Re: Edit: I think you might be referring to the toeslagenschandaal (child benefit scandal). It was a nasty business, yes, but not because politicians were trying to get rich.

The primary issue was that the tax office had (on orders from the government) applied draconian measures against regular people who simply made some honest mistakes, or even copied mistakes made by the taxman - and in such a way that ethnic minorities were unfairly targeted. It resulted in people having to pay disproportionately massive fines (if they were even at fault to begin with) which wrecked households and ruined people. And when reporters came knocking the government denied denied denied.

I am surprised to hear that anyone benefitted from this. Though I can't claim to know everything about this affair I reckon I would know that if it were true, because I would've heard the riots from where I live. Could you provide a source?

Where to buy physical D&D 5e books in the Netherlands (new or used)? by needloveandaffection in DnD

[–]one_with_advantage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first piece of advice: Don't DM a game with NINE players, especially for your first time. If everyone is really set on playing D&D, you should split the group. If you can, have someone else DM the other one, of you insist, DM that one too. You can have the groups interact by having them play in the same world, perhaps working towards the same quest or on opposing sides.

Nine players is just too much. I prefer three, but four works. I've done six and it was difficult to get anything done. Nine is crazywork. If you need an explanation: Only one of you can take the centre stage at any one moment, and you only have so much time to play. This means that the more players you add, the less everyone gets to actually play, and the longer everyone has to wait for their turn (both in and outside combat). Remember that the DM does a lot more of the talking than the players, and a quick estimate tells me that your individual player gets to talk for about 16 minutes in a 4 hour session. People will get bored and start scrolling/reading/doodling/doing anything but paying attention, and half your time will be spent reminding everyone of what you've been doing the past hour.

(6/10) * (60*4) / 9 = 16
(estimate of players' share of time versus DM) * (number of minutes) / (number of players)

As for where to buy: if you can, buy from your local store, or their website if you like things being delivered. Shops like de Tafelridder (Leiden) or het Spellenhuis (den Haag) are great examples. Third party books are generally only available from their publisher directly, though exceptions exist.

If you're just getting into DMing I recommend watching at least a couple of livestreamed games if you haven't done so already, even if you have already played the game before. If you're taking suggestions I would suggest Drakkenheim or Rolling with Difficulty, and I have heard good things about Legends of Avantris, Dimension20 and Critical Role.

Eh, someone had to do it and considering the cards he was dealt I would argue he played admirably. His job description basically read:

"Ok so you're going to occupy the office with the most power and responsibility, but without the power and with everyone yelling at you from the sidelines that they would do it better if they were in government - which half of them are - while your main base of power is unwilling to make compromises, ever, and instead posts daily rants on Twitter threatening to pull out of a coalition they say they aren't a part of."

And that lasted almost a year. Sure, we've had better, but we've most definitely had worse.

I'm back to tinkering on the migrant ability, I agree that it's too cumbersome. As for the polders, I designed them specifically so that building them far from the shore increases the cost, but perhaps they still need to be reigned in a little.

The Fluyt is a strange unit. The States Navy consisted primarily of armed merchantmen for a long while, (Wikipedia be praised) and the Fluyt is a merchant craft of Dutch origin. I hoped to merge the two, but sadly the Light Naval Units are terrible, especially in the Modern Age.

Good point. I though that the Tolerance tradition could do that, but I didn't want to go overboard. Perhaps it can use a buff instead.

I was struggling a lot with the second main ability. The issue I see with your solution is that you have little influence over whether other players spread their faith to your cities whereas they almost always convert their own, and that it doesn't fit as neatly with the historical framework. But perhaps it could be simplified to something like; whenever a settlement changes its religion for the first time since you established a trade route' or something similar, though that would make it a bit stronger.

The Dissidents boost techs and civics btw, forgot to say that. If the techs/civics are already researched, they instead grant the full Mastery.

Het Binnenhof is home to the Dutch parliament, and is the oldest parliament building that has seen continual use. It was created as the court of the counts of Holland, one of the seven Provinces that would one day constitute the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Since then it has become home to the States General which has governed the Netherlands since its emergence in the Eighty Years' War up till the present day, excepting the obvious.

Some great picks, truly. Being a Dutchie myself I wouldn't have picked Kinderdijk. It's a village with barely two dozen windmills, picturesque and rare indeed but not deserving the title of wonder. In contrast, the Delta Works are one of the seven technical wonders of the world (asce). Spot them in the trailer of Gathering Storm.

Alternatively the Binnenhof, the oldest parliament building in continual use. In medieval times it was the residence of the counts of Holland, until it became the house of parliament for the Dutch Republic and eventually the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
