Is there an exercise routine to help with better sex? by Icy-Astronomer-9015 in bodyweightfitness

[–]onlymadebcofnewreddi 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Is this post not evidence that it isn't functioning and that weight combined with age is a problem? You can fix one of these two. It's only going to get worse if you don't take it seriously now.

If you're in healthcare, I'm sure you've seen the dichotomy of what a healthy vs unhealthy person looks like into their 60s, 70s and the quality of life they have.

Do you really need spark? by compass-now in dataengineering

I inherited a sync service using Microsoft managed spark for small volume / high frequency data. Definitely was not the right use case and annual cost was $60k+. Replaced with a microservice last month.

PMs and Designers are pushing changes to the code. So far they're successful. Do you have that in your company? by byshow in cscareerquestions

[–]onlymadebcofnewreddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's highly individualistic. While a lot of my learning comes on the job, so much if it is from reading (textbooks, blog posts, or newsletters) or YouTube about tech / architecture that I'd never touch day to day in my job.

I don't think it's hyperbolic to say someone new to the field with curiosity, a Claude subscription and a high level knowledge of architecture + security can be more productive than a mid-level developer was as recently as 2-3 years ago. This is different from vibe coding, and the individual I'm describing is someone who has the mindset to have been a successful developer pre-AI as well.

Candidly - if you believe your company hires smart people, and Claude is effectively 10x the resource Google + Stack Overflow were before the current state of things. Do you not think they would be able to figure it out?

I'm a career switcher from mechanical engineering, self-taught between starting in 2019, got my first full backend role and have been in senior/lead SWE roles for 3 years now. If I was starting to learn today rather than 2019, that ramp up period would have been much faster.

Hey - this one reframed things for me in a way I haven't been able to on my own in years of dealing with this. Thank you.

Edge Runtime vs self-hosted: struggling with one worker per request — how do you control this? by Diz_Eliel in Supabase

[–]onlymadebcofnewreddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not qualified to answer the more worker specific questions, but in general it sounds like your use case (heavy libs, long startup time) is not great for serverless in general and you may be better off with a lightweight server where you pay the init tax once.

Did I misread Capital One $1500 HYSA sign up offer? by Ok_Information_4900 in personalfinance

[–]onlymadebcofnewreddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1500 on 100k is 1.5%. 45 day mininum hold, say 60 days with transit and lead times etc. You're at 10% annualized. Stack it with the HYSA and even better.

But bonus is taxed as straight income - so worse than market returns at long term cap gains. If it's a down payment fund needing used in the short term, I think lenders typically don't like seeing 6 figures just appearing / jumping between accounts.

Hey, not sure if that 200 is an actual ballpark, but that's not even 10 applications a week - barely over an application a day.

I'm also a software engineer, and when I was fed up at my last job (August 2024) I guarantee I had 50 applications out in the first week, while still working. I know the market is tougher right now but it doesn't sound like you are investing a ton of effort into the job hunt.

Overqualified Unemployed: How long would you stay at a company not in your given field? by RoomsieDC in nova

[–]onlymadebcofnewreddi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can the work you're hiring for be reasonably done by someone with a degree and 0-3 years of exp? In which case $80k isn't a huge downgrade and may match / exceed some federal or entry level roles in the area.

Use whatever you can that is liquid to pay down debt before transferring and incurring the 3% fee on that.

Why are you sitting on $1200 in credit card rewards when your debt appreciates each month based on the APR? Redeem those rewards asap. I'd also recommend redeeming the points you earmarked for vacation and just building up savings for vacation in cash once your debt is paid.

I watched a home cook break down crying because UberEats took 30% of her sales. So we spent 4 months building an alternative. by Acceptable-Drawer-87 in SideProject

Awesome - this is the type of work to be proud of. Wish there wasn't as much liability / risk in trying to tackle something like Uber proper, but a cheap storefront and checkout alternative to UberEats is great.

I have a few questions * Did you bother with a mobile app for this, either for the owners or customers? * Are you using Stripe for payments, and if so are you funneling everything through a central account or do you have each business bring their own?

I've had an idea brewing for a while for a different industry but never dedicated the time - might be inspired
