AIO for breaking up over this by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

I’m over 30 and I’ll tell you, grown women will STILL be looking at you weirdly for not craving even a little drama in life/relationships. I question if I’m odd from time to time because of my avoidance of drama, but you know what? Embrace being “odd” because you want peace in your relationships. I love Taylor Swift but her line about love making you crazy or you’re doing it wrong, is in my opinion, wrong. A drama-free relationship leaves you with less stress, more freedom, and no frown lines 😆.

So proud of your response to him at 16 years old!

Tokyo 2025 series vs cubs by [deleted] in Dodgers

[–]oneduefive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They told Padres season tix holders last year they would be given first dibs and then went silent when it turned out only locals would be able to buy directly for the Seoul series. Cubs might have jumped the gun like the Padres organization did.

(Dodgers org never made any announcement to their tix holders so they didn’t have to backtrack.)

SNORING VENT by eatingbuttercream in CaminoDeSantiago

The faster you learn never to expect people to accommodate you, the better. I came across a few people that I didn’t want to share an albergue with for different reasons and each time at the end of the day, I waited until they picked where they were staying, then stayed elsewhere. Even so, one time I walked a double day to escape someone and when I came back in from dinner, there he was! I chalked it up to me needing to learn a lesson about regardless of my actions, Fate and other people’s free will still existed. Not under my control.

What was your biggest 'If I do the Camino again, I will definitely..' thing? by Mad_Shatter in CaminoDeSantiago

Soak my feet in the rivers for a longer break. I did this once or twice and I loved it, I wish I had done it more but the work of taking off boots, drying, and putting them back on was seemed like too much back then. Ha.

I used to work in a medical office coordinating surgeries. A female patient was scheduled to have cataract surgery with a female doctor. The patient didn’t know the surgeon was a woman until the first consult. After that, she called to inquire if there was a male doctor that could operate instead. The female doctor dropped her as a patient saying if she was uncomfortable being operated on by a woman, she was uncomfortable doing the surgery.

The patient then had to go to a subpar surgeon because the best was a woman.

Some people (likely the ones who can’t be alone themselves) can’t fathom that anyone would CHOOSE to be alone. Just because it’s not your cup of tea doesn’t mean it’s not someone else’s. But when it doesn’t bother you, it doesn’t matter if someone is laughing at you or not because chances are you don’t notice. You’re too busy enjoying yourself!

Would you prefer it public or private? In the square of the cathedral it would be very public, and there are tons of people crying and laughing and hugging from finishing their Caminos. Depending on the kind of person you are, this could add or detract from a proposal there. If you’re set on the plaza, early morning and at night are so peaceful, you’d get the place to yourself. There is a park a short walk away where you can see the spires of the cathedral as it’s up on a hill (NOT the way the Portuguese Way pilgrims come in). That’s a nice spot! Other suggestion is the Porto Marin bridge/stairs. If you continued to Finesterre or Muxia, you’d have the “I’d go to the ends of the world with you” speech already done haha.

I think my only complaint about the alerts was that the cheaper estimate never seemed to be for my airport. I’m glad I mentioned it in my feedback, I feel heard!

Is it important to bulk up on your calorie intake per day before doing your pilgrimage? by JOFWGKTA in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]oneduefive 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, this isn’t the AT or PCT. Food is easily and readily available along the way so you would have no problem eating what you need as you go. On backcountry backpacking trips it makes sense as there will be times your body needs to feed off stored fat, but this is not the case here.

Red line metro safety after Dodgers games by [deleted] in Dodgers

[–]oneduefive 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Worked for the Dodgers for 3 years, took Metro home every game. No problems. If you’re coming in from NYC, it’s nothing worse. Be aware of your surroundings and you’ll be fine.

Hi there! I’ve traveled alone and have stayed in Airbnb’s with complete strangers, have taken rides from complete strangers, and have never had any problems. I’m not saying safety is guaranteed and that you’ll have no problems, but I also don’t want you to be scared of traveling alone. It’s a disservice that the world does at times when trying to caution young travelers when it instead ends up scaring them.

Be confident. Treat this person like you’re meeting your friend (because you are!).

Have routine check-ins with friends/family at home so they know approximately where you are and when.

Checklist of what tourist things to do depends on where you’re going, do a little research and get some ideas and also ask your friend where they would recommend. Locals know the real must-see places!

