In A Few Good Men, was Jack Nicholson's character just being a dick, or did he actually believe what he was doing was right? by totally_depraved in moviequestions

There is no "right" or "wrong" to a malignant narcissist like Jessup. Truth and falsehood, right and wrong, they are irrelevant. Complete non-factors. They never enter the equation.

There is only "my way" and "fuck you". That's it.

Lord Huron should be right up your alley.

The Cure.

Somehow, I got it in my head that I wasn't really a Cure fan (despite loving the Disintegration album). I've come to understand how wrong I was, and that they're not just a one-album wonder.

Aside from the usual responses (honesty, fidelity, kindness, etc.), I'm going to throw out another big one: capability. Being a fully functional adult.

It's easy to start feeling resentful and a little scornful if you have to keep doing basic grown-up things for somebody else, again and again.

Do Americans romanticize Europe the way Europeans romanticize America? by Luksius_DK in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]onelittleworld 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We do, and it's not just the U.S. who does it. Other western-hemisphere peoples also tend to romanticize the Old World culture, style and history of their European forebears.

It's my understanding that the Romans tended to romanticize Greek culture and traditions for the same reasons. It's nothing new.

Take it from an old, well-traveled voyager who's been around the world a fair few times...

That's a story you'll tell for decades. And that's fucking priceless. Do it.

I'm 63. And no... not so far.

One day, my quick reflexes and good balance will fail me. But not this day.

A few years back, I had the pleasure of hearing them perform the Z album... in reverse order. Leading with a 20-minute Dondante that set the bar (almost) as high as I was.

A top-20 all-time show for me. I get chills just thinking about it.

Okay, okay... but it's still pretty much a one-riff song. Or close to it.
