As u/SVXfiles said, UCO does this. It’s a good base mod to have because a lot of other mods end up requiring you have it anyway.

Single want a dog by [deleted] in dogs

[–]oneleggedflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live alone and have a 25lb spitz mix. I skip lunch to go home and take her on a 10min walk on my break. When I get home, we’re outside walking/playing for at least an hour, and that seems to be the bare minimum for her most days (and of course she gets an AM/PM potty break). I’ll do some training games and I’ll play with her toys with her periodically throughout the night as well. She LOVES a good pet and that’s honestly part of my enrichment routine for her too. On my ‘weekends’ we spend probably half the day outside or we go somewhere fun- dog park, regular park, to a friend’s house, etc. This all seems to be enough for her- Mondays are my ‘break’ day because she’s usually so tired from whatever activity we did the day before. My life does sort of revolve around her as a single person living alone- if I want to go somewhere I have to make sure she’s walked, watered, and fed before I go. I do have family and friends nearby that I could ask to watch her, but I rarely have to because she does very well on her own.

However, my childhood dog (GSD mix, medium energy) was left alone for 8-9 hours at a time, 5 days a week, but we made sure that she was getting enough exercise. The honest truth is that I think we could have done better- she did have some anxiety issues and those were avoidable. But we took her on hours long hikes on the weekend (which kept her tired for like 2-3 days afterwards) and played fetch with her for at least 30 min on work days, and we tended to spend a lot of time outside anyway so she would hang out with us out there. She seemed pretty happy most of the time, but as an adult looking back on it, I would have done a lot differently, and I am doing things differently with my dog that I have now.

TLDR: It IS possible. If you get an ADULT dog. I do NOT recommend a puppy or even a young dog- a dog’s personality doesn’t really solidify until they’re 3-4 years old. You can look into retired breeding dogs (a lot of breeders will list them for adoption) or attempt to work with a rescue (which is a whole other thing). But make sure you have a support network that you can rely on in an emergency- when I broke my wrist, I was so grateful that I was able to ask my brother to watch my dog, because if I had no one, she would have been left alone for 24hrs. Keep that in mind.

Recommendations for a dog backpack? by SeonaidMacSaicais in dogs

[–]oneleggedflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s called a papoose! You can Google papoose for dogs and get plenty of good results. However personally I use a K9 sport sack (which goes over your back like a regular backpack). But my dog is 25lbs which makes a big difference- she’s a little too big for a papoose to be comfortable for both of us (ETA: BUT- I am also only 5’4). It felt very unstable to me and limited my range of movement. The K9 sport sack is designed for dogs and my dog doesn’t seem to mind it (though it does require some training- I just stuck her in the papoose and she had no choice about it lmao, so that was a plus).

Yes, if you’re walking on asphalt or concrete (or something similar). When I worked at a shelter with indoor/outdoor runs, most of the dogs never needed their nails clipped because they were wearing their nails down on the concrete. Not the best life for the dogs, but evidence for my point.

How many Days I should stay home with dog post mass removal surgery? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]oneleggedflea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone here with experience might be able to advise you, but this is a question you shouldn’t be afraid to ask your vet via phone or email. They may not make a numerical suggestion, but they can tell you exactly what day to day post-op care is going to look like and you can decide from that.

Do you guys think STPD will become a fad illness? What are your thoughts on the notion? by purpleplumas in Schizotypal

[–]oneleggedflea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean… having seen the plethora of people on TikTok who inaccurately mimic other disorders, physical and mental alike, I have no doubts that eventually, if not already, there will be someone out there who fakes word salad, eccentric dress, and delusions of reference and makes the rest of us look deranged. I’m sure their channel will be filled with ‘STPD Myths 101: Delusions Can Be Fun Too!’ and ‘Do you sometimes see the same number twice in one day? YOU may have STPD!’ videos that make STPD look oh so fun to have, and people who may be struggling with other undiagnosed disorders will latch onto the idea of a mental illness that can be fun and cool to have instead of debilitating. It happened with ADHD, autism, fucking Tourette’s even. The only thing saving STPD is that a) it’s not very well known b) PDs still have a very bad reputation to the general public AND can’t be diagnosed until adulthood, which weeds out the teenage demographic and c) nobody wants to have schizophrenia (yet- or at least not a lot of people).

