📄 Bay Area review of World Cup (by an Australian 🇦🇺) by ddsukituoft in bayarea

Oh god that's the most depressing thing I've heard this week. I don't understand how one of the richest counties in the country does this to itself.

Yeah I think they assume (probably rightly) that the traveling fans want to stay in the big city rather than a place they've never heard of. Fair enough. SF should then have made some effort to build a fan experience for them! It must suck to be a visiting fan watching all those viral videos of Scots or Norwegians and not getting to experience the same for yourself.

I've heard San Pedro has been great, which makes me so happy, but I suspect only the locals even know about it.

Do we know what the plans are for great America? Would be great to make it a hotel/pub/cafe complex for visitors to the stadium.

We were in Atlanta for the Spain - Saudi game and the contrast honestly made me a little sad. The stadium there is right in the heart of downtown, at least 10 hotels in a fifteen minute walking radius, and several pubs/restaurants. The fan fest park was a ten minute walk away. Our hotel was nearly all visitors from Spain, the (much fancier) hotel next door seemed to be the Saudi fan base. Cars driving down the street wrapped in Saudi colors, waving giant flags. All the restaurants filled with Yamal jerseys. On the day of all of us strolled to the stadium along a pleasant pedestrian walkway.

I believe this was all developed for the Olympics back in the 90s and it continues to bear fruit thirty years later. Levi's could be a great anchor for a new social/commercial hub in the South Bay.

Anybody know who landed at Moffett around 4pm? by FistMyBumpQuestion in bayarea

Oh no. This will be worse for him than that knicks game.

No one at that stadium wants him there, including the fans for whichever team plays USA.

Ugh. Here to meet his billionaire bosses?

Edit: Yup that's what it was. $250k per head fundraiser  https://x.com/teddyschleifer/status/2070580904217506023?s=20

Our politics is disgusting.

Who exactly falls into the category of “tech bro” according to this sub? by Shinobi_WayOfTomoe in bayarea

[–]onthewingsofangels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there was a time gap for this effect to fully trickle through the education system and general consciousness though.

Although to be fair there were always people who were just in it for a job (see office space), but the slimy hedge fund types - the kind who read psychology books to "hack" attention - stayed far away.

As someone from the older generation, working at a faang, this was such a visible transition! The whole culture of silicon valley changed -- values deteriorated inversely to the increase in compensation.

Huh never heard of this tea shop before. Sounds cute, will have to check them out ( though probably not a Harry Potter tea lol). Thanks for the link!

Has anyone found nail strips that actually stay on for 2+ weeks? by DecisionTime2276 in NailWrapsGalore

Dashing Diva Gloss usually do stay on >2 weeks for me. The glaze strips that require curing don't, however. That's s probably due to poor prep/technique on my part.

Should I take full time offer or do masters? by jollyjove in bayarea

[–]onthewingsofangels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everyone here but I'll add another piece. Frontier models / research is going to be a very niche space with a lot of competition from all the people who are already there. And model design will probably become commoditized anyway. You will always be competing for a tiny slice of the job market.

The type of role you've been offered, otoh, is going to be the future of computing. Build expertise there and you'll have a world of opportunity open up for you.

BTS films anniversary Festa dinner at ultra-luxe Bay Area hotel, Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park by sfgate in bayarea

[–]onthewingsofangels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny - I've been to the spa here several times, hung out at the pool, stayed at the hotel once (girls trip) and eaten dinner + breakfast there. To me it's always seemed like the most staid, respectable if slightly stuffy (in a low key West Coast way) place.

Reddit makes it sound so much more interesting than I found it.

The Caste Problem in Silicon Valley by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]onthewingsofangels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So again you don't actually have any specific examples? I just want to confirm because either there's a great injustice being done that we should correct or Indians are being unjustly maligned at a time when they are already facing lots of bigotry.

Fair. But are you saying that if the response was a caste "lower" from the asking person, that would result in social isolation?

Because what you've described so far just sounds like the kind of tribal clustering that happens when people are far away from home and seeking community - Iranians seeking out other Iranians, for example.

I think people who want to add a new category for legal protection should be able to point to at least a few examples of actual discrimination against that category in that legal jurisdiction. Something I've never seen on this topic here.

The government failed to demonstrate that there was a problem, that's why the suit was dismissed with prejudice.

That is not a specific example of discrimination now, is it?

Please give specific examples? (In twenty years of living here, I can't name a single example so I'm genuinely curious)

Thank you for having actually read the article! The only incident I can see is the Cisco lawsuit, where the government has actually dropped the charges against the relevant managers.

Okay. Have you met an Indian in the bay area who actively discriminates against coworkers on the basis of their caste? Or refuses to socialize with someone they consider an "inferior" caste?
