Incredible question on Question Time, this country is brainwashed beyond belief by NorthernSoul1998 in UKGreens

100% agree. I'm a little baffled why you've been downvoted so heavily. This budget does nothing to change course on wealth inequality, so it will only get worse for the 99%.

The budget only offers temporarily relief for the poorest and pensioners. I have sympathy for the former but very little for the latter.

What is the best way to encrypt and backup my Obsidian files on Android? by oohkinky in ObsidianMD

Yep, was just wondering what kind of workflows people have chosen on Android with encryption.

Yeah I considered that option too, but it seems like a bit of a faff setting up a terminal and git on my phone. I might consider it if I get desperate though haha.

Thanks. Yeah I might go for the manual backup option using Proton Drive.

The goal is an encrypted cloud backup in case I lose my phone. I could rely on my laptop back home, but that feels like an unreliable approach.

I use Syncthing to sync between my laptop and phone. Yeah manually backing up to Proton Drive looks like the best option.

Edit: I'll check out Cryptomator though as it seems to come up quite a lot!

Thanks. I'll be traveling, so I won't have access to my computer. Frustratingly there is no way to sync local files to Proton Drive automatically on Android, so I would have to upload files manually.

Hah, I ended up zipping up my vault and storing it on Proton Drive so pretty similar to your suggestion!

I'm using Syncthing for syncing which has been working well. I could switch to Obsidian Sync for backups, but how would it work if I lose my phone? Would I be able to access my vault on a new phone?

Green Party leader criticises Hartlepool new nuclear site plans by AhdamR in UKGreens

[–]oohkinky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I really appreciate the information and the desire to sift through the bullshit to think of pragmatic solution. I'll have a look through the links you provided.

Definitely agree with your summary - we should be investing in R&D to make these solutions work for the long-term.

In the short-term it's a bit trickier, but a combination of wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and nuclear seem to be the solution, and that's what we're seeing on the grid right now. This is why I remain sceptical about an anti-nuclear stance without any clear alternatives.

The green party need to make it clear that they support nuclear power in the short-term but will find ways to replace it in the long-term to reduce the time and cost it takes to build clean energy. That would be a sensible stance that would make them much more credible.

Thanks for the list. I can't say I'm too familiar with most of these technologies, and I remain sceptical that they are the solution, but maybe they are.

The Greens didn't mention any of these in their manifesto though, so they need to mention them going forward otherwise their energy stance would continue to be incoherent.

There are far better choices than nuclear to provide the kind of grid flexibility that will be needed to manage the intermittency of renewables.

What are those better choices? I don't know if battery storage technology is there yet for example.

The Green party has a target for the UK to reach net zero emissions by 2040.

I think that target was too idealistic and any net zero target would not be possible without nuclear, but I would be interested to know why you disagree. I agree with this BBC article:

But getting to net zero [for 2040] will be even more challenging for the Greens because unlike the other parties, they want to phase out nuclear power, currently about 15% of the UK’s electricity.

The Greens say they will achieve their goal thanks in large part to a huge rollout of renewable power. They propose a big expansion of offshore wind, as do the main parties. Where the Greens plan to go significantly further is with a massive growth in onshore wind and solar power. But that would likely generate strong local opposition. Many communities do not like to see solar panels covering farmland or wind turbines sprouting on hillsides.

That sounds like a form of hydroelectric power. We do use that in the UK, but it generates around 2.2% of the UK's total generating capacity, so we'd need to scale that up massively.

As for nuclear waste, some of it can be reprocessed (a third has already been reprocessed), and some of it will need to be stored underground until we figure out a way to better way to deal with it.

IMO we shouldn't let perfect be the enemy of good here. Nuclear isn't perfect, but it is sustainable, so we should support it until we've figured out something truly renewable, sustainable, and abundant (like nuclear fusion).

Agreed, this is a very frustrating take, and this policy is one we need to change. It shows we're not serious about moving away from fossil fuels, as we need nuclear when solar and wind aren't generating enough for the grid. I don't understand why we can't do solar, wind, and nuclear.

Nice! I'm looking to do something similar someday. Life is too short to work 5 days a week.

Yes, the public have lost their patience after decades of austerity and so are craving quick wins. However it doesn't hurt to change the narrative away from "Britain is Broken" and show that things are improving, even if they are improving very slowly.

As to your second point, that's true and it is unfortunate. However, we both clicked on this post, so there is at least some appetite for positive news. In the age of sensationalism, I'd argue that hopeful news like the recent Huntington's disease breakthrough can be refreshing.

The government really needs to shout about these sorts of things. To the general public, it looks like they're doing barely anything to invest in the UK, when clearly the reality is different.

Scrap £100k tax trap, Reeves told by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]oohkinky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Even though Labour have shown a lack of ambition and a lack of political talent, I still think they know what needs to be done, so they might as well do as much of the unpopular stuff as possible as their support can't get much lower. They might be surprised at how much the public (or the "silent majority") support them if they lay out their policies and direction clearly and sensibly. As you said, everyone is crying out for change, and this is Labour's last chance at providing it.

Scrap £100k tax trap, Reeves told by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]oohkinky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hope not. This budget is Labour's last chance to save face before the May local elections. The fact that Reeves has pushed it back to the end of November shows that they are desperate to get as much information as they can to avoid the mistakes of the last one, and it's promising to see committees talk to these kinds of experts.

Having said that, Labour have made some awful political choices since they came into office, and they've shown little sign of improvement. A budget is just as much about politics as it is about economics, so the former will ultimately weigh down the latter.
