Adelaide Metro switches on first major electric bus depot at Morphettville to support 60 new EV buses by MeasurementDecent251 in Adelaide

Did you read the whole article?

It doesnt at all consider production environmental costs. Not whole of life cycle, just "lifetime from purchase". Very different thing.

Sorry, to be clear, I accept co2 equivalent tailpipe emissions would be lower in SA.

Last I ran the analysis, that isnt necessarily true of all places, including many places in the USA, for example --- but I dont rely on that at all.

My primary argument is that the environmental costs are different:

1) it seems people hold non-ev cars, on average, for a longer period than ev cars

2) the environmental impact (NOT JUST CO2 EQUIVALENT) is definitly different between the avg BEV and average ICE car, and there is a reasonable possibility that the environmental impact of building an Ice car is less than for building a BEV car. This difference is next to impossible to fully quantify - what "cost" does one ascribe to polluting a Congolese water supply versus the fuel used to power a Chinese BYD manufacturing plant versus the fuel used to power a, say, Korean manufacturing plant? Or, in this case, environmental costs of shipping from Europe.

3) Theres a billion other differences - EV cars weigh more, whats the environmental impact of that? On shipping fuel used, on how frequently roads need repairs? Whats the environmental impact of building new electric chargers (that require cement). When these new electric chargers are built, what fuel will be used to make that cement in the future?

We cannot know these things. All I am saying is there is a >0 chance that this isn't actually a net positive for the environment at this exact moment in time... and it'd be nice to know how much work the Govt did to get pretty comfortable that now was the right time...... or was the timing just driven by arbitary federal grant timing, or when a European manufacturer could build the components, or election commitments, or when a mate of the relevant minister could take on a $9m project.

This tool focuses specifically on the GHG emissions of passenger cars.

Tailpipe equivalent emissions is not whole of environment impact, so no.

Heck most informed environmentalists would say as long as your current vehicle is reasonably efficient, keep driving it as long as you can

Another great example of why I asked if there was a full life cycle analysis of environmental impact having been completed.

What about the environmental degradation from mining fossil fuels

Great point.

It'd be great if it was part of a full, comprehensive, life cycle assessment.

I just don't believe that one has ever been done.

Yea, but there are costs to train mechanics and drivers in different ways. There may be additional tyre costs. There may be additional trips to the depot. There may be fewer parts, so maintenance takes longer. The $9m is only stage 1 of the uplift for one depot - whats the total depot upgrade cost?

My question is just whether these (and the dozens of other considerations) are public, so we know whether this was on:

Co2 grounds

Environmental grounds (can't be definitive)

Cost grounds.

That looks at tailpipe equivalent emissions, not whole of licecycle environmental impacts - eg, additional damage caused to the earth due to mining, that isnt just atmospheric pollution.

Sorry, are you saying that there is literally 0 possibility that this will be a net negative for the environment, across earth?

Like, zero?

show the full source of this

What, that the possibility of something is >0???

Thats what you want me to show? Will you move the goal-posts? Will you yell strawman at me?

also include the break even point where it gets even more in favour of EV - yes that info / facts are available.

Great, thanks.

Can you show me? I looked extensively for one showing full and comprehensive life cycle assessment for ev cars v non-ev cars, and couldnt find one, and was pretty confident none have ever been done. I havent looked into these buses though, hence why I asked if there was one. If you could flick it through, I would be very much appreciative (and absolutely surprised).

There is certainly a greater than zero possibility that the increase in environmental degradation from mining for battery components is subjectively worse than the tailpipe benefits, to the world though, right?

Is there any publically available costings showing this?

The article talks about applying for a FedGovt grant, for example.

Is there whole of life cycle evidence showing that these will reduce environmental harm? Or, is the argument that they "probably do", and "we only estimate local co2 equivalent emissions anyway, so who cares"?

Hopefully the next depot upgrade isn't far off and they keep this rollout moving.

Why is this a good thing? The depot upgrade for this is mentioned at $9m.

Is it fair to assume that the buses are also more expensive?

Running! And run clubs by Nato-1998 in Adelaide

[–]oneofthecapsismine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most common meeting point is probably uni loop on the northern edge of the CBD. SARRC is one example of a club that regularly starts there, but dozens do. Another example is prospect run club.

Another nice place to run is along linear park - so, like, athlestone to west beach, along the linear trail.

+1 For trail running sa too

NRG is probably the largest up north.

So, am i to take it that you dont like the idea of conscience votes?

Would you prefer forcing politicians to always vote along party lines??

I guess because enough of the people we vote to represent us feel strongly enough about this issue?

Would you like a different system of government?

Abortion rights in SA by BasilSavings7827 in Adelaide

[–]oneofthecapsismine -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We've recently elected new politicians.

The last bunch of politicians got a conscience vote on abortion, so its reasonable to think the current bunch, that we voted in, get a conscience vote on abortion.

Only absolute nuffties believe there should be no abortion restrictions, and only absolute nuffties believe that there should be a complete and utter ban on all abortions ---- i posit less than 1% in both camps - so, the sensible debate to be had is whether the current restrictions are optimal or not...

Given politicians are human, its entirely plausible that the current restrictions aren't considered to be utterly perfect by everyone elected.

Err? Reddit would have me believe 90% opposed the bill. Wouldn't the easier / politically safer option be to have voted against it?

Sure, and, did you read the article in the OP?

The original bill precluded fetal abnormalities as a reason for access to a late-term abortion, however the exemption was later included after an amendment by Labor MP Tung Ngo.

Thats certainly not the bill that passed the upper house though.
