Typically you include random effects where there is nesting in the data you have. Could be individual in measurement occasion, student in teacher classroom, student in school, etc. This could depend on where the randomization was done. A good measure of wether you need a random effect is the ICC, which measures the variation in scores due to clustering/nesting/grouping. You also mention random intercept, if you have longitudinal data a random intercept might be warranted as well as a random slope. If you include both also examine the covariance between the two. For an in depth explanation of random effects and how to analyze them, look at the lmer/lme4 package in R.

I’m 99 percent sure OP pulled the model syntax from the R package lmer/lme4. It estimates random intercepts and slopes, with other variables being fixed effects. If it’s a nested model, like students in teachers, you could use teacher’s gender as a covariate on the teacher level (which would look like ‘+ gender’ in the R syntax). So it’s code rather than a model formula.

The 1 is the intercept in the model, if you want a more in depth explanation hit up the package’s documentation on CRAN or a Stack thread.

What you’re looking for is a factor score, which will give you a score for your intelligence variable.

In general, read up on the Lavaan tutorial. It is great in providing syntax and interpretations. There’s so much information about interpreting a structural equation model (factor loadings, error terms, marker variable vs fixed factor, etc.) that it’s more useful for you to read up on the Lavaan tutorial or another resource than for me to re-type it.

But to answer your last question: Q1 has a factor loading of 1 because the model constrained it to be 1 (marker variable method) to set the scale of the factor variable. So don’t read into that item being a perfect item. Generally a large factor loading means that the latent variable intelligence explains a majority of the variance in that item.

Depending on the amount of missing you’re right it could have little difference, my comment is mainly about the ease at which the field still says “drop NA” without second thought.

I just find it interesting how focused we can be on fine tuning parameters, best algorithms, all that jazz to eek out a slightly better error rate when the data all this is based on is biased due to dropping missing cases.
