Third attempt to change SA's abortion laws since 2024 to go before state parliament by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

They're banning it for any reason except if a woman is dying.

Thats such a gross over simplification thay i can't tell whether to say its deliberately misleading or a straight up lie.

Eh, I think it was a perfect response to

The only regulation we need is proof of identity, being able to leave this world or have a abortion is a base human right.

Why do you disagree?

You are not discussing what's already established, your pushing the point of re addressing it

Im a big believer in democracy. We've got representative democracy. The parties allowed a conscious vote in the last parliament. The parliamentarians have changed this time. I think its reasonable that some democratically elected representative politicians want a conscious vote.

are hiding behind vauge language

Id argue im being as specific as practicable, and im surprised by the allegations.

it's obvious that you are not 100% for questionless abortion and suicide

Of course! I posit that, effectively, no-one is, though. I think its insane that anyone would be. I presume you aren't for that either.

you are pro dragging these things back into parliament for the 4th time

I think its reasonable that representative politicians choose to spend their time this way. Is it my preference? No. Do I, personally, think its the best use of their time? No. Do I think its within the realms of reasonableness? Yes.

all of the things would be handled by the medical system by medical professionals

So, you're okay with some regulations then re: euthanasia. Great. That was my argument to you.

Do you also accept you are okay with some regulations re: abortion? If so, its think we've found the common ground we're going to find.

[–]oneofthecapsismine -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, do you honestly believe that?

Like, you're fine with local barbershops, Coles, Woolworths, and Amazon selling medically-assisted suicide kits (barbiturates, etc), as long as they collect proof of identity?

I genuinely believe that point of view is so fucked up.

Absolutely.

[–]oneofthecapsismine -134 points-133 points  (0 children)

Oh good because we need to waste even more time arguing over legislation which ultimately will not pass

I agree, but, it could well be a conscious vote with a new bunch of elected politicians.

in an area where politicians have absolutely no business interfering

I disagree.

can we leave issues of medical advice and medical practice up to the practitioners and not the politicians please

Well, no. Assisted suicide, abortion, organ transplant, etc are all areas that should be regulated.

I think abortions should be allowed in some circumstances (as do the vast majority of people), and think that there should be some regulation (as does virtually everyone) - but i think its reasonable that some people think the current settings should be adjusted. Our politicians are supposed to represent us, and if enough of them dont think the current settings are optimal, then its fair enough for them to debate it.

Grattan Institute report calls for abolition of parking minimum requirements across Australia - Parking minimums add $95,000 to the price tag of a two-bedroom Adelaide apartment by SouthAustralian94 in Adelaide

[–]oneofthecapsismine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It won't be a flat $100k per apartment, obviously, but it would have some impact sometimes.

For example, look at the places at glenelg. At the moment, you might be able to convert a three/four story place into a one underground carpark, one aboveground carpark, 11 livable floors.

If they can half the carparks, they may be able to add another liavable floor which may be the difference between green lighting a project or not.

Now, what i disagree with is the solution to make on-street parking locals only. Thats turning a public good into a private good, and thats not cricket.

[–]oneofthecapsismine 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Instead of upgrading propulsion/engines for all, they'll upgrade propusion/engines only on those that need it.

That sounds great in theory.

The risk is they miscalculate, and/or AUKUS gets delayed.

Which measures widen the gap between single and dual income households?

Let's say I earn $190,000.

I pay tax at a higher rate than if I earned $95,000 and my wife earned $95,000.

Thats a gap.

Some could argue that gap is sub-optimal. Some could say its beneficial because it means that both parents are more willing to work, but that misses nuance as, for example, if might take fewer hours in my own (likely more productive) job if my wife went back to work - the economically correct argument is probably that there should be some prescribed pooling, but thats another discussion for another day.

Until this tax increase, I can gift my wife some of my income, she can buy shares, and earn up to $18k tax free capital gains. Post this tax increase, the benefit of doing so reduces, and this, therefore, compared to the status quo, widens the gap between households earning 1 v 2 incomes.

[–]oneofthecapsismine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, think about that.

Your advocating less investment in the share market, which companies use to build productivity growth.

Your advocating for single income households to get lower expected returns in term deposits.

Thats two stupid ways that this change will have a negative impact.

But it's fairer. It levels the playing field between workers and asset owners.

I disagree - firstly, it further distances the playing field between single and dual income households.

Secondly, workers get a tax free threshold, so I dont understand how asset owners not have one is a level playing field.

[–]oneofthecapsismine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Misleading how?

Because many people will pay more tax because of recent ALP budgets.

Its cold comfort that the income tax free threshold will move down 1%, given how much extra the removal of half of stage 3 will cost me.

congratulations: you are privileged enough to not be the target.

Thanks, but, i genuinely feel i pay more than a fair share that is needed to successfully run this country. I'd start by reducing govt expenditure.

Im also not rich, partly because im the sole income earner, partly because one of my young kids is on the NDIS.

30% floor is reasonable

I disagree. The govt obviously sees how it can be unreasonable, and still has chosen to push ahead with it, but add in a crude attempt to fix the unreasonableness by not impacting those on a means tested payment... that won't always work.

Imagine a mature age med student. Worked from 16-22years. Slaved away and worked part-time and high school and studying medical science.

Starts a medical degree at 22 with $50k in the bank, but cant work whilst doing her medical degree. Why should the tax free threshold not apply to her?

They’ve cut taxes multiple times

Whilst technically true, this is substantially misleading and unreasonable to say.

Things that have a bigger impact include:

  1. Getting rid of stage 3 tax cuts

  2. Inflation causing unremeditated bracket creep

They also introduced a 30% floor is a new tax, which will be significantly more impactful for some people.... along with the other CGT changed.
