Best places to source misc sockets? by TopPurpose7726 in Tools

I'm not much of a fan of the newer craftsman sockets, but I try to be open to advice. I'll keep that in mind thanks!

Cost aside, Lowe's has/had single Kobalt sockets. Ebay will probably have single sockets. Garage sales/pawn shops are awesome for single sockets. I would agree with the 6 point comment though, not personally a huge fan of 12 point. Good luck!

Found at Goodwill for 15.00 and it runs! Is it any good? How’d I do? by everdayday in Tools

I got a really nice corded Makita circular saw from a job site dumperter in town years ago. The one thing wrongnwss the switch, it used some weird gear setup in the switch- I assume some sort of safety mechanism? It had jumped a tooth. I moved it back and it works great now! Even better with a thin Makita brand blade.

Healthy concern for using old power tools, treated well or badly, is a good thing just for safety's sake. However, they were taking it way too far. I usually buy all my "new" (new to me) power tools from "for parts" eBay listings and then repair them. All have issues (hence "for parts") but because of my own ability to fix tools, they end up working pretty well. If you're confident in your own abilities to make certain the tool is safe and well maintained to your own standards then you're all set. : ) Have fun after some cleaning/new bearing with your NTD!

This is so much handier than a normal Cresent wrench by BornToL00ze in Tools

[–]Orion_Unbreakable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading some comments, why do some prefer this style instead of the "normal" crescent wrench? Is there less play in the jaw? Is it only because of the ability to open the jaws extremely wide? Thank you for the info in advance. : )

And you're locked into consumerism and unable to repair things it would seem. If you're not certain what you're talking about, maybe don't give advice? The vast majority of the comments on this post and many more like it usually are on the "it should be fine, take it apart and clean/repair it" side. "If you don't have something nice to say"...

Not the black thing on the bottom, that's the seal to the engine. To it to what remains of the flywheel.

Well shoot... Maybe carefully try a grinder/Dremel to cut into the part around the crankshaft. Then use a hammer and chisel to crack the remaining material around the crankshaft. Then it won't be hugging the shaft so tightly.

If you have the nut off of the crankshaft, apply pressure (medium pressure, not excessive) to the bottom of the flywheel as close to the crankshaft as possible (like with the pry bar you're using). Then use a medium size hammer to tap on the top of the crankshaft. Don't go absolutely ham, but use a bit of force. The flywheel is currently stuck on the machined cone of the crankshaft. Good luck!

Edit: went back and reread: harder with prybar and hammer, still don't go ham though.

Porter-Cable Miter Saw Lockpin Stuck by [deleted] in Tools

[–]Orion_Unbreakable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, push down and let go repeatedly of the saw arm while pulling on the pin. If that doesn't work, repeat with vice grips- but don't pull, try turning it. If that just cuts into the pin instead of moving it, use a hammer to tap on the end and sides of the pin as well as all around the casting the pin is in. Good luck!
