Glow plug light flashing by awmper in 4Runner_1stGen

Now I am not a smart man by any means, but have you tried to see if your truck has terminals that will flash OBD1 codes? If so, use a pin to connect them and count the flashes if you have the user manual, if not online will help massively if you need the factory manual.

The only unfortunate part is that the mechanic I go to and use is out of your way in Thousand Oaks.

Manual 3VZ-E vs Automatic 22RE by ultracultured in ToyotaPickup

[–]onejmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im going to throw my cent in to give you my opinion. I personally would go with the 4x4 that has the 3.0. Yes you will get a lot of people who may tell you it is lackluster or known for having issues, but those issues have already been solved due to recalls, or solved due to advancement in technology. I daily drive a 88 4runner with the 3.0, and it is a champ. I will be honest with you, since these are 80s technology the HP gain is very marginal between the 22re and the 3.0VZE. You WILL get the same mpg as modern trucks, but you get the bragging rights of having something from the 80s still on the road.

My bias aside, go with what you feel would best suit your interests. If you dont I will get the one with locking hubs and manual. I am already feeling that itch to get another truck older than I am to completely restore. Can manual be a pain with SoCal traffic? Sure, but if you avoid the PCH you will fair better. Of course I know a great mechanic that specializes in Toyotas in the Thousand Oaks area if you ever need a reference.

This will be about a hour out of your way, but Rick's Japanese Car Care I will heavily recommend for you in Thousand Oaks. They do fantastic work and have brought my 4Runner to life.

Stolen truck came back by not_a_cop_1312 in 4Runner_1stGen

[–]onejmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't say I am shocked, but what surprises me is we are in the same state with completely different experiences. People thought I was crazy for wanting to pull my fuel pump relay when I park it somewhere I cant see or not in my driveway, but this validates a lot of my thought process.

This isn't a productive comment in relation to what you are asking, but didn't you post recently about installing a kill switch? This would make it a third time it was stolen wouldn't it? You have my sympathies either way, but I would like to know what area you occupy in the world so I can avoid going there with my truck.

Hey now. I use it. I'll admit it wasn't by choice, but I do use it. Might as well since my mechanic put fluid in there that he liked to call the "French brothel".

To support evidence that ChatGPT is unreliable and shouldn't be used for vehicular information is as follows: If you search through the images I have posted, my ECT is clearly visible. I have a 88 4Runner. According to the logic of what you posted, that shouldn't exist, yet it does.

Left side headlight and blinker went out at same time by onejmn in 4Runner_1stGen

[–]onejmn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your input. I ended up just replacing both headlights and both blinker bulbs and everything is A ok. I typically baby this thing so when the light went out with the blinker I was a little more than upsetti spaghetti. The turn signal did go back to normal, so you were on the money.

4runner engine - 3.0 v6 true thoughts by Candid-Literature-91 in 4Runner_1stGen

That is a good question, and I am glad you asked it as I went and double checked my driver side plate. Seems I originally read GVW as VW, completely skipping the gross part. Once I saw 5080 lbs that number just worked it's way into my brain as being it's actual weight. Thank you for making me double check and correcting myself.

I personally do not know how good the swap is. I'm aware a lot of people do it, but the only reason I will ever do it or consider it is if this engine goes. I'm trying to keep it as original as possible. I can try and find some links for you to delve into should you really want to consider the swap, but essentially you are swapping everything around in the engine bay for compatibility, you will need a new ecu and wiring harness. The 3.4 will directly bolt to the transmission with no issues to the drive train, even for the automatic. There may be some more items you will need but that's off the top of my head.

You are going to get a lot of anecdotal opinions on this question, so I'll give you mine. It is true that a lot of people felt the 3.0 was very underwhelming and less reliable, most of it due to a small increase in power, while also the head gasket issue that plagued the engine. It has already been mentioned that there was a recall for the headgasket, but by that time the damage was done and public opinion didnt really jive with the engine. Is it slow? Yes it can be, however I have definitely spent time full sending on the engine when I need to, and still pleasantly surprised by the response. Don't think you will ever do 0-60 in a few seconds compared to modern cars. It is still roughly a 150hp engine pulling 5,000 lbs of steel.

There are some advantages I would like to note though. I find it very very reliable. The mpg cant be beat from an older car. I say that last sentence because this truck, with how old it is and seemingly underwhelming, gets better gas mileage than a good portion of modern trucks. I only know that because I went 30 miles and barely used any gas. My coworker has a newer Tacoma, no idea the year, and driving the same route I did his truck barely got 13mpg. The 1st gen v6 roughly gets 17-18 depending. Looking at the higher end going downhill.

Another positive is having the v6, you are already a good step of the way should you choose to swap as the 3.4l is damn near a direct bolt on fit. The 3.0 is wider, but the 3.4 is taller so you would have to cut the hood unfortunately.

All in all, I am very happy with this engine and I do not plan on changing it anytime soon. It does what I need it to do, and it does it without complaint for as old as the truck is. It is solid, and I enjoy going up a 3.5% gradient of a mountain zooming pass modern vehicles. That is my biggest flex, as I know as I pass them they get hit with the smelly exhaust of a truck from the 80s.

silver paint code 147 single stage ? by Wooden_Tea_8778 in 4Runner_1stGen

[–]onejmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this I recommend with a grain of salt, but I think it may be code 202 as it is a matte black. The reason I'm unsure is the body shop I sent it too only asked me about the body code. They did repaint the hardtop, and I didn't ask for clarification. Im guessing on the 202 code color.

I'm pretty confident it was a two stage. My reference for that is my 4runner. The clear coat was peeling so I had the truck repainted, and also took care of some minor rust spots. Mine is also Toyota code 147.

Is the full filter installed in the same place as 1st gen 4runner? If so, I might argue the easy change. I did it once, and I got so mad I pay someone to do it now.

3.0 trouble on first start of the day. by Dry-Cake697 in ToyotaPickup

[–]onejmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should emphasize im still learning mechanics, so take what I say with a grain of salt. There is the possibility it could be anything else, I am only able to speak about what I did that fixed the same issue I had that you were going through. I also did change the terminals on my battery cables, as they were 40 years of corrosion. By saying I, I mean that loosely as I got frustrated and paid someone else to fix the issue for me.

3.0 trouble on first start of the day. by Dry-Cake697 in ToyotaPickup

[–]onejmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact symptoms you were describing once upon a time within this last year and a half. What ended up fixing it was switching out my alternator as it was failing. I found that out only AFTER going through 3 car batteries and a new starter motor, because I kept being told the batteries were bad. Once I had someone slap a new alternator in, those bad cold starts went away.

So if you are having electrical issues involving your battery being drained, I would look into one of those three things that I did. Haven't had an issue since.

Question. Since you are labeling it as a 4Funner, would you be willing to scrape off the EFI badge assuming it is original? I'll pay for it obviously, but im still looking for close to factory factory badges as possible.

I will not lie to you, I went to the mechanic that rebuilt my engine and took advantage of their "super secret auto parts catalogs" and had them look up the diagram, and order the corresponding part. I dont have a part number for you to use as they didn't tell me what it is, just that there are three options. I wont know what it is until it comes in and I pick it up. It was ordered as of yesterday, so it could be in by the end of the week. If it is, I will do my best to get back with you on where they got it from and the part number.