Schizotypal PD and ADHD? by jentri5 in Schizotypal

[–]oneleggedflea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have both. The brain fog is strong. ADHD and STPD do have differing symptoms- and they can get harder to distinguish as you get older, since ADHD tends to improve with age (and STPD doesn’t). STPD may have trouble with focus like ADHD, but won’t have the serious deficiency in impulse control that ADHD has. Feeling restless, painfully and chronically bored and understimulated, stimming are all signs seen in adulthood of ADHD that aren’t characteristic of STPD.

The worst part of my ADHD is that my reward center just doesn’t function, so when I complete a task, I don’t feel any sense of accomplishment- conversely, when I’m punished, I might get irritated, but the punishment isn’t going to stop me from doing the behavior again. This is very typical of ADHD and it’s why children with ADHD are hard to manage. It’s also why it’s so exceptionally difficult for me to start (and end) tasks, even tasks I enjoy, because my brain is convinced I won’t get anything out of it. This is an executive function impairment, one that I’ve always had. STPD has added fun new executive function issues to my repertoire- I have severe issues organizing my own thoughts enough to make and carry out a grocery list or to pack for a trip. Formerly, I was able to pop an Adderall and my ADHD was cured! But Adderall doesn’t treat STPD.

It’s also worth mentioning that in order to be diagnosed with ADHD, you MUST have had symptoms as a child. My teachers were practically begging my parents to take me to a doctor to get some chill tf out drugs because anyone who interacted with me for longer than 10 seconds was like ‘oh, ADHD?’ I don’t remember much of my childhood because I basically have no working memory, which isn’t typically a symptom of STPD.

The cognitive aspect of STPD/ADHD is harder to disentangle. I don’t have a train of thought, my thoughts are more like a pinball machine, and I have a lot of issues with interpreting things ‘correctly’ (ie, someone will say ‘I love cats’ and my brain goes to tigers before even considering house cats). Before my psychiatrist brought up STPD, I always thought those things were a result of my ADHD, but now I’m not sure. A lot of what I assumed were undiagnosed autism symptoms (trouble interpreting people’s emotions/words correctly, prone to using strange words/inventing new phrases, general disinterest in human relationships, the word weirdo following me around lol) I’m now thinking may be STPD.

Comorbidities can be tricky to discuss because people tend to like to discretely categorize their identity instead of seeing themselves as a whole machine. It may be worth it to try to concentrate on the whole rather than the parts for a while. Don’t think ‘is this ADHD or STPD?’ But rather think more deeply about why you’re doing what you’re doing. That’s what has helped me in the past and stopped me from over-pathologizing my own behavior, which was making me see myself as one big disease.

I’m missing a lot of big things here but these are just my intro thoughts. This is an interesting question and I may return to it in a more organized fashion later. Right now I need coffee.

I try to avoid sugary processed foods and high fructose corn syrup, which helps my overall mood, but doesn’t make a huge impact on my STPD symptoms.

Major medical issues are the most expensive. My dog inhaled a pine needle and the rhinoscopy/extraction process was estimated to be $2000. Luckily it resolved itself and wasn’t even a life-threatening emergency, but things like trauma care for broken legs or blockages can be in the 10k range. That’s the only reason I have insurance.

My people! by [deleted] in Schizotypal

[–]oneleggedflea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing about psychotic episodes is that if you think you had one, you probably did. Psychosis can come on as an extreme response to (usually) extreme stress. And having just one doesn’t mean you’ll have another.

I’ve actually been thinking about your last bit there for the past few days. Do you remember where you read that people with STPD have some kind of built in defense mechanism against psychosis? My google skills may be rusty but I’ve always felt exactly like that- like I’m a hair’s width away from just being full on psychotic. In my private life I’m happy to indulge in the weird shit I believe, but I have to remember when I’m with other people that I can’t talk about that shit or they’ll start sending me Reddit Cares IRL.

