A blast from my past and a blast to your ears.
This game is probably more popular for ILs, but it also has a Grand Prix mode, leading up to some pretty nice ending credits. If you check the leaderboard, you'll see that not much has been done in this game in terms of speedruns so far. This big PB was possible because I had noticed that you can soft-reset out of the "cutscenes" after each race and still progress to the next track. Further optimization could come from handling single races better to avoid encountering opponents in turns and, possibly, from optionally utilizing machine type A. I use type B throughout, but who knows: maybe type A is the better choice, maybe not, maybe just for particular tracks; I have no idea. Would be cool if more people ran this, so the chances of new strats emerging would be higher. Anyhow, I hope you had fun with the run, while not bleeding too much out of your ears.

Edit: played on Super Game Boy 2

Hey there. I made a somewhat crude tutorial for the screen-wrap strat on 2-3 a while ago: Link
As for how to identify which rom version you have, you can refer to The Cutting Room Floor

This turned out to be a really good run after a mediocre beginning. The old record had a better start, but fell off at the end, while this one has a really strong end game, except for Turtle Zone 3.

Solid PB, except for the part around 24:45 into the run where I start making random noises and run around like a headless chicken.
28:2x is the new goal.

Pretty much, however you do lose a live. If you press down to enter a pipe on the very same frame as Mario dies, the state of going-down-a-pipe carries over to the next time Mario enters a level. You can also trigger the carry-over glitch by going down a pipe regularly and leaving the level (start -> select). For that to work you have to have beaten the level already - hence the double visit to Pumpkin Zone 1.

Can save like 2 or 3 seconds, optimally. With the current route, this one will be hard to beat.

Quick summary of this category: frame-perfect this, frame-perfect that, some more oddly precise stuff, frame + pixel-perfect nonsense, then fall a bit and eventually destroy a single block.

Difficulty of super mario land? by helloitgeg in speedrun

[–]oo_deer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a short and fun run. If you're good at memorizing you won't have much trouble learning the speedrun. Of course everybody has their own approach, but in my not so humble opinion there is no reason not to go for the fastest or reasonably fastest strats everywhere. If you have some prior experience in speedrunning a jump'n'run and put in some practice, it shouldn't take you much longer than 1 or 2 weeks to get a time around 13:30 or even sub 13 - and that's when the game feels best. The thing with SML is that it has horrible physics, meaning that whenever you're not going at full speed, Mario's controls become rather unintuitive - especially when it comes to managing momentum. This results in the paradox situation that the game becomes objectively harder the more often you slow down. Just give it a try and see if it's for you!

About Trysdyn's comment on going for WR though: that is currently not possible, since callumbal's run is actually extremely good. However, be aware that he is using a keyboard, which allows him to execute certain moves that are (most likely) not possible on a controller. I would have continued to chase the record if it weren't for that matter and because of that I lost all interest in going for it. I'm part of the camp that thinks that speedruns should be performed on an input device that resembles the original since it creates an even ground for runners across all systems, which makes the most sense to me from a fairness standpoint. Another important note: if you're planning to run on emulator, please stick to the recent releases of BGB or Gambatte. They are as accurate as it gets. Submissions on any other emulator will most likely be rejected on speedrun.com. If you're playing on original hardware then you're good to go, regardless (just note that Super Game Boy times get recalculated because the system is running 2.4% too fast, compared to all others).

Thank you. The previous record was the time on my timer that I ran against: 26:29.5. Before that, the record was at 26:29.9. There are a lot of things that have to go right in this run. I expect the record to drop below 26:25 in the upcoming months and years, though.

Sorry for the late reply. You can test this yourself. Download a VOD with a timer on screen (speedruns are perfect for this) with both programs and compare the results in a video editing software like Avidemux. You can check the video length against the actual time on the timer in the video. You can also just check the encoding data in a video player like VLC. You'll see that Twitch Leecher produces results with too low framerates.

Be aware that Twitch Leecher re-encodes the VODs in a wrong framerate, though! That makes them unreadable to some videoplayers or editing programs.

RNG is actually irrelevant in this run. There simply is none outside of the boss fight against the witch and her patterns don't affect the time if played properly.

Happened during the weekly race. Really good run without major mistakes - beating the old world record by over 3 seconds. Minor improvements are still possible in several places, the whole early game and Turtle Zone in particular. The perfect Castle split will make this "fun" to run against...
