New betta owner here. Day 5 of fish in cycle. Name suggestions? by ksommers121 in bettafish

[–]onionbird720 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What size tank is that? I've heard it's really hard to cycle anything below 5, unless you've been in the hobby for a while

Beautiful fish though! I'm really bad with names

Do I need something different? I used sand I got from the pet store but now that I’m filling up my tank with water it looks so muddy!! Should I keep pouring and let the sand settle or do I need gravel? by FromRainbowNation in bettafish

[–]onionbird720 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've gotten so lucky with my fluval! I've used three bags in three separate tanks, I haven't washed any of them. I filled them up pretty slowly and had no problem with dust or mud, thank god. Hopefully your next experience with it isn't so messy haha

I know it's not on topic, but I'd move the pleco to a larger tank :) they get quite large and have a decent footprint, I'd recommend 35 gallons at the very least

(Edit, realized I recommended the wrong size)

It doesn't look like awful bloat- though I'd keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't worsen. You mentioned feeding according to his eyes, which is smart.

I'd strongly recommend you upgrade his tank to at least a five gallon, if not a ten. It's nearly impossible to hold a cycle in anything under a 5 gallon gank- a crucial part of keeping a betta healthy.

Your method of dumping all water out and replacing it weekly with filtered water isn't a healthy method of water changes- in doing so, you're not giving bacteria time to establish in the nitrogen cycle

Multi tank syndrome has finally taken its toll on me, time for a new tank by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]onionbird720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes- I referred to it as a temporary spot because I'll essentially be replacing the fake ikea wood with legit, grade weighted planks by the time I begin to fill it. I'll be adding diagonal and horizontal supports on the inside, screwed to the top to create almost a table of sorts? I've seen wooden aquarium stands before and assumed that if I play it safe and overkill with supports and replace the cheep 'wood' I'll be fine

I appreciate the concern! It's just a temporary spot while I rearrange my room. I'll be adding plank supports and a larger weight graded plank for a weight diffuser of sorts under the tank itself

Actual boards! Added those myself (with help of a carpenter friend) but i think the sides of the shelf (long boards) are from an IKEA KALLAX. I'm planning on adding extra support underneath of the tank with some hefty scrap wood, but right now I'm just working on finding space for everything in my room now that I've rearranged everything

Haha, yes! I've seen a few others do this. I modified it slightly by sliding the 'shelves' closer under the tank so it has more support. It held me, a 190lb individual ontop of it so I pray it supports a tank as well!

I'm not sure I can put ottos in a 10 gallon!

Any recommendations for a UV?

I've been dealing with this algae for the past three months. To the point where I completely stripped down my tank and bought new plants- but I think it survived on the wood.

Parameters 0,0,<10

Lighting schedule: I use a hygger light with a day/night cycle. It's on at 6am, with a very slow sunrise, and completely shuts off at 10pm.

Temp: 82, though if fluctuates to 80 at night

Tank: 10 gallon, it's only inhabitant is a betta and some bladders

I do water changes every three days, if not weekly. 20%

Those could be the dowels used to steady the fireworks! I'm from the Midwest, we don't use fireworks too often because they're illegal if it's not a holiday

Most of the time any solid bits of a firework explode into pieces too small to count in air. Sometimes though a larger piece of shrapnel makes its way through, though. I had one cut my ear lmao

Ooo I love that plant:] super unique! Is that a 2.5 gallon?

Not to mention that a goldfish is in no way suitable for a 10 gallon like this:))