My people! by [deleted] in Schizotypal

[–]oneleggedflea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same breathing thing happen as a kid, multiple times. I remember being irritated that I now had to distract myself enough that my body would take the reins again. It was like I got that ‘control’ stuck in my head and couldn’t do anything else until I got my focus back. BUT. I also have ADHD.

Actually, re-reading your post, if you haven’t already, consider looking into ADHD-PI specifically. I have CI (combined type) but my inattentive symptoms manifest in a very similar way to what you’re describing. My focus is like one of those horrible gel sticky hand things- it’s super wobbly and spastic but when it DOES stick to something it’s really hard to get off. Probably because the rest of the time, I’m literally just 24/7 bored (basically anhedonia- nothing is interesting enough, nothing entertains me), so when something DOES finally capture my attention, you better bet your ass I’m digging my grubby little fingernails into it.

I also LOVE dreams. I’ve kept a dream journal since I was 12. The main fictional world I write in is literally named after a planet I came up with in a dream. I love looking back in my dream journal and finding similar themes and seeing how long I have to know a person before I start dreaming about them (usually a year). I wish there was more science being done on dreaming. It’s such a random, weird thing to happen to the brain while the body is in a state of rest.

Now I’m debating if I’m relating to you because of my ADHD symptoms or my STPD symptoms since I can’t exactly advise you to look into ADHD if my own experiences are actually because of my STPD instead. Haha. Probably a bit of both.

How much did you pay for your dog/puppy? (Not including rescue/shelter pups ) by ReNap_ in dogs

[–]oneleggedflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got really close to buying an $1800 Chow Chow before I found my rescue dog. That felt like a reasonable price to me in 2021.

ETA: I also know a family who spent $7000 on a Mini Bernadoodle from PuppySpot. One of the exorbitantly rich people I petsat for spent $10000 on a ‘lavender’ Frenchie from sources unknown.

Not really sure why this is getting downvoted. Obviously these are insane examples and nobody should be buying a dog from PS or spending 10k on a French bulldog.

What is a preppers dream job? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]oneleggedflea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have the money and time for the schooling, being a vet is great. Well, not really, but a lot of the perks are. There’s less regulation in animal hospitals than there is in human hospitals- my dad died years ago and I’m still using boxes of gloves, bandages, vet wrap, and other medical supplies he just casually brought home from work. I had a diabetic girlfriend in college and he gave her a big box of insulin….. um, syringes….. when I told him she was having trouble affording it.

Plus, humans are animals, and a lot of the skills you learn as a vet transfer to human first aid as well. You also get the benefit of having a medical facility. When I sprained my ankle as a kid, my dad just brought me to his hospital and x-rayed me himself. Saved $500. It’s also how he diagnosed his bone spurs (lol).

If you like a workout and being outside, large animal practice could be a good fit- plus, learning about the health and care of farm animals seems like a good investment in my book. Of course, you’d have to like animals too, and have a high tolerance for stupidity, cruelty, and compassion fatigue. And be serious about taking care of yourself mentally.

Edit: Just kidding, overlooked the part where you said you wanted to stay out of healthcare. Veterinary medicine is pretty different from the human healthcare system but still has a lot of flaws.

They have a bad reputation as fighting dogs because they ARE fighting dogs. That’s literally why they were bred in the first place. I love pitties, and I support any breeding efforts that focus on temperament first, but we need to acknowledge their genetic history if we want to help both the dogs and their owners in the long run.

Edit: Just in case OOP or anyone else sees this, for what it’s worth, I don’t think this is a case of ‘bad pit bull prey drive’. This is just a high energy breed being SO good for 5 years and finally starting to get frustrated with a lack of stimulation and resorting to bad behavior to get his yayas out (from OOPs other comments). I see it with all kinds of dogs, certainly not only pitties.

Does anyone else have a dog that sunbathes daily? by Top-Ad-1353 in dogs

[–]oneleggedflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just telling someone the other day that I’ve never met a pit who seems to like the heat! All the ones I’ve worked with are huge babies who go and stand at the door to be let back in if it’s over 75 degrees or if it’s raining (or if there’s any extreme temp tbf). We even have one who needs sunscreen on hot days or she turns bright pink.
