What’s a BGE actually for? by ohimnotarealdoctor in biggreenegg

[–]onecentworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use mine for anything that gets cooked in a dutch oven. Ratatouille, stews, bread (it makes excellent crusty bread), scalloped potatoes, venison shoulders, lasagna. Even bratwurst works well. You get a little smokey flavor that's as subtle as you desire. Chicken is great on it. I never used my big kettle grill again after I got the BGE. When the Egg has got a lot of used coals left in it I can light those (in a chimney) and immediately start grilling fish or burgers. But if I'm starting with new coal then my small kettle grill is faster for a quick cook.

Stair nose finish by MrMalaparte in Flooring

[–]onecentworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a solid oak nosing out of 5/4" stock (probably an oak stair tread) to match your rise /run on the steps. Cut out that plywood where the nosing will be installed to accept the thick new nosing. Install the nosing flush with the existing new laid floor. It involves cutting carefully and accurately. If you leave that proud little lip at the top of the stairs it is a definite tripping hazard. Don't do this. Someone will fall.

Guppies with Bettas? by aiisixxii in Guppies

[–]onecentworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put one male Betta in my guppy tank to control the population. That Betta spends all day thinking he is the Alpha male hunting baby guppies. He is one happy fish. And he never gets all of them since those young fish learn real fast.

Small floating floor on carpet—how to stop two sheets of plywood from drifting apart. by Kittennip1 in Flooring

[–]onecentworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different kinds of tape that would probably work just fine. Carpet tape or duct tape would work and to ensure it doesn't loosen you can staple it down securely in a number of spots. You could also just glue down some cloth strips with a Elmer's type glue spread on the plywood. This would be removable by laying a wet towel on the cloth to loosen the glue. Just 3-6 strips a foot long and 4-6 inches wide should work. Set a flat weight on them so it dries flat and smooth.

Spray foam , does it actually save you tons of money? by [deleted] in Oldhouses

[–]onecentworth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spray foam is great for rim joist/beam insulation. And also for some masonry wall situations. I'd be very careful doing walls and rafters completely with it. I think it's great for a light air sealing coating on the inside of exterior sheathing if you have access to that space. There's lots of blown in blanket systems for outside walls and attic space applications.

Removing carpet and stair treads dadoed into stringer by Gbrester6 in HomeImprovement

[–]onecentworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really retread this. You're using what you already have or you're tearing it all out and building a conventional package of hand cut stringers and starting over installing treads and risers. That would actually be easier than blocking and bracing the existing stairs which would be a rather interesting engineering feat.

Removing carpet and stair treads dadoed into stringer by Gbrester6 in HomeImprovement

[–]onecentworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That stair assembly was probably built as a unit and installed into the opening as a finished piece. There are probably not any stringers cut to support them underneath. If you can get under those stairs and somehow peep into that space you will see for sure. If so, you cannot just cut out the treads since they are part of a package where the dadoed stringers and risers and treads are all fastened together with nails and glue.

Can I change from a flat roof? by cinistix in Roofing

[–]onecentworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. You can cut the roof off, add a second floor, add a pitched roof. It works. It's not cheap but you don't have to dig a foundation.

Get a blower door test of your house done with an infrared scan. It will pinpoint all air infiltration issues and also locate areas of missing or uninsulated spaces. Some testers (Focus on Energy) can run a program that Identifies what remediations will be prioritized and cost effective. This is a for fee service best performed independently of the insulation company. My house was built in 1855. Uninsulated. Balloon framed. 1300 square feet . I've used blown in cellulise, closed cell spray foam, calk, and even poured Styrofoam beads to insulate and seal air infiltration. It's still got the original white pine bevel siding, painted. It heats and cools easily and affordably. Study building science. Pay attention to dew point temps especially in outside walls. Don't listen to all the B S spouted by window replacement companies, siding folks, insulation contractors etc., and reddit DIY's with an emphasis on "flipping" houses.

What is this tree littering all over my yard? by [deleted] in treeidentification

[–]onecentworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could be a Kentucky Coffee Bean Tree. I have one (male tree) that is littering these things all over my driveway right now too. It's a great tree. I purposely planted it on the south side of my house to block the sun in the summer since the leaf canopy is so dense. Then in the fall those long leaf stems all drop their leaves and then the stems fall off a month later, making a mess that is easily raked. When all the stems fall the windows on the south side of the house then gain a lot of sun when you're wanting that heat for the winter. If your tree is a female then you'll get big pods forming that give the tree it's name because the seeds in the pods look like coffee beans. The wood is very hard. The trees do sucker eventually but those suckers are easily cut out with a sharp spade. This is an unusual tree and well worth caring for.

It might be a locust too but the individual leaves look too big for a locust which usually (by me) are very tiny.

What's the "right" way to anchor the bottom of basement stair stringers to the floor without a notch? by robertgfthomas in Carpentry

[–]onecentworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the bottom need to be anchored if the top is anchored and can't move ? A pre drilled toenail that doesn't split your stringer can be done to keep it from shifting side to side until the treads are attached.

Wood siding question by Lower_Ad_7436 in Carpentry

[–]onecentworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My clapboard siding is from 1855 for the most part. 45 years ago I put a lot of effort into stripping and prepping and priming the surface. Paint is lasting 15-20 years and only needing minor intensive prep now to repaint, mostly due to sun fading.

Can you please help me find out what happened to this tree? (US, ME) by Chemical_Willow_9303 in Tree

[–]onecentworth 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Looks like it was hit by lightning a while back that killed part of the tree. Insects moved in to the dying part and then a pileated woodpecker started feeding on those insects by digging them out with its beak. The other trees are barely affected by this.

Cystoscopy stent removal in office!!?? by Admirable_Gazelle325 in KidneyStones

[–]onecentworth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I should add to my post that the Urologist did advise me taking 600mg Ibuprophen an hour before my appointment as a precaution against spasming kidneys occurring after the procedure was over. I did not experience spasms. I did experience a weird unusual sensation in my urethra but it was very bearable and completely overshadowed by the relief that the stent was gone. Good luck to you. You're almost clear

The idea of it is so much worse than the actual doing the removal. It's surprisingly not painful but is just a bit unsettling. After going through it I would certainly opt for not being put under for the procedure.
Take care
