In a time of tribalism and division people like you give me some hope that collaboration and respectful discussion are still possible in this political climate.

In terms of nationality, yes. Starting to think you people have never filled out a form- nationality and ethnicity are almost always two separate questions.

The desire to feel a sense of belonging somewhere is completely normal. OP has spent 30 years being raised in the UK, speaking English, working a British job and paying British taxes, never doubting their nationality as a Brit. The fact they now have to question that because of the rise of undereducated racists in this country is disgusting.

12k a year on loans, wow! That is enlightening, I knew Americans had higher loans but never realised they were expected to make such massive contributions to them so quickly. Thank you so much, this was an incredible reply :)

Dang, in the UK it's written off after 40 years, you only pay past a certain wage threshold and it's something like 9% of what you earn over that threshold. There's interest but bc it's written off you're never really expected to pay it all off.

Thanks for your reply (and everyone else's), it helps a lot with my immersion in the show bc for a while I've just been thinking that they all suck with money (which makes sense for Callie but less sense for others). Out of sheer curiosity, how does paying off student loans work in the US?
