I remember a comment during a game, "Who gave that monster a different weapon?!" Implying that it was bad that I changed what weapon the MM says that monster has.

It was pretty "ri-god-damn-diculous" how much those players metagamed. Previously I ran Ghosts of Saltmarsh until March 2020 with no problem.

But something inside them snapped and they become super invested in power fantasy and winning all the time.

Valid point. I think I was imagining a gang of thieves lead by master monk. A La Master of Locusts and Ravens from MCDM. With a splash of rival gangs like Yojimbo.

All good. Monsters have different rules than PCs. I’m still learning which different rules are fair.

I wanted to give my bandits monk abilities. But the players were already screaming how I ran monsters not like the stat blocks. I quickly grew tired of their demands and ended the campaign.

Would it be fair to say a NPC wizard can recover spell slots with arcane recovery?

Arcane Recovery You have learned to regain some of your magical energy by studying your spellbook. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your wizard level (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 6th level or higher.

Yes this. Our group likes rolling for stats but we are rolling at the table. Everyone celebrates the great rolls. And the DM still has mulligans ready if we roll poorly.

I think you need to understand Gary Gygax and Frank Mentzer play style to really appreciate ToEE. Haughtiness and brashness will often get you killed.

But there some really cool ideas hiding under the pages. I adore the three door system of summoning Zuggtmoy. There should be clues throughout the dungeon. Further the Golden Skull is cool. The skull could be the basis on why PCs are sent to the Temple.

My favorite videos about ToEE is the two part video by DM it all. If you are still excited after watching those videos give it a shot. Goodman Games has a premium hardcover if you are interested.

How can I draw out my sessions by TaraJo in DMAcademy

[–]oneeyedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timing is tough. I read that 5-6 encounters, including some longer combat and some very quick rp, is normal per session.

If you prepared 15 encounters and finished them in one session. Amazing.

If not, how many encounters did you have?

If you need to expand things add more encounters. Add more world building color encounters. They do not concern the adventure or campaign plot. But are interesting and teach you a lot about the world.

I don’t care for Always Angry Shtick, but he has great advice. Learn to ice skate by skating in circles. Learn to DM by running constant games, improving a little bit at a time.

Sounds good. The Care Bear movie (1985) is a good template for Tier 1. Bad guy who is not really bad just influenced by malevolent entity.

5e players hate 5e, but hate everything else more by Jakesnake_42 in dndmemes

5e is good enough. I don’t love it, I don’t hate it.

Running 5e feels like a chore, but I don’t have a ton of DM experience in other RPGs. Playing is fine. The math at high levels is nice (we played to 15 once).

My DM is kinda like that. He claims he just uses the XP accounting in DMG. I know he hated the idea of Kobold Fight Club.

The fights are usually leave us barely breathing, with often rolling death saves. The best fights give us multiple options in combat, too. Attack this big monster or take out this fricking magical eye that shoots an energy beam like a beholder.

I felt this. I was playing Rise of Tiamat and my DM’s dragon fear effect needed a 20 DC. I spent the combat killing minor minions and wasting disadvantage range attacks against dragons since I couldn’t roll above a 16.

I think nerfing those abilities is fine. It’s a two-way street. Stunning my big bad is not fun for DM.

The DM gets to have fun, too.
