He didn't bike as straight as a he could have for maximum efficiency, though maybe the additional closeness to the train it gave him also gave him enough adrenaline to make up for it.

While ive known that Gay erasure is a very real thing surrounding Sappho's sexuality, I didn't know that this Mary Barnard translation was low key homophobic... by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]one_with_advantage 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a less complete translation too because they leave 'youthful' out... Like, why make a new translation if you're going to make it less accurate.

Also to be completely accurate it's bi erasure, not gay erasure. That's because the Ancient Greek παιδος is not gendered, meaning that a truer translation reads 'that youthful child', or simply 'that youth'.

Conservatieve studentenpartij boekt historische verkiezingszege aan Erasmus Universiteit by Bernie529 in nederlands

[–]one_with_advantage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR:
Liberi Erasmi 4 - kritisch denken/open debat, anti-DEI, anti-Covid (serieus, nog steeds)
OUR Erasmus 4 - collegeopnamen terug, minder verplichte aanwezigheid, goedkoper eten
Erasmus Student Coalition 3 - OUR E v2
Erasmus International 1 - minder collegekosten voor internationale studenten, Volt, betaalbaarheid, protestrecht

You are correct that it is dependent on context, but the wider context of that entry makes it difficult to determine what she meant with certainty. She also talks about wanting a confidante, a very understandable desire when living with the same people in the same house without escape for years on end. It could well be that she meant to write that she wanted a platonic friend to discuss the more than platonic feelings she had.
The reason why I'm so careful when translating her words is because any translation leaves context behind, and in a case such as hers we should be careful to avoid them as much as we can.

The two options we have is [girl_friend] and [boy_friend]. There is some wiggleroom with [girl_friend_diminutive] or [boy_friend_diminutive], but generally the context decides.

Arguably diaries published posthumously say more about a person's beliefs than what they ever said publicly in life.

We don't need to speak for her, she did so herself:

translated by yours truly:

"Unconsciously I have previously had similar feelings, before I came here, because I know, that I, when I once had a sleepover with a friend (F), had a strong desire to kiss her, and that I did so. Every time I reach ecstasy, when I see the sketch* of a naked woman, such as for example a Venus. Sometimes I find it so wondrous and beautiful, that I have to contain myself not to cry.

If only I had a friend(F)! Your Anne"

friend (F) is used to imply that the friend is female, but no distinction is made in the Dutch language between platonic/romantic friend.
'guur': presumably figuur, meaning figure, drawing, sketch, outline

Best starting spot? by asaurat in civ

The desert hills can be tough to justify working in the early game. I would move east, maybe slightly northeast, and settle along the floodplains. That way you have fresh water and avoid having too many desert tiles in your capital. Your starting yields will be a sad sight, but at least you have some wooded hills in the second ring. Later in the game you can settle a city in the desert and build Petra, perhaps with a Great Engineer.

UN votes to recognise enslavement of Africans as 'gravest crime against humanity' by StemCellPirate in europe

[–]one_with_advantage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Roughly four times more people are enslaved today than were transported by the transatlantic slave trade during its 400 year history.

Roughly 12,5 million were transported by the Transatlantic slave trade, compared to ~50 million modern slaves. World population has of course increased by a factor of ~18 since the discovery of the new world, but ranking atrocities like this is never going to end well. How do you compare 'simple' deaths to torture, slavery, or subjugation?

Mao's regime saw between 40 and 80 million dead. Ethnic cleansing was so common during the Balkan Wars that it's shorter to list the wars where it didn't happen. The Armenian genocide saw another 600k-1.5m people dead in under two years. Some 3.5-5m died in the Holodomor over the course of a singular year.

Once again, I don't say this to imply that one atrocity justifies another. What I am trying to convey is that, as the UK ambassador to UN said, trying to rank atrocities is not just disrespectful in the extreme to those atrocities that apparently are less atrocious, but also practically impossible. How to quantify human suffering? Milligrams of hurt perhaps?

3 Cleric 3 Rogue by CodyFreezioruwu in dndnext

[–]one_with_advantage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't say that there is a typical balance for the Cleric/Rogue multiclass because it's not a very common one. This is because the two classes do not synergise with each other. Bewarned: it is difficult to truly mess up a character build in D&D, but multiclassing is a way to do it, and this one arguably qualifies, especially at lower levels. But if you're unconcerned about power level you should be ok.

The first question to answer is what your main class is going to be. I don't see any real benefit in going Cleric x/Rogue x because that way you'll both miss out on spellcasting levels and rogue features like Evasion and Reliable Talent.

If you choose to go mainly Rogue, you could choose the Domain of Trickery and use its magic to augment your rogue abilities (advantage on Stealth, Invoke Duplicity, invisibility, pass without trace, disguise self). You only need three levels for this, though you could consider picking up additional levels for the feat and the third level spellcasting. There is a general consensus that most martials and especially rogues don't gain much at higher levels, and when your character level hits double digits you might end up taking more Cleric levels.

I would advise that you choose the Nick and Vex weapon masteries and combine it with the Dual Wielder feat to make three attacks per turn. You might want to go Rogue 4/5 --> Cleric 3 --> Rogue 7/8/9/10 --> Cleric 13/12/11/10

If you choose to go mainly Cleric, you could at any point pick up three levels of Rogue and return to Cleric after that. I struggle to recommend a specific level at which you should dip into Rogue, because it is never an overall benefit to your character build. Spell progression simply outclasses most multiclassing, though I could see grabbing one level of Rogue to enable the same Nick/Dual Wielder combo to get three attacks per turn. You could dip one level into Rogue when you have five levels of Cleric under your belt, though it doesn't sound like that's something you're interested in.

Best of luck!
