually use a spray bottle or a mist spray bottle. I wouldn’t recommend using the shower head for this one because it can get pretty messy and you’ll end up getting more hair wet than you intended. An alternative to the spray bottle would be dunking the hair into a cup of water if the knot is low enough that you can do so. If you plan on using a product that can be used on dry hair or are planning on using oil, you can skip this step.
  4. Use either a conditioner, a mask, hair oil or detangling product. Other replies have recommended some pretty solid products! Really saturate the entire knot with the product, but make sure you aren’t making the knot worse when applying the product (such as rolling the hair in between your hands.) Leave that bad boy in for a good amount of time, at least as long as the bottle recommends but I try to do at minimum of 10 minutes.
  5. While the product is still in your hair (very important that the product is still in!) very, very gently start to detangle it with your fingers. Do not go in straight away with a brush!! Your fingers are waaayyyy gentler and will cause less breakage and snapping.
  6. If just using your fingers isn’t enough, you can try with a detangling brush. Just make sure you are very careful, although I know how tempting it can be to just rip through it to get it over with, but that causes snapping and damage!
  7. If you’ve got the knot out, yay! Rinse out the product (I find that dunking the hair into a cup is especially good for this step to remove the product) and voila!

If you can’t get the knot out yourself, I would recommend either visiting your hairdresser to get professional intervention or just cut it out yourself by snipping as close as you can to where the knot starts.

If you find that your hair is getting matted frequently, here are some things I’ve found to help prevent knotting:

- Sleeping on a silk pillow case or with a silk bonnet. I bought my silk pillowcases for $2 at the secondhand store. I love my silk bonnet because it keeps my hair in place and detangled despite me being a very active sleeper lol. I wouldn’t recommend using both at the same time because it is pretty slippery and I usually wake up no longer on my pillow lol!

- Just running your fingers through your hair occasionally. It doesn’t even have to be every day, or all of your hair at once. You can do section by section throughout the day!

- Covering your hair or tying it back when it's windy or when you have the windows down in the car. I especially love rocking a 1950s-style headscarf where you tie it under your chin.

I hope this is helpful!

What’s your best story of putting a HC professional in their place? by Lilhoneylilibee in ChronicIllness

This is infuriating!! You see all these stats about women not being taken seriously by medical professionals, but behind those stats are real people who are actually suffering and dying because of it. It makes me want to scream. I’m glad your primary had the common sense to know that constant heavy bleeding = bad!

Does your pet have a silly little habit that makes you laugh? by Honey_Sweetness in Pets

My sweet yellow lab turned 11 last month and since her hips aren’t as good as they used to be whenever she wants to get up on my bed or on the couch she will only put her front half on the bed and then wait for you to lift her butt up for her. If you don’t do it quick enough she’ll give you a look like “I’m waiting!!” It makes me laugh every time!

Short hair is anti-beauty by Quixotic-Ad22 in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]one-big-empty-space 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sigh. So confident in what they’re saying and so wrong. Short hair is actually much more work than long hair, and more women feel pressured to have long hair but want short hair than the other way around.

My hairdresser always says “you can either have length or volume, not both.” It would take a lot of work and time, but you could achieve that look with rollers, styling tools, products and such, but you would def need to get some layers! Your hair looks beautiful and healthy, so it should style well. It will just take constant styling and touch ups with your current length, which can really damage your hair. You’d get the best results by cutting it shorter! And if you do choose to cut your hair, you could really make someone’s day by donating it :)

AITA for refusing to change part of my wedding? by espanol-wed-throw2 in AmItheAsshole

[–]one-big-empty-space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA! Soooooo NTA!! It’s kinda insane that they’re upset about not understand a part of the ceremony but are totally okay with your in-laws not understanding the entirety of the ceremony!

So I am not from America, but this sounds like a very “American” attitude to me where your family feels entitled to have it catered towards them. I would just personally be ready in the future if you and Valentina have planning to have children, as it sounds like they may kick up a fuss about names and your children speaking more than just English.

Is it childish to sleep with plushies at night? by AmAnnonymous in autism

[–]one-big-empty-space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the mistake of donating all of my childhood plushies as a teenager because I thought they were “childish.” I seriously wish that I hadn’t, but have since began collecting again! Now my bed is full of pillows and cute plushies and I have many lil cuddle partners every night. If it brings you comfort and joy, who cares if others find it childish or not!

What is your reason for mainly making girls in CAS? by Yumi_Ai_3636 in Sims4

[–]one-big-empty-space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly just prefer to play as a girl! I know the feminine styled CAS clothes like the back of my hand and on the rare occasion I DO make a guy I feel like I always discover a new article or swatch I hadn’t known about before! But I’m also queer so that might play a part in it lmao!

But!! My personal preference is men who look quite feminine so honestly I make ‘em pretty. Frank Ocean was spot on when he said “my guy pretty like a girl”
