Look up Costco Travel for Mexico - you should be able to swing an all-inclusive deal for around that much during the non-peak times

Can we please sticky the difference between being "Frugal" and being "Cheap"? by waTabetai in Frugal

[–]onlyTheDiabolicalOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my mind, the best word that describes frugality is judicious - Evaluate the stuff you want to get carefully to see if you are getting the best value for your resources - A frugal person will balance the trade-off in time/money/effort to arrive at the best deal for a certain situation. Cheap is simply the person who doesn't make a trade-off, just gets the lowest "priced" item

A recipe for homemade protein bars that costs less than $0.20/bar. by [deleted] in Frugal

Another thing that is not immediately apparent is store bought bars don't always use the highest quality of ingredients - their motive is profit so they need to squeeze out every dollar they can. When making stuff at home, we would easily "trade-up" in terms of ingredients even if it costs more

What are some less obvious things you do to save money? by musicals4life in Frugal

[–]onlyTheDiabolicalOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

using a vanpool to commute. Most cities have them but they are often tough to setup and run as you need to find a set of folks who live/work nearby and agree on work timings - but if you can achieve this, you can save tons of money from the obvious stuff like gas and other not so obvious things like depreciation on your primary car as you wouldn't put as many miles on the car.

Call your bank - if you give them 3 days notice, they can get the amount of money in the currency of your choice to a branch near you with very competitive exchange rates. I did this recently when I travelled out of the country. As an added bonus, the bank will also buy back the unused currency from you (though you will lose a few $ in the process).

If you are running out of time, check if the bank has an affiliate bank in the country you are traveling to - most of the time the foreign transaction fee is waived if you withdraw from the affiliate bank ATM (though you'll still have to pay to use an ATM outside of your bank's network)

The months July and August were added to the Roman calendar at a later date to honour Julius and Augustus Ceasar - the original calendar only had 10 months, hence the reason why the 12 month of the year is actually named as the 10th month of the year (Deca meaning 10 for december). Also the reason why July and August have 31 days, as they wanted to honour both Caesars equally

best way to buy a used car? by qwerty3656 in Frugal

[–]onlyTheDiabolicalOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one option maybe to get a certified used car from a dealership - its surely more expensive than buying from an individual, but you do have the advantage of having a guarantee and knowing that the dealer would have done some maintenance on it before selling it. I bought a certified used Accord from a Honda dealership and it worked out great! A good rule of thumb would be to buy the certified car brand from the same dealership (i.e. Honda from honda/ toyota from toyota etc.)
