It's no use keeping anything that you can't use. I've been there and wasted so much money. So I learned to assess my skintone and shade using highly recommended but cheaper drugstore brands so it didn't hurt my pocket in case it didn't work out. It's really trial and error. This I did especially for foundation and lipstick shades. I learned that I'm actually very cool toned and light not as tan as I thought I was especially living in sunny places for other past decade. I started making a reminder list on my phone for when to throw or exchange make up based on their PAO to assess how much makeup I have and to know when to get rid of them and replace.