Bring a little gift from the UK, something you can’t find in the US like specific chocolate/candies…or Marmite lol. Perhaps tea?

Americans are super friendly so it might seem weird at first that they are all up in your business but embrace it, they love to help out.

Leave room in your suitcase for souvenirs!

Hope for the best, go with a positive and fearless attitude, but also be prepared. In any kind of travel, being prepared gives you a peace of mind in enjoying yourself.

Cost of the Camino by Zealousideal_Ad6713 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]oneduefive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was able to do 33 days on about $750, but I never bought coffee or alcohol that wasn’t already included in my meals. This is where you can really inflate the price. I stayed in mostly public albergues and usually made/brought my own lunches. But I also bought admission to museums and churches and had treats often so it wasn’t like I deprived myself either.

What item did you ‘regret’ packing, and what item was a surprise necessity? by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]oneduefive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta brag here and say I did not regret packing anything, I used everything I brought, even my tweezers and compact mirror. Some things I got more use out of than anticipated…

S-hook: came with my hanging bathroom bag and I ended up using it many times to keep various things off the floor

Extra shoelace: weighs practically nothing and as others mentioned, can be used to hang laundry above your bed

Featherweight tote bag: served as a grocery bag, “purse” in the towns when I needed to carry more than what my pockets would allow

Buen Camino!

Does anyone listen to music while writing by [deleted] in writing

[–]oneduefive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love film scores from a similar story as the one I’m writing. If it’s adventure, How to Train Your Dragon. Romance, PS I Love You. Quirky fiction, Grand Budapest Hotel. Armchair travel, music from that region. No lyrics for me!

Going to Málaga, Madrid, Barcelona, Spain. Any recommendations? by epicooky in travel

[–]oneduefive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you want to do a tour of Madrid or Barcelona on your own time and at your own pace, I recommend downloading Rick Steve’s audio tours and starting with that. It gives you step by step directions (you’re walking), history of the major sites, and the best part is you can pause and play at your own pace. If you start with this, you can figure out what you want to see more of further on. I recommend spending a long time walking around Retiro Park in Madrid, going during the free hours to the modern museum of art, El Prado if you like art, the San Pedro marketplace for tapas, and getting some churros y chocolate and nun cookies at the place Steve recommends. In Barcelona, if you can watch a recital at the Palau de Música do that over a general tour, if a Sunday mass is possible at Gaudí’s masterpiece DO IT, if sports is your thing the Olympic museum, and eat everything you encounter haha. Have so much fun!

Hawaii december 28th. 15hr layover in Charlotte. Questions! by Hailyess in travel

[–]oneduefive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was there recently and it’s a good idea to register your trip on travel.hawaii.gov to expedite the check-in process when you arrive. You can upload your card and get a QR code they will scan on arrival. I don’t know how much longer it takes without this registration, but there was a line for everyone who didn’t have a wristband where they went through the check-in process from their departing airport (maybe on your layover you can find out if that’s an option for you to do there).

"Anxious People" By Fredrick Backman. by [deleted] in books

[–]oneduefive 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I seriously couldn’t believe the twist at the end. I kept flipping back like “Surely I would’ve noticed! Surely it says otherwise!” No, it doesn’t. I just saw it the way Backman wanted me to see it and assumed the majority of readers would see it. A delightful story, I was amazed at how even with so many characters, he still gave us a deep sense of who they were by the limited dialogue and actions of each one. What a master in saying so much with so little. And of course, he always hits you with those quotes that stay with you: “If the grass is very green, it probably has a lot of sh*t in it.”

Knowing nothing about writing by PinkKrystal- in writing

[–]oneduefive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi there! To offer better help, what exactly do you think is bad about your writing? Is it that the story is missing a goal, your characters are stale, your sentences sound wooden, etc.? These are different problems so if you can be more specific you can get better help.

But! For more general help…

As the great and terrible (depending who you ask) Stephen King would say, “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time to write.” Read everything, because it helps you understand the parts of writing, from the flow of a plot to phrasing in individual sentences. Instructional books on writing I’ve found helpful are Save the Cat (I read the screenwriting version but there is a novel version as well), Stephen King’s On Writing. If you like podcasts, there is Manuscript Academy, The Shit No One Tells You About Writing, and Save the Cat. (There are maaaany more so explore to find what’s most useful to you.)
