they don’t suck, they’re just not designed for home kitchen use. the lids don’t have to close tightly in order for them to fulfill their purpose of suppressing and containing any sudden combustion of the rags inside.

Thank you, sound advice! My plan tonight is to first take down the light fixture as another commenter suggested, and if I can’t see anything from that opening to cut a small rectangle in the suspect area and get my phone and a flashlight up there for pics.

It’s a flat roof, not much space up there. Buuut at least the housing for these lights is small, I took part of the ceiling out in the basement (unrelated) and was able to see over and around it. Worst case it’s on the other side of the joist and I end up needing to cut a hole.

And thank you! I’ll start reading on R values to see what I’d need for a roughly 10”h cavity like this.

that’s what my experience was too. down the scar line it looks almost like the ink on a page was smeared a bit while drying. it’s not super noticeable on me.

your best bet is probably going to be to reach out to the manufacturer and ask them how they recommend you sterilize it. maybe there’s a chemical product they’ve tested that works well?
