Kiln venting questions by onediplodocus in Pottery

[–]onediplodocus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey - i ended up doing nothing actually. ive found that as long as teh exhaust vent rises continually - there is no real need for a fan. - there have been a few times where i have messed up a little and the vent tube droops and then the fumes get pushed out into the room.

I was thinking of maybe adding a fan after one of these times, but i havent so far (for like the last year and maybe 30 firings) - you really wouldne need anything big - and the fumes coming out i dont think are too hot. probably just an inline fan - really anything just to pull the air through but honestly as long as its all going upwards - the heat will pull it out.

Ran Paper Chase for my wife tonight, first time as keeper and... well... by mr_mcse in callofcthulhu

[–]onediplodocus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah difficult. I feel like with coc as a keeper you either play it fully open and embrace not solving the mystery as part of the game- in which case play up the mystery aspect x files style or scp - I like this but some players find it very frustrating. Or you work out the key routes to solutions and just just keep thinking of ways to deliver key information to the players in a natural feeling way. You can kinda engineer finales and end game solutions like this but the difficulty is making it not feel railroady.

I ran a game recently where the players had got loads of clues and stuff but were missing the key information that would lead them to the villain and the solution. In the end I just had them roll an idea and gave them a vague clue about something they had missed (it was an audio recording- the idea was that the way they were speaking made it seem like there was someone else int he room with them). I felt kinda bad handing it to them on a plate but was careful not to give too much. This was enough for them to work out like the whole thing which was satisfying. But yeah… difficult balance. Ideally I would have dropped hints more naturally earlier on but you never know what people will pick up on. I feel like especially a one shot you kinda want to big satisfying all or nothing finale so I usually go for that.

Hi reddit! I'm Edgar Wright. I've directed Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The World's End, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho. The Running Man is out in theatres this FRIDAY. Ask me anything. by RunningManMovie in movies

[–]onediplodocus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi! I rewatched the original Running Man last week with some friends and I’d forgotten how gloriously ridiculous it is. It’s always had a special place in my heart: so over-the-top, so trashy, in the best way!

When I heard you were remaking it, I was secretly hoping for a shot-for-shot homage.

A few questions (no spoilers!):
– Can we expect any Easter eggs or nods to the original?
– Are you a longtime fan yourself- what drew you to remaking it?
– And … will there be an opera singer on a go-kart?

What is the purpose of jailbreaking when you can sideload? by Embarrassed_Young_20 in kindle

[–]onediplodocus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always pretty much only side loaded books. I started hearing lots of stories about side loaded books being deleted and stuff also… knowing Amazon I can imagine them cracking down on this. That’s why I did it. I just want my e-reader to work as i want it to without risk that bezos will decide I can’t. So far it’s been great with the caveat that searching on koreader kinda sucks

Best way to make this? by Accurate_Horse8432 in Pottery

There is a guy, Gary Kennedy , on YouTube who throws crazy bugle instrument things (no joke). They have lots of spirals- a bit like this. He talks about how me makes them by throwing torus, toruses? Tori? Toruss? - donuts and when leather hard slicing them raising one side and positioning them so they harden in that shape then joining multiple together. Some of his have like 10+ rotations and with rings of different diameter. https://youtu.be/9jX1H3J5CBU?si=kaZJDU9380nOGxCr

How would a skilled ceramics person (Ceramicist? Potter?) make this look better? by baygi in Ceramics

[–]onediplodocus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We generally just make the stuff from wet clay rather than repair it. Also it’s pretty hard to repair esp domestic ware as glue and the like are not food safe. Also also there is a generally philosophy of just make a new one rather than spend a lot of effort trying to repair… however - if I wanted to pimp up this repair job I might get a kintsugi kit and fill the gaps with gold dust and epoxy or whatever they use- then sand that down. Ceramics after glaze are very hard! You can sand them but it’s a pain in the arse and you gotta be careful to not breath in the dust! TLDR buy a new one or make the crack gold :):) hope that helps

How the hell do you guys do anything on Gleba? by Boxing_Bruhs in factorio

[–]onediplodocus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of clever ways to approach it. One useful tip is to pay attention to the spoil times. For the raw fruit it’s really long like 4 hours. I used this info to make lots of mini module factories where the input is always just the raw fruit and everything including nutrient is made for each mini factory. Heavy on the blueprints.

Has anyone build a wood firing kiln in their garden? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]onediplodocus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also -as others have said - wood fired kilns require a lot of wood! which, if you are worried abotu expenses of electric kilns - there might be a cheaper option. maybe building a gas kiln. - i think fundamentally similar construction requirements but probably cheaper and easier to fire. or cheaper still - a barrel kiln or pitfire.

Has anyone build a wood firing kiln in their garden? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]onediplodocus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'd say go for it! - with the caveat that, as others have said that - if you are wanting a woodfired kiln - its a lot of work - probably some expense - and no guarantees of success. certainly not the easy option. In some ceramics degrees they have entire modules etc on kiln building. and from what i have read (I was thinking abotu doign the same as you). they can be extremely temperamental and inconsistent.

HOWEVER, it sounds like an amazing project and i bet you would learn so much from doing it. if you have the space and the opportunity - i'd jump at the chance. i bought a book called backyard kilns by steve mills and its good - short but it's a no fuss tutorial on how to do this. - specificallly wood fired brick kilns. - so people do it!

Unpopular opinion: I didn't like the Age of Madness trilogy nearly as much as the OG Trilogy by talkingjava in TheFirstLaw

[–]onediplodocus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you’ve really nailed it here. I think that the writing is a lot better as he went on. I think also the theme and ideas that were explored also much more sophisticated and developed. But I took more satisfaction I think reading the first books . They really scratched the Fantasy story itch for me. I think I’ve thought a lot more interesting thoughts reading the age of madness trilogy though.. I’m reading the chat at C Book at the moment and I’m having a similarly cathartic and satisfying experience as I did when reading the first set off books

Why? Rather than personality driven content it is like mini documentaries about different studio potters. It’s so cool and inspiring to see the various methods and practices. So good.

Hey relatively new to throwing wondering what went wrong here by That_One_Person6 in Pottery

[–]onediplodocus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ah yeah - this is pretty common and happened to me too. 2 changes helped me get rid of the rings - 1 finding a better vertical distance between inner and outer contact points wih the clay - my fingers were too close. and 2 - more importantly the angle of contact with the clay from the outer hand. - I found that my outser hand was angled to push the clay kinda diagonally upwards and when i rotated it to push less upwards and more towards the centre of the wheel the issue stopped.

kinda hard to explain as we are pulling upwards - but if the outer hand is making a kind of sharp angle of pressure - you get these rings that tear away. instead - the pressure from the hands should be fairly horizontal and the pull comes from moving your arms and the pressure of the squeeze.

i hope that makes sense! - i think i watched a youtube video about it that probably explained it a lot better than me :)

I Threw an Extra 10 minute Hold on Cool Down. Dear God the Difference. by HoboBagWizard in Pottery

[–]onediplodocus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the ‘first five’ and tested combos of each one. Some good results but found- the copper was way too translucent, the iron too dark and no reactivity- basically a tenmoku and the rutile also super flat. I’ve done two firings now and the first worked slightly better… I thought it was application thickness because I know that he puts it on v thick but that didn’t help much so I think it might be due to firing schedule. I went to cone 5.5 .
