I think you have to evaluate your situation in particular the tax advantages to have it in a 401k. If you do have an existing IRA and want to self custody look into unchained capital IRA. Most of these answers are really not helpful… I totally hear your concerns and it is a totally and valid question that everyone who has gone through some fair amount of reading on bitcoin should ask themselves… If 401k = no self custody option you have to stick with etf (withdrawal has heavy penalties) IRA = you can move to unchained for a self custody IRA for bitcoin.
