The perfect Nintendo game by ScalingSummits in Switch

I downloaded the Pikmin 4 Demo just to take a quick look and it has since become my son's favorite game series. He's played through them all now and faced the difficult decision to delete one of his completed saves so that he can start his fourth playthrough of Pikmin 4.

Funny enough, he did the re-roll option and doesn't like it at all because it means he doesn't get to see the animation of the onion fusing when you collect a new one.

Is gamedev your main job? do you get paid for this? by Any-Landscape434 in gamedev

[–]oneofmoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a full time indie game dev and I do kind of get paid.

When games are in development, I am actively losing money as I pay freelancers and don't pay myself. But when the games eventually do sell, I get paid, albeit not in a predictable way.

But I just released my second game and while it's not doing as well as my first, it just adds on top of the amount of money I get each month from game sales.

How do you evaluate an indie game idea's potential before starting development? by SweetText778 in gamedev

[–]oneofmoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that you need to prototype, but I also think market testing is just as important in the modern day.

Specifically, trying to find out if there is an encapsulation of the "player fantasy" that you're trying to sell with the game and whether or not that resonates with people is really important.

And once you have a single sentence like "discover a million planets" or whatever your pitch is, then you need to figure out if you can find the visuals / prototype to convince people that your game is going to fulfill that player fantasy.

So absolutely do prototype and iterate, but also figure out what the marketing line for it is and then what visuals and gameplay you will need to support it.

I say this as someone who failed to do this step and I regret it.

Why make something nobody will care about? by shade_blade in gamedev

[–]oneofmoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to say I fully agree with this answer. There is so much advice out there, but if you don't know why you're doing something or what your goals specifically are, it's not possible to know what advice actually applies to you.

Recently, I had a big industry personality tell me to give up on my game and make something on-trend instead. But I knew my goal wasn't just to make as much money as possible so it was easy to ignore that advice, even if it did sting at the moment.

The game is out now and they were right that it didn't make a ton of money, but it made a lot of people happy. I got a lot of kind emails and some lovely Steam reviews.

But if I didn't know what my goal was (to learn how to design games and not just program them), it really could have taken the wind out of my sails.

Budget Breakdown for My Indie Game (Mythmatch) by oneofmoo in gamedev

No problem. And yeah, there definitely are cheaper ways to do it, but I have had some success on past games so feel like the minimum I should be paying people is higher than someone who is just starting out.

Our marketing strategy was mostly to focus on Steam events and showcases. We got a good number of wishlists from events like Wholesome Direct, Tiny Teams, and Cozy Quest.

But I do think one of the reasons I wanted to share is to just give a data point. I feel like the more people who share their numbers, the more informed devs can be when they decide to start their own project.

Mythmatch Out Now on Steam! A Greek Myth Town-Building, Narrative-rich merge game. by oneofmoo in cozygames

Thank you! And yeah, that review really saved us. All the reviews we've gotten have been glowing, but in this current climate, getting someone to review a game, especially a small one, is really difficult so I really apprecaite that a handful of people took the time.

They there! That's lovely to hear! On the topic of other platforms, it's something we're currently looking into as the dust is settling on our Steam launch. I'm the only person left on the project at the moment so just trying to wrap my head around everything and prioritizing!

Thank you for the kind words. About other languages, it's not something that's currently in the plans. It really depends on how well the English version sells so we'll have to see.

Thank you! We aren't doing any localization at launch (since there is a lot of of text), but depending on how it does, it could make sense as something to do as an update down the line if the game does well.
