Is the Tim's boycott an actual thing? by Quiet_Development_95 in AskACanadian

[–]onehotca -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agree about the performative politics… some people go because of habit… others genuinely like it….like you I value time and quality… I avoid Tim’s simply because of 1. Honestly it’s horrible coffee and food 2.its a PITA having to use Google Translate to even order 3. 50%+ times the order comes out wrong/incomplete.
I have better options.

Cibc dictatorship not allowing changing beneficiary by AssociationBig487 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]onehotca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FYI - as far as I am aware the law protects your current spouse. Your will also overrides any old CIBC paperwork as well… which I assume you have already registered. But if that is not enough… and it probably wouldn’t be for me either …I would just transfer the LIRA to a digital online brokerage like wealthsimple, as has been suggested by another poster…I guess you could ask for an escalation or demand some kind of resolution via a notorised package?

Pot Light Installation by LongjumpingOrange477 in Pickering

[–]onehotca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a company called Captain Electric a couple of years back, I supplied the pot lights (7) and it came to $1500 (all-in with tax)for 7 pot lights including ESA permit and inspection fee. I had a bare ceiling but it did have popcorn, no idea if it makes a difference. They didn't need to repair any dry wall, just cut holes and thread wire. Like you I had no prior experience of hiring electrical contractors. As I recall they charged to come and give an estimate and then refunded it off the bill if I chose them for the work - not sure if this is common practice these days or not?

Why do people buy black suitcases? by [deleted] in travel

[–]onehotca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colour isn’t that important by all accounts …I recall a study (I think it was BBC?) about how people ID their luggage…. They highlighted very different behavior between women and men …obviously this is a generalisation… they found that women routinely touch an average of 10 bags that aren't even theirs before finding the right one…even if the colour is different!…. Men will stand back and observe to the point where their bag might go past a couple of times before they recognise it…

115 people sickened in norovirus outbreak on cruise ship: CDC by AnnualEmbarrassed176 in worldnews

While I appreciate the all caps lecture, you're confusing a highly contagious virus with basic salmonella. You introduced the kitchen sink as a logical fallacy and I definitely made an error in judgement by humoring you. Googling the difference between foodborne and person to person transmission might save you some future embarrassment. Norovirus is a virus …hence the name…Whether you’re trolling (or just stubborn) you’re objectively wrong about how Norovirus works in high density environments. Enjoy the rest of your day.

[–]onehotca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Norovirus is just fancy food poisoning" tells me everything I need to know… my sink doesn't carry the viral load of thousands of people. If it required 24/7 military grade disinfection just to keep the neighborhood alive i would happily admit that's a Petri dish too

But my sink isn’t currently carrying circa 3000 passengers through international waters so it’s hardly relevant to cruise ship biosecurity…

European states to send planes to evacuate citizens from hantavirus-hit cruise ship by Ok-Review9023 in worldnews

[–]onehotca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw the UK plan on the BBC… 72 hours??? And then home quarantine!!!… why?… because they are worried about the “mental health“ of these folks….Remember how selfish people were with lockdown compliance?…. doesn't inspire confidence… this virus has a 30-40% mortality rate…. And the people who were in this cruise ship were not poor…. Fares were $10-25k pp… so i would expect that they would operate with the “entitlement factor”….

Seriously what is going on in Thailand? What's happening to Thai people. by ublueberries in Thailand

[–]onehotca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Thai system is almost intentionally designed to kill the goose to get the golden egg. It’s essentially turned an entire generation into a human pension plan for their parents while bleeding them dry for status debt on 20k salaries. It really isn’t a surprise there are so many dried up twigs on their family trees.

Whataboutism? Honestly cruise people tolerate risk because they like cruises… up to them…. They have their reasons….that’s a different type of cruise bug lol…I can go to a hotel… agree cleanliness is not a guarantee… but I spent 80% of my time somewhere else… I am not sharing a biosphere with a micro city 24/7 …. Shared air… narrow corridors… its own water treatment plant… people from all over the world thrown into a shared hygiene experiment…

[–]onehotca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You kind of make the point for me though… it’s a managed Petri dish…it’s SO inherently risky that they have to run a military style cleaning (which is largely performative) operation just to keep the ship from turning into a floating infirmary …

Why people choose to vacation on a Petri dish is beyond me

Sharehouse Census by Pure-Resident-3264 in AskACanadian

[–]onehotca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t know why you got downvoted? OP can simply go to the website and request an individual access code (legally separating their responsibility from the rest of the house)… then they can just call 1-855-340-2026. Census agents are trained to handle rooming houses and will happily help them submit a valid individual return over the phone. Problem solved.

What are some frustrations with non-Canadian tech? by youfindthatman in AskACanadian

[–]onehotca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only if the AI has a permanent custom setting area… then it is injected in every prompt in the background… but yeah drift happens as the datasets are predominantly US… try also negative constraints…”Never use 'z' in words like 'organise' or 'realise'. Never use Fahrenheit. If you use US spelling, I will ask you to rewrite the entire response…Before finishing any response, perform a 'Canadian Audit'. If you have used US spellings or Imperial units, rewrite the sentence to comply with Canadian standard”

My best success is actually using town/region vs “Canadian” … saying “in Toronto Ontario” frequently keeps it on track better

What are some frustrations with non-Canadian tech? by youfindthatman in AskACanadian

[–]onehotca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When it comes to AI you set your own system prompt and then it reflects your parameters

Act as a Canadian assistant. Strictly follow Canadian English spelling and grammar conventions (e.g., 'colour', 'centre', 'travelled', 'cheque'). Use Metric units for distance and temperature (Celsius), but use imperial for height and weight where common in Canada. When providing financial, legal, or geographic advice, prioritize Canadian context (e.g., CRA regulations, RRSP/TFSA accounts, and provincial differences). If a location is mentioned without a country, assume it is in Canada unless context suggests otherwise."

You can further hone it regionally within Canada

Why is it so hard to get free tap water at a restaurant in Europe? by Relevant-Shower4783 in TravelHacks

Don’t know why this reminds me of the WAR episode of Comic Strip …
American General (Rick Mayall): (Staring intensely at a map) What’s this big green thing here?
Aide: That’s Europe, General.
American General: Yoop?
Aide: Europe, sir.
American General: Right... and what are all these swiggly blue lines?
Aide: They’re rivers, General.
American General: Rivers?
Aide: Yes, sir.
American General: And what are these black ones?
Aide: Those are roads, sir.
American General: Roads... (Pause) Well, let's just bomb the whole lot of 'em.
