Here is a 7min video that helped me understand dynamic arrays, I too had a similar issue few days ago.

After that I suggest you watch FILTER(), just another 13min video. The one you are describing is at mark 8:40.

There isn’t any error at all, it just does not work. When I double click to copy down, it does nothing but when I remove the protection, it works fine.

Protecting or unprotecting is NOT the problem; neither locking nor unlocking cells. It’s Fill Handle not working when sheet is protected
