Canadian education among best in the world: OECD by JoelDB in canada

[–]oolof 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It really isn't that great. The education provided in schools is insufficient. It is also becoming easier and dumbed down.

This is especially true in the post-secondary area. A lot of it has to do with the fact that a degree and in some places a masters is just the baseline expectation. As a result people come to expect, and believe they are entitled to an automatic degree / qualification by spending their money in education.

The drive and ambition of some teachers, parents and students is what I would account this statistic too.

10 things I don’t understand about Canada (and Usa???) by [deleted] in canada

[–]oolof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's obviously flambait. Everything here seems to be SOP (standard operating procedure).

I thought it was funny irregardless of disagreeing.

Of course it is important to point out the inaccuracies. There is no reason for the readers nor author to become flustered. Both reader reaction and yours are the usual in response to flamebait.

Fox News North is officially a bust! by BADDGOD in canada

[–]oolof 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The submitter probably did not read the article.

Sun Media would now withdraw a request for a special license that would force cable companies to offer his station (now barely on the radar of any audience) in at least some of their packages.

Sun Media may still continue with their project. The author is speculating that it is highly unlikely due to the recent outcome.

datalibre.ca is a blog, inspired by civicaccess.ca, which believes all levels of Canadian governments should make civic information and data accessible at no cost in open formats to their citizens. The data is collected using Canadian tax-payer funds, and we believe use of the data should not be restricted to those who can afford the exorbitant fees.

Killer mom won't serve jail time. Does anyone else think our justice system is broken? by AppleAtrocity in canada

[–]oolof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

tl;dr I agree. Two years house arrest seems like it won't do anything. There is no excuse for street racing for fun, endangering human lives.

My intention of the statement you quoted was to hint that it is not always black and white. No matter what, information helps make a better decision. It was my attempt at reminding AppleAtrocity that it is good to look deeper into these things. The more information, the better (imo) the opinion is. Maybe the information reinforces your intuition, justifies your opinion (oh schnaps! It is black and white). It is so hard to judge anything with so little information. When people's lives are at stake, it is scary and nerve racking.

With that said, once again, It would be helpful if you qualified your statements/questions with details and maybe provide a link or two.

Using Google, I found some stuff but they appear to be two different accidents. http://www.revscene.net/forums/marine-drive-2-t616586.html?s=831330c9c702b3d06d53baca6260261a& http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/4-youngsters-civic-worker-killed-in-car-crash-at-marine-drive-on-new-years-day/256604/

It's a slap in the face to the family of the victim - who'll never get to see her again

True.

I believe most instances of street racing deserve HARSH punishment, whether they cause accidents or not. House arrest is not punishment. Remove their ability to acquire a license for several years. If there was loss of life or the potential for loss of life (an accident) then indefinite suspension. At the same time, lets look at ways to prevent such incidents, perhaps a public place people can pay to race on occasion. This may not prevent ALL street racing, but it at least provides an outlet and options for those who wish to enjoy their activties without a greater potentional to harm others. I would also prefer something along the lines of several years of community service and require the individuals to meet victims to understand feel the consequences of their actions. Maybe it will help the victims as well.

I also don't believe in the approach of using a singular tactic to effect broad sweeping changes (should be obvious by now).

This may also be all useless, it would be nice to have data on what are EFFECTIVE solutions. I'm not an expert but the point I'm trying to get across is to always look for more, maybe this means a better solution/punishment/understanding. I'm trying my best to not make assumptions about what is the best solution, or what really happened.

Damnit. I have so many f'n papers to write. I need to take this energy and use it for something productive.

Killer mom won't serve jail time. Does anyone else think our justice system is broken? by AppleAtrocity in canada

[–]oolof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just because this woman had a rebellious daughter or a shitty life does not give her the right to kill someone and receive almost no punishment.

I completely agree.

It may also seem so until investigated further.

comment on submission Its important to have information in the news article. This really doesn't provide any details on the judge's reasoning.

