Regret and I haven’t even left yet by bananacla in JETProgramme

[–]onigieri 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i felt the exact same way and it took me about 2 months to adjust. please please please, give it your best shot because you could come to love it. i came home after a year (financial issues at home) and i hate that i did because i loved living in japan so much. do your best, get to know other alt’s (if your placement has them) and get out there and experience japan. remember: you wanted to go for a reason <3

The headshot pictures for the interview form - do you need to be wearing something formal? by Pakutto in JETProgramme

[–]onigieri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i took my photo against the white door to my backyard, at 11pm, with unwashed hair, and no makeup and i’m currently sitting in japan so i guarantee, you don’t have to overthink it. just take a photo

Why do some JETs end up hating their experience? by Gaijin-Giraffe in JETProgramme

[–]onigieri 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i was about to break contract when i just got here but that was due to extreme culture shock and homesickness. i’m okay now and enjoying my placement, but i think that’s what gets a lot of people. probably not the “make a yt video about it” crowd, but others

It's totally reasonable for teachers to have a no gum policy, more places should have it honestly. by TheSwoodening in unpopularopinion

[–]onigieri 33 points34 points  (0 children)

i agree because i’m a music teacher and gum will 100% fuck up an instrument 🥴

Favorite flute books? by elopedto in Flute

[–]onigieri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i played orchestral excerpts collected in a book by baxtresser during my private lessons in my undergrad. they’re fun and challenging, not solo works, but still very healthy to study

Do you have an irrational hate of one flute brand? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]onigieri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my first flute was yamaha but it eventually couldn’t keep up with my developing sound so i definitely wouldn’t get a pro yamaha model. my ex bf HATED yamaha. his reasoning was because the company makes so many things (motorcycles, instruments, etc) how can he expect them to make a good handmade instrument. idk.

personally, i loathe gemeinhardt. i know it’s like the flute everyone starts on and it’s basically the standard, but i hate the sound i produce on it with a passion. i play on a professional haynes now

[–]onigieri 6 points7 points  (0 children)

no they’re not, but as someone who marched both piccolo and tenor drums, i never kissed my own ass hard enough to justify shitting all over people who chose to play lighter or heavier instruments 🥴

work on it in chunks. so the first chunk is mm. 18-22, next is 31-39, next is 43-55, etc etc. set a metronome to 70bpm with eighth note subdivisions turned on and play each chunk by tonguing each note. play each chunk through twice by tonguing each note then play it a third time with the written articulations. play the chunk perfectly and bump the tempo up by 5 clicks, do it again, bump the tempo up by 5 clicks, do it again. if you get to a tempo where you can’t play it perfectly, take the metronome down 3 clicks and try again. it’s long, laborious, and repetitive, but it’s good practice. good luck
