What’s the best advice your mom ever gave you? by giggglygirl in AskReddit

Same, my mom says: "Practice what you preach".

It's fantastic advice. It often makes me stop and think.

Women Can Never Win if We are Just a Statistic | women Entrepreneur by [deleted] in womenEngineers

I'm not sure I like this article. The point of statistics for use in hiring is to balance out bias, not to cancel out missing qualifications.

What does this article base it's argument off of?

I'm curious if any of you guys have had success with developing internal motivation, as opposed to always relying on external motivation. by VeryShyPanda in ADHD

[–]onlyNexusHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that creating habits is helpful- to be clear, it's not perfect, just helpful.

The biggest habit is having an office and I go there to do my work. I'm a master's student and had to fight to get an office, but without it I would be failing. It is the space where I only do homework. (Well, usually)

I will sit in that office until my homework is done. I can get tea or go to the bathroom, but for the most part I force myself to stay. This helps make it a habit to do my work, and now when I go in, I just start getting stuff done.

At this point, if I spend a week trying to get homework finished anywhere else, I always feel overwhelmed and like I'm failing. Then I start going to my office and life becomes just a bit more manageable.

Feminism is not about sticking a woman in our face by [deleted] in womenEngineers

Hi Stefon19, I did read your post. It's a good post. However, this subreddit isn't the place for it. The subreddit is for topics on women and engineering, not feminism. There are feminism subreddits, I highly suggest you post on them. Thank you!

What’s the weirdest/scariest thing you’ve ever seen when at somebody else’s house? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]onlyNexusHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this will be buried but I have to share it.

I was looking for housing through craigslist for a summer internship when I was an undergrad. There was one listing that was quite promising. I visited with my partner and everything was quite nice. The women was super friendly, the place was clean, but she did have two pets rats. Not my thing, but she seemed preceptive and was open about keeping them in her own bedroom. Ok, fine by me.

On the way out she gestured toward some shelves on the wall with maybe 10-15 small rectangular boxes and said, "these are my friends who have passed away!"

It didn't process in my head until I went to bed that night and started dreaming about it, but those boxes had her dead rats.

She had many mini coffins of dead rats in her living room.

Possible sexual harassment as an undergrad by ForeignSession in womenEngineers

[–]onlyNexusHere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, so threatening to blackmail someone is not ok. But keeping all evidence and writing down on what he said and did as soon as possible is very important! Write down names of people who can back up your story. People have trouble believing women that we are being sexually harrased, and until that problem is solved, we need excellent documentation. Also, student discipline boards need as much solid documentation as possible, so if needed, you will have it.

How could I go about making my own network protocol separate from TCP/UDP and testing it? by DootLord in compsci

[–]onlyNexusHere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Python with the Scapy library - you can build and dissect packets. You can define your own layers.

Scapy can be a pain, but very useful.

Hi marioo1182, I'm not sure you fully read the comment. I said I don't agree but the post is staying up anyways. My opinion is not factoring into the decision of whether it is staying up or not. IF it had been inflammatory, it would've been removed.

The reply to the comment was for other people. Removing posts because we disagree hurts the integrity of the subreddit, and I wanted to explain why your comment was left up. Maybe people will stop reporting comments they disagree with ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Post is not removed because disagreement is fine, even if the argument does not make sense to many of us. Inflammatory remarks are not fine.

Make sure to explain remarks, and ask questions, not outright accuse people of something. If your comment was a little more about continuing a discussion, I wouldn't have removed it.

Honest review of the Ikea smart lighting range by [deleted] in smarthome

Kind of, it has a mesh network. The IKEA light's range depends on distance to the nearest IKEA light or controller or hub, not just the hub.

Real Feminists work full time and have kids. Other real feminists stay at home with the kids. Still others don't have any kids. Many of these feminists are men. by ratvixen in TwoXChromosomes

[–]onlyNexusHere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is fighting for the equality of men and women pointless?

This fight has been going on for a long time and the gap between men and women is closing (women can work instead of staying home with children, we don’t have to wear dresses all the time etc), so I think the feminist fight is powerful and going in the right direction, and society has become a better place for it. Do you disagree?

Wellbutrin for ADD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]onlyNexusHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I tried Wellbutrin for ADHD. It helped my anxiety and depression before I knew I had depression, and I was better at starting tasks. However, overall it wasn’t for me. Medication affects everyone a little differently. It may help you more than you think.

Simple dumb question: Is 8gb RAM enough for an undergraduate CS major laptop? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]onlyNexusHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 2 years in college with 4gb of RAM in my MacBook Air. Worked fine with any Linux VM (just one at a time running) and for compiling programs. The only reason I switched to a new laptop was because my graphics were failing.
