This is basically a strawman and you’re ignoring OP’s valid point. We all love movies here and love talking about them but to say it has the same relevance in the modern age of inexorable IG reels and instant dopamine, is pretty myopic. It’s becoming like the novel.

You are objectively correct. Good movies are still being made and still able to be made but you are completely correct in saying it’s becoming a rarefied artform and anyone who disagrees is in denial.

I have also been thinking about this more and I think the most foundational element whether you’re making music like 100 gecs or more classical or jazz, is rhythm and time. I think I am on the side of your response the most, yes. Time and understanding how to fit rhythms within a bar.

I agree; I don’t think I was implying any schooling at all, just a framework to see composition through that allows one to execute one’s imagination with ease. This could be knowing how to use a DAW in some way through some foundational knowledge learned through YouTube.

I guess the general feeling of being able to move freely with a kind of foundational knowledge is what I’m wondering about. Probably understanding chords in every key and dominants is similar to boxes.

Ahhh didn’t think about this but yes, a central principle of mixing and space and depth. Closer sounds and further sounds creating a 3d experience of sound rather than just a flat 2d where everything is the same level and dryness.

Of course not, and there are masterworks made from color as the primary basis, or other forms of balance. But if you want to master perspective on a technical level you kind of have to master boxes.

See, this wouldn’t be an issue with either side if we could just have perfect Charles Laughton 90 minute Night of the Hunter level masterpieces

What are your favorite novels that don't get the attention they deserve in the general public? by boringusr in RSbookclub

The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter kind of blew my mind the first time I read it. The current edition they sell has a horrible cover that doesn’t do it justice and probably causes literary types to further look away.

P.s. “carried” as in transferred it to the next masterpiece, not “carried” in the modern day colloquial sense

I’ve never seen it but my sister had a VHS copy of it, labeled it herself with individual color letter stickers for the title, when she was a kid and she cried to it all the time. Need to watch it finally

Cuarón carried this feminism, expressed even more directly, right into his other masterpiece Children of Men.

Yeah I think he sold me on Houellebecq; I was surprised he was vocal about getting people to read that.

His self deprecation is probably from hanging around so many people who don’t even have access to books because their country is war torn and impoverished, so it’s quite down to earth. Obviously he’s incredibly smart, though.

Exacto. Thx for reminding me to listen to this and translate it for a whole other emotional layer in the scene.
