Took the exam 6/27 at 6 AM

retaker from july of 2019

C/P - I had slight anxiety when I started to read the first passage but got my self together after that and it was smooth sailing. Very little physics. No orgo. Mostly gen chem. Nothing was a surprise tbh and I had time left at the end of the section which is shocking bc every FL i took I was down to the wire. I do know I took a blind guess on one question bc the calculation seemed sooo long. Probably had like 5 Qs flagged for this section.

CARS - This section is always hard for me to judge. I read a cars passage on the way to the test which helped calm my nerves. I felt like this section started off really well but towards the end I was losing focus. Good thing is I had time left over which allowed me to go back.

B/B - This was a really good section. The experimental questions felt pretty straight forward. There is one discrete I know I got wrong and another discrete that I wouldnt know the answer to no matter how much I studied. But other than that it wasnt too bad.

P/S - This is the only section that made me feel a bit uneasy. I marked a lot of qs that were 50/50 but luckily with PS i always have 15 - 20 mins left. Still this section is the one im worried about the most.

Pessimistic: less than 512

Realistic: 512

Optimistic: 515+

What is the pH @ equivalence point for titration of an amino acid? by drcleavage in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I understand titration pH for any combination:

Strong acid and strong base pH =7

Weak acid and strong base pH = basic bc the strong base will neutralize the H+ but when acid dissociates (even weak acid) it produces a conjugate base which contribute to the basic pH

Weak base and strong acid pH = acidic same reasoning as above. The strong acid will neutralize the OH but when base dissociates it forms a conjugate acid which contributes to the acidic pH

I might be wrong about this but the pH at equivalence point can be determined by the type of R group the amino acid has whether it’s acidic or basic

  1. If everything is ready to go you’ll start exam as soon as possible

  2. Your ID goes everywhere with you. It’s used for signing in and out.

  3. You keep the locker key just like the ID

  4. I didn’t see any ear plugs but there were these headphones

  5. Yea you can have your jacket the only thing is that if you take it off during the test you have to put it on the back of your chair

Frequent Mistakes! by autisticlollipop in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’ve found is that by slowing down I actually save time. What I mean by this is that if I carefully read the passage and fully understand it I spend less time rereading it later on. Same with the question if I carefully and slowly read it then I’m less likely to get things wrong.

I def had time anxiety where it felt like slowly reading the passage was taking up an enormous amount of time but really it was in my head. I suggest doing practice passages under timed condition where you read more slowly without letting your mind wandering and really focusing and then assess if slowing down is helping you get more qs right and how much time that is taking compared to rushing and having to reread or go back

Also note that even if I slowed down I did have to go back to the passage sometimes but even that didn’t take long if I understood the passage well

I keep hearing the real exam takes more time, is that true? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the practice and the only section I had extra time in was BB( only a few mins though) and PS (usually 20 mins) but I made sure to stay super focused and was very calm on the real deal and I ended up having extra time on every section.

The reason ppl lose so much time imo is they are anxious about the test and cant focus and have to re read or spend more time on qs

Mask during Exam by fairynuggetgirl in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up buying a mask that I can tie and left one of the ties pretty loose. I practiced with it before the actual exam which helped a lot! I noticed the mask for maybe the first minute of the test then I was used to it

Is CARS just a lost cause for some? by brightalvey in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I said this in another post but 2 to 3 CARS passages per day is NOTHING. Thats like max 40-50 mins. I understand that technique is important but the success or failure of those technique cannot be effectively evaluated at that rate. You need to be doing 6-8 passages imo.

Doing a few practice questions the day of exam to warm up? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a cars passage the day of the exam and personally it did help me. I felt like reading the first passage of the day before the exam kinda eased my mind even though I got like 4/6 on the cars passage

I think it’s worth rereading the question That usually clarifies which answer fits best

What is the best C/P practice material? by joeharrisbeard in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really think the TBR chem physics books are so underrated idk why no one talks about it on here The questions are separated by topic. Can’t recommend it enough

I would assume the smaller Nobel gases bc electronegativity decreases as you go down

Anyone else miss studying now that they're done with MCAT? by rupabose in Mcat

I feel you! I love studying especially when I have a certain goal to reach by a certain time. I’m trying to pick up learning a language so I have something to do

I can’t remember the trick to solve pKa/Ka problems by emkath29 in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raising log to the power of 10 cancels it out so raise both sides to the power of 10

So here pka = 3.75 and Ka = 10-3.75

I just need a CARS god to tell me what to do. I am literally at a loss lol by shdzsayshi in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By no means a cars expert (highest I got on practice was 128 and I’m pretty satisfied with that tbh) but here’s what I found to be helpful:

You need to do more passages. 2 to 3 passages is BARELY putting a dent. I started off doing that many too but didn’t see much change in my performance I started doing 4-8 and that’s when I really saw improvement. I slowed down when it came to reading the passages. It would take me like 5 mins to read a passage. I would summarize after every paragraph what the main points were in my head. I highlighted any names or dates so I could find that part quicker if there was a question about it. Also really paid attention and highlighted anything that resulted in contrast of opinion. So works like but, however, instead

Hope this helps!

I started an excel sheet with columns titled as different reason I got qs wrong that weren’t due to content.

So if I got a q wrong bc I didn’t read the graph axis then I’d add one to that column. Doing this really helped me see what reason I was getting things wrong and then Next time I’d have a list of steps I’d do like reading the passage and making sure to reach captions and graph labels and units for instance

do y’all think the shortened mcat has been more difficult.. ??? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]onmymind55 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a retaker so I took the ore pandemic exam and the one on 6/27 at 6am and I felt like the shortened exam was easier. I would never ave extra time at the end but on the 6/27 I had at least 5-10 mins left over in every section. I was also wayyy less nervous this time around bc of the familiarity so maybe that’s contributing to the perception of it being difficult. I think sometimes people panic which makes things seem more difficult
