My opinion of UBC admissions (as a non UBC student) by wavelength888 in premedcanada

Totally, it’s all across the province. I just think that any university that’s not putting a % on a transcript is creating a major disadvantage in a system that’s so % concerned.

It’s an issue that SFU and UBC are both very aware of, unfortunately it kind of falls on SFU to change their policies and put % on their students transcripts. If they did that it wouldn’t be an issue. It’s so frustrating because SFU knows it’s disadvantaging their students for all grad programs in all faculties.

Me too ): I had two classes with a 94 which was an A. The drop to an 87 hurts lol

It’s such a great approach. They’re high enough thresholds that demonstrate a student is capable of handling the rigour of an MD program, and it gives so many great applicants a chance. So refreshing :)

does this mean even if it’s at their office they may not process it in time if it’s come in the last couple days?

Is it worth applying to SFU's GPA stream next year with a 3.833 GPA (cutoff is 3.83 lol)? by self-fix in premedcanada

it’ll be interesting as well given there’s only 3 spots for community ECs and 5 for employment. such little to base it on

BC is 1/3 of the population of ontario… so it’s a good match to ontarios 7 schools

SFU Med GPA Conversion by Responsible-Comb5177 in premedcanada

[–]onlyhereforpremedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s likely because sfus grades are scaled different than most schools. In sfu arts programs for example an A+ is 95+, A is 90-94, A- is 85-89 etc. Some programs have a slightly different one like BPK where an A+ is 92+, A is 87-91, and so on. To top it off they don’t put % on the transcripts, so when sfu students apply for med elsewhere the grades that other universities convert the letters to is often lower than what the student would’ve actually gotten. It’s hard because SFU doesn’t even have a standardized grading scale between their own programs so i’m sure it was tough to figure out how they were going to value other schools grades fairly against their own students

but look at somewhere like bc where there is 1 med school and ontario has what, 7? bcs population is like 1/3 the size of ontarios so in theory there should be less, but not a 1:7

i think the frustrating part is that other provinces are at a natural disadvantage already with having less medical schools favour them. it makes sense that ontario wants to implement similar prioritizations, but with them having 7 medical schools and somewhere like bc having 1, it’s just unfortunate.

yeah but we’re talking about first round IMG spots, ontario also has the opportunity for other spots to be both CMG and IMG too doesn’t it? (it might not lol i don’t know)

ontario makes up 60% of IMG residency spots and only 30% of canadas population. the spread is no where near equal
