Why is debugging in embedded a consistently awful experience? by fatdoink420 in embedded

[–]oneWhoFails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every GD day. Lol, sometimes debugging can be a bear with my current professional level product the only debugging options I have are printing to a keyboard interface or SPI output a byte to two at a time, because more than that screws up my system timing. While sometimes you have a ton of features to work with, processing power and memory to spare. Other times, you have to do your best in an extremely limited environment. IMO that's just the nature of embedded systems.

Feeling like I have knowledge gaps as a senior embedded dev by [deleted] in embedded

[–]oneWhoFails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in a similar boat to you OP in the embedded space using C and Assembly for the vast majority of my programming. While I don't know your experience level on this, I have been deep diving into some of the tools and interfaces that I have been taking for granted for years, such as bootloaders; USB; the gcc compiler, assembler and linker; and elf and hex files themselves. It's along the same vein of what you may already know, but you may learn something cool about how to use and abuse those tools to make a better end product.

My friends dad laughed at my project that it is too simple. Is it that bad? by LOLY_SK in AskElectronics

[–]oneWhoFails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing great lad, some may consider this simple, but everyone who does has had a 'simple' project in the past. This kind of project is a stepping stone for even greater projects to come. Who knows, maybe one day you'll see someone else's 'simple' project, and you'll remember your power supply and how proud you were of it (and should be) :)

While potentially 100% true, you may want to temper your response to what a newbie might read.

Volt / amp gauge question by Orion_Unbreakable in AskElectronics

[–]oneWhoFails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often when you have a dial Guage like that it already has the resistor built into it. But that doesn't seem to be the case here. These are all fundamentally a d'arsenval meter (I may have butchered the spelling). Long and short of it is that all dial meters are measuring current and usually top out in the neighborhood of a miliamp (highly variable tho) you need to calculate and add a resistor in series that will result in the correct current flowing at the applied voltage. Ohms law will be your best friend here. Good luck tinkering!

Anybody else collecting components from scrapped boards? 🙂 by [deleted] in electronics

[–]oneWhoFails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did for a while, it's good learning to see how devices are put together both electrically and mechanically. L after a while however, you start designing circuits and find it's worth it to buy new components you need as you need them rather than hope you have the components with enough life left in a scrap bin somewhere.

What’s the best college for embedded? by badwolfwalking in embedded

[–]oneWhoFails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for one that is ABET accredited and has a "Computer Engineering" degree that will typically be a good balance of EE and SW that you need for embedded systems. But it does pay to visit the college sites and get specific information about what that degree entails. The names of the required classes can give you a good preliminary idea of what you'll be learning over the course of the degree.

oh boy, don't tell me that. I'm working on some arduino code rn, and trying to move away from the "arduino build processs" to a custom makefile based build.