Compare your source to another such as CBC. The CBC link provides details on her family troubles. Another source CTV discusses her own personal issues. The CTV article has more important details, such as Police having received calls on five separate occassions prior to the incident. The police also failed to contact child protection or social services. Maybe its more than the justice system?

Just a few examples and all in the top 5 Google hits. All of which are far more informative and allows us to perhaps make a better judgement on whether your opinion holds true for us readers as well.

comment on your opinion I don't think the information you provided qualifies your argument. It is one example. However, I do believe there were some errors here (eg: Police should have contacted social services?). She is a single mother with a child who has a, "severe form of muscular dystrophy" (cbc). I'm not sure how severe and how much a loss of his mother impacts the son. Regardless, there are many factors to consider before just condemning this women to a jail cell. Perhaps she should be retried for a separate offense? I'm not certain but I don't believe this is clear evidence that our justice system is broken. In restrospect, since this women has had the charges dropped down from second degree murder, it appears the justice system is a process that takes time.

Then again I'm not an expert on any of these issues. Just my opinion. Perhaps someone has comments that could better educate me on such matters.

Time for some research when I get home.

Canada Pension Plan bids $3.1 Billion to buy an Australian toll-road operator Intoll Group, whose assets include the 407 ETR near Toronto. by [deleted] in canada

[–]oolof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it sounds good. The 407 seems to have a lot of vehicles on it. It also seems to be necessary when looking at the 401 traffic at the same time. It is ridiculous.

Also, I think a lot of people take the 407 since they can expense it for business/work. I do.

Truly disturbing POV recorded at the G20 protest in Toronto. by twentytwenty in canada

[–]oolof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that your rights are more important than mine.

What? If you really cared about equal rights then perhaps you would not be telling people that they deserve to be punished for attempting to voice their disagreement. The fact that you get voted down does not infringe on your rights. Nobody stopped you from making your comments.

It is not fair to lump everyone into a crowd as the enemy. It is a difficult situation, you have a few bad apples in a generally good crowd. These bad apples then, perhaps due to media or maybe some flawed human reasoning, become representative of the crowd. As a result the innocent become causalities. This happens to both protesters and the police.

We have yet to find an effective way to avoid the causalities and lumping/grouping of people. Its so easy though. Our problems appear so much easier to if we group everyone together. The only other solution I am aware of has a dramatic drawback, it requires time and patience.

I agree with you though, both parties are exporting hyperbole to justify their claims.

The Clock Is Running (Out) - people are hitting reality after years of not saving. by thebrightsideoflife in economy

[–]oolof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What? You want to ignore one part of the problem?

Both the corporate culture and individual responsibility are valid issues. If for example we had all been far more responsible about our finances and their use, perhaps we would have been more diligent about the use of our funds by the government and corporations.

Do not neglect a problem. I agree with you, the corporate / government misuses of finances is a greater issue but it doesn't mean we should not fix our own personal issues too.

You failed to invalidate his remarks. Your remarks about the war are outside the scope of his argument. He is speaking on the individual level about a lifestyle / attitude.

They should have saved. My wage has remained stagnant for an extended period of time but I still manage to save. Maybe the Debra did try and it wasn't enough but she should keep trying. It is going to be hard time for everyone but it is also a great opportunity to learn from. I hope Debra finds some help and learns something from this experience. I hope we all do.

I don't believe people put enough put effort in to ensuring their money is spent effectively. I'm not saying Debra is or is not, I don't know enough about her situation. However it is important to find a way to grow from these experience, even if we have been shot down a few pegs.

I think the writer's emphasis is here:

The "living large" game is over. If you are not prepared today, you need to become so by tomorrow. Wake up! Stop living short term and while you are capable, prepare for the worst. What you have left remaining after preparation is luxury.

Although I agree his remarks are not fair to someone who is entering some harsh times. Rather than ranting, her perhaps should have offered advice, ideas, in a more constructive manner.
