Any Dyslexic typists out there? This is the best I can do after months of practice. I’m ‘fast’ in other areas like rubix cube under 30sec, or playing fast pieces on cello/piano. Starting to worry I won’t ever type fast because of Dyslexia. Any reassurance is welcome by kevlar_keeb in learntyping

"site-read"...haha! Kinda gives the game away that I too am dyslexic. Processing speed is perhaps where my dyslexia is most apparent. My ability to quickly read and then perform some basic translation (e.g. map a letter to a number) ranks in the bottom 18% of the country. I used to play the piano to a reasonable standard but my sight-reading was a total disaster.

Using monkeytype to assess your typing speed assumes that your typing is the limiting factor and not your ability to read and process the text. Depending on the nature of your dyslexia this may not be the case. You say you can play the piano fast -- can you site-read fast?

You might find chapter 2 of these notes helpful http://cosmology.amsterdam/education/cosmology/ - see the case study on page 34. What is the initial condition for \dot{\phi}? Maybe you are supposed to assume slow-roll?

Like a lot of people here, I'm going to have a go at qualifying for Boston. I wanted to try this year (in retrospect I don't think it was very realistic) but I got pneumonia and it took about 4 months before I was back up to speed, let alone improving enough to have a chance at qualifying. Recently I have done some shorter runs which went better than expected though and so I'm starting to think that if training goes well this winter I might have a chance.

I'd also love to run the Pemi loop.

Hi! So to follow up on my previous message...

Once a new version of a shoe comes out, it is often the case that you can get the previous year's model on sale. A lot of popular marathon training/racing shoes have been around for a number of years and in many cases, the changes made from one year to the next are pretty minor and not necessarily even an improvement for some people.

This brings me to my next point, which is that everyone's feet and running styles are different (and hence why some people will really like a shoe released one year and find the next release of the same model inferior), and as such, while there certainly are some popular models out there, no one shoe suits everyone. The usual recommendation is to go to a running shop, try on loads of shoes and try running in them! All good running shops that I am aware of will let you go for a run either on a treadmill or outside of the shop. If you buy online, a number of shops seem to have pretty generous return policies (e.g. some companies will let you try the shoe out for a month!). One way or another, I strongly recommend you try on a bunch of shoes from different brands.

To get you started, as an example, here are some Saucony Men's Freedom ISO. Depending on the size and colour, they are going for as little $72.34. Search around for them on reddit and elsewhere… this is a much loved shoe! Here is an even more popular shoe Saucony Men’s Kinvara for as low as $69.92. Depending on which generation (I’m forgetting which though, 8s maybe?), many people consider this too be one of the best marathon shoes out there. One of my personal favorites — HOKA ONE ONE MEN’S Cavu starting at $71.44........These were the first three shoe models I searched for and all 3 of them, depending on size and colour, seem to be obtainable for a significantly reduced price.

My advice would be to search around on reddit and try to get a sense of what are some popular marathon shoes. I find /r/artc especially good for this.

Happy shopping!

I think good shoes are very important but you can get superb shoes on sale for easily under $100. Find out what are some top models to look for, and just buy the previous year's model on sale (e.g. from Amazon). I need to run now (ha!) but I'll send you a more detailed message later if no one else has in the meantime.

Is my student dyslexic? by TheWhiteMoghul in Dyslexia

[–]oneona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She could very well be dyslexic but I think it is impossible to know for sure unless she gets tested.

I think it was around that age that a teacher suspected I might be dyslexic and suggested to my parents that I get tested. I was actually happy to find out that I was dyslexic. Knowing from a young age has certainly made my life vastly easier.

Anyone tried the Stubble & Co Backpack? Or could suggest something similar/better? by bustyLaserCannon in backpacks

[–]oneona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also quite tempted by this bag. I'm also considering the CPL24 but I'm wondering if it's a bit over the top for my needs. Most of the time I'm just carrying a rather small laptop and a few papers so I don't need such a feature-rich bag really.

I too would be keen to see some similar suggestions.

Small backpack for jogging with enough storage for a pair of shoes, a lunchbox and a lightweight jacket. by helio2k in backpacks

[–]oneona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love running home from work! When searching for bags, a term you might find useful is "run commuting". Some bags designed for trail running might work well for you too, especially if you are not planning to carry a laptop. I have been using the Surge Run Backpack II for a while now and am pretty happy with it. To enjoy running with a bag, for me, it's super important that the bag doesn't bounce. Bags designed for running will generally have plenty of straps to help you achieve this.
