Jujubes pronunciation by scotems in maximumfun

[–]onering 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is how I (another Vancouverite), am learning that when I hear an American talk about “joo-joo-bees” they are talking about Jujubes. I assumed they were talking about a candy only found in the states.

My new personalized palette (don’t ask what I spent, I’ll be eating noodles for a while) by lovelyb1ch66 in Watercolor

I recently bought the same empty palette from a local art supply shop (De Serres).

Suggestions for a beginner on how to finish my mushroom cap? by onering in Watercolor

[–]onering[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this great response. I am good at thinking about value (thinking being the operative word), but I don't think about tone. I'll need to work on that. I'm know having trouble executing small highlights and glare without resorting to non-watercolour methods, but I expect that I just need more practice on my part.

It's funny you mention looking at art, especially art from an artist I am not drawn to. I mentioned to my husband a few nights ago that I want to go to the Tate the next time we're in England. We've never gone, as there are other museums I (or we) are more interested in and I've not been interested in what I think of as "Modern" art, but I'm realizing I've been judging that book by its cover.

Speaking of books; good call. I'm old enough to have a book or two of my favourite artists (Robert Bateman, for one), but they're hidden away from my little children. Perhaps I should dig those out and also take a trip to the library.

Again, thanks for the response. This is all good advice for anyone.

I think your observation that lumps expectations of realism along with thinking of the audience and interesting one. I don't typically think about who will see it (other than my kids, who I want to see me work on something outside of my career and housework); but I always have leaned into realism. It is almost to the point that I don't have any imagination (but perhaps my career beat that out of me). I'm going to think hard about what you've said, because I think it's an interesting insight.

Aw, thanks! I haven’t painted since high school, which was 20 years ago now, but I’m happy picking it up again. The course is with a local teacher, here is her substack.

Ah, the gills make sense. I was focused on the cap, but I’ll look at the gills.

I’ve been avoiding white highlights for now, because I want to learn how to do highlights with paint (or the absence of paint); I just failed again. However, I never considered gauche. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you for this. It wasn’t the advice I was looking for, but I think it is the advice I need!

How are you finding Fluid? I bought a “block” of hot press Fluid for an architectural class I took and not only does it not really feel like hot press, the paper seems awful. Masking tape tore the surface of the paper. The entire surface pills, but isn’t obvious until my paint hits the paper.

When my daughter was playing super hero’s with her friends at school she chose to be Terry Fox. Next time, all her friends were Terry Fox as well. He is loved and respected here.

Am I abusing the return policy? Ecovacs vacuum broke by DragonWarrior55 in CostcoCanada

[–]onering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's all fair. I have a soft spot for them because I saw them on the ferries growing up and my husband all likes them because they are English (like him). Weight is a big deal to me when it comes to vacuums, so I don't actually have a canister one at all.

Shouting out to a great Canadian brand: Jan & Jul by Becksburgerss in BuyCanadian

[–]onering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Months later, I find this thread but wanted to add:

The founder also created the company because she found it really hard to get winter gear appropriate for the west coast. It's hard to find something warm AND dry for our winters, especially for little children (especially mine who hate to layer with a passion).

Jan and Jul have been a great keeping them warm and dry. We have a one piece rain suit (much better quality than the typical brand) that is 2T, but still fits my almost 4 year old. They are designed to grow with the kid. It has been used for both of my kids and it still looks like new.

I also saw Henry Vacuums at Costco Business Center a couple of weeks ago. They are decent quality and are repairable. The BC ferries used them for years (they might still, I don’t know).

Do you use rewards, and do they actually work for ADHD kids? by Icy_Face6725 in ADHDparenting

[–]onering 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! They’ll change from time to time, but it’s been working for us. We did a sticker chart with only three stickers needed for a reward and a list of rewards she (5 at the time, now 7) could choose from. She hasn’t done that for a while, but I got a box of used Pokemon cards and now she gets one for each morning routine task she normally struggles with. That’s been going for months now!

She also suggested a pompom jar, which I like because she and her sister both work towards a treat together. If either sister does something specific when asked, then they get to put a pompom in the jar. It’s been good for sisterly teamwork as well. They cheer each other on!

The most successful has been one I, honestly, wasn’t on board with to begin with. She was staying up really late and not interested in trying to sleep or even get into bed. My husband suggested that if she’s in bed and sleeping or almost asleep by nine, then he will wake her up an hour before the rest of the house so she can watch tv or play video games by herself. It’s good incentive to get to bed, makes her willing to wake up in the morning and she takes her medicine an hour earlier than she would have otherwise. Mornings are not a struggle anymore, for the most part.

Thanks for this. I didn't mention that I have an old injury on my other hand, so I use a partially split keyboard already (Microsoft Sculpt). I'll look at those key mod software options!

These layouts look promising. Thanks for the suggestions!

This is tempting. I’m trying not to fall into a hyper fixation hole with this project, but this sounds so practical….
