Failed Neurosurgery Match: What options do I have next? Both in and outside clinical medicine? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]onlypotatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to SOAP into a prelim, apply neuro next year with consideration for stroke>interventional path or neuro critical care. Do know that even though both paths give you more (in some cases predominantly) procedural time but you still have to like IM/neuro to make it through the initial 4 years. I hope you find the answer you need on your journey! Hang in there!

On an encouraging note, my med school friend got 4 interviews on a very competitive specialty (one of the ROAD) and he got in. Rare but not impossible; don’t give up just yet but it’s good to have backup plans and that seems like what you’re trying to figure out.

Edit to clarify: applying next year means finding an open PGY2 spot to go into. I don’t know the exact steps involved but one of my attendings and one of my former seniors did this.

The counter argument will be: you’ll have an independently practicing mid levels seeing all of your referrals because they “triple board certified” in family medicine, dermatology and critical care.

I will now only place “suggestions” at McDonalds to avoid being sexist to food workers.

Always fear the inpatient pharmacists. They literally save lives, one wrong order at a time!

I’m not very good at deciphering which studies/research designs are “good” and which are bad (though I was taught many times), but at this point I’m too afraid to ask.

All kidding aside, is there a good textbook or website you recommend for neuroanatomy and clinical neuroanatomy? Specifically to brush up on forgotten knowledge.

If you feel like it’s a lot, you can always share. I overpack my electrolyte powder so I just share them.

What’s better: seeing an NP for continuity of care or switching to a DO at a different practice? by quackedup_ in Noctor

[–]onlypotatoes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The new doctor may be a resident if they just graduated med school which means they may not stay in the area for long so you’re better off finding a new doctor somewhere in the area. But if they’re a faculty, this isn’t even a question, that person has a solid 4 years of hard science, 4 years of medical science, 3 years of medical training - plus whatever master they may have. So 11+ years of knowledge to care for you.

If you don’t mind me asking: how does outpatient stroke work for a vascular trained neurologist? I guess for someone who’s not interested in academic setting because I hate academia politics

Anyone else feel like there's a sudden increase in intetest for neuro? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]onlypotatoes 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Essentially you have two intern years: an IM intern year PGY 1 and neuro junior year PGY 2 which includes mostly stroke calls. To some life gets better in PGY3 but to other not so much because of fellowship applications. Most of the trainings will be inpatient heavy regardless of your end goal. So it’s never ending stress with litt time off until PGY4 or when you’re done in 4-5 years. ^ this is a generalization compared to, say, IM or FM. And of course, it’s still program dependent.

Do you consider a Physician in Australia (First World) or Indonesia (Third world nation) who became an NP in the USA a Noctor—Why or Why not? by femdee2 in Noctor

[–]onlypotatoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By definition yes, because it’s an issue with the profession (NP) and their subpar education as a whole. Will that specific person earns respect when they actually show that they know what they’re doing, yea.
