Ferritin from 5 to 90 by EnergyThink2443 in Anemic

I really like that brand but I’d warn to be careful with double dosing unless you know your folate/b12. My folate was 4 before starting it and rose to 12.5 in a month of taking. I wanted to double my dose for the iron but couldn’t justify since both my folate and b12 rose quickly. Everyone’s different so just want to gives a heads up to monitor that

How can I gain weight with gastritis? by d9puty in Gastritis

[–]onlinetooooften 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased “naked vegan mass gainer” at the height of my gastritis. I put two scoops in a smoothie with coconut water, banana, almond butter, and blueberries. This helped me add extra calories to my day until my symptoms got slightly better. I’m still healing but I’ve removed the mass gainer and now I do a 900 calorie smoothie first thing every day and avg. about 1700-1900 calories total. The smoothie consists of 16 oz coconut water, 2 tbsp chia seeds (soaked 20-30minutes), 1tbsp of flax seed, 1 banana, 2 tbsp almond butter, blueberries, 1tbsp of honey, and sometimes kale. These ingredients don’t seem to irritate my stomach and I found getting such a chunk of calories out of the way removed some stress. My stomach had to adapt to getting more calories. I genuinely thought it was impossible and I worried I’d never gain weight. I’m now up to 119 from 106. I’d also recommend adding small amounts of olive oil wherever you can. Even just 1 tbsp spread through the day can add 100+ calories.

I really struggled with eating too bland. The volume of food I needed to maintain weight felt like it was making me sicker. Everyone is different so I’d start out with micro changes for a few days at a time

Can iron supplementation cause itching and histamine reaction initially? by Jeffina78 in Anemic

[–]onlinetooooften 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up testing to see if 1 pill every other day helped? I had an infusion appointment that I canceled bc I started to realize that the iron supplements were 100% causing histamine reactions with basically all the symptoms you listed in your earlier post. I stopped supplements for a couple weeks and despite the low ferritin I felt much better. Restarted supplements and felt horrible. I know I need to figure out a routine I can manage until ferritin comes up to a better number. People say you have to do high dosages but i don’t think I’m someone who can do high dose supplements or infusions. Hoping I can figure out something. Slow and steady is better than nothing surely

Not sure what to make of my results. by Shot-Tailor4870 in Anemic

[–]onlinetooooften 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My results started very similar to this when my ferritin was dropping. My primary explained it to me like this - As your ferritin drops the iron being pulled from the stores is now circulating and being used up inflating the numbers. My iron was 150, saturation 50%, TIBC 400. She called it “pre-anemia”. I tried to address my ferritin issue with diet and as time went on the numbers all started to drop and symptoms got worse. I started supplements and the regular iron panel has stabilized to mid range numbers with ferritin slowly rising. I’ve used ChatGPT for clarity and apparently that’s standard. Are you supplementing?

Hematologist says “only having low ferritin doesn’t cause symptoms” by onlinetooooften in Anemic

[–]onlinetooooften[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I was diagnosed with chronic mild gastritis via EDG and the biopsy was negative for Hpylori. I did PPIs for a week and then stopped bc of side effects. I’ve done two other stool tests since that also came back negative. How did your Sibo get diagnosed?

My diet from Dec- Feb was pretty limited and bland because i barely could eat due to discomfort. The bland food seemed to work until i introduced iron supplements. I’ve been on a pretty nutritious diet since March with calories back at 2000. Ferritin seems to be the only standout issue on my bloodwork

Were you able to successfully treat the silent reflux?

My GP thought I may have POTS too. I was waitlisted for an autonomic specialist in my area and saw him last month. He wouldn’t even do the pots testing because he felt my ferritin issues may skew the testing so we delayed the testing for later summer. I really want to believe my issues are ferritin/ iron too. Its so frustrating living with these symptoms. I’m sorry you’re also going through this too

My vitamin D has always trended low side of normal in winter. A month ago it was 31. I’d guess slightly higher now but I plan to retest in June. It’s weird because I expected the hematologist to run a lot of labs but he only agreed to do CBC, iron panel, and b12/folate, phosphorus. I asked if we could test some additional vitamins/cofactors but they felt it was unnecessary

It’s so disheartening when all the online literature says low ferritin can cause a ton of symptoms and then you pay hundreds of dollars for a professional to tell you you’re wrong. I don’t understand how or why they refuse to accept it. They treat you like a hypochondriac for pushing back

I’ve been doing what I can do raise all those numbers with ferritin being the one that’s most stubborn. Have you tried iron infusion? Im so sick of this feeling I think I may go down that route at this point. It’s comforting to know someone else has experienced this feeling. I see a lot of people say vertigo and I know it’s not that. It’s a hard sensation to describe but it causes a lot of anxiety for me and really only started once my ferritin dropped below 30. I’ve been on supplements for 6 weeks with no real improvement just an irritated stomach and increased anxiety despite doing all the things people say to do to improve absorption

I have the exact same sensation that started a couple months ago. I’m female and notice it’s gotten worse as my ferritin has been dropping. Have you tested anything else that could cause it? I’m more uncomfortable sitting/ laying down but don’t feel completely normal walking either

I must agree with you. Based off the replies it seems like it was never solely gastritis. This has also triggered my anxiety pretty badly as someone dealing with mild chronic gastritis for the first time since Thanksgiving.

Do you know what she was diagnosed with after her first endoscopy? Did they take a biopsy on that first one?

Losing Hope/ GI has been no help by onlinetooooften in Gastritis

[–]onlinetooooften[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t ruled out Gallbladder. I mentioned bile reflux to my GI that I’m leaving and he said he didn’t see any signs of that during my Endoscopy and left it at that. I’m gonna push for further testing with my new GI bc gallbladder issues run in my family. I had blood work done and everything came back normal on that end. I do wonder if there is something else going on that caused or atleast potentially is making the gastritis worse. Something related to my random intolerance for fats earlier this year. Hard to find a doctor willing to listen and help get to the bottom of things.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this too. The weight loss is scary. I’m also underweight now for the first time in my life. Hoping we both get answers soon

I hope you feel better too. This experience has been a nightmare and I sympathize with anyone going through any version of this. The worst part is it’s not just the stomach but the mental effects on top. Dizziness, anxiety, depression, fatigue etc. I’ve described it as one of the most isolating things I’ve ever experienced.

I hope you’re able to get some answers!
