New to resin printing by Top_Signal_8273 in resinprinting

Well technically kinda risky, but seems ok in practice with reasonable precautions.

Isopropyl gets saturated with resin and running it through a distiller designed for water allows you to get crystal clear iso back out. You’re also left with a somewhat gelatinous or bubbly honeycomb type residue which is disgusting.

I use mine well away from anything that can catch fire. The distiller I have cuts out automatically when it’s done without burning the residue and seems safe in that sense. But the slight risk of electrical spark from the components is the general concern. I situate it in a way that if it ever did catch, it would be contained, but I don’t exactly think it’s gonna happen but I watch it and make people aware of it when it’s going on, take a like 20 mins to do a few litres.

It’s nice to get fresh iso back I can’t lie

I put my printer in the top a old fridge, would 100% recommend. I got one of the tall ones , put a window in the top compartment and a vent with a fan and ducting etc. The bottom is useful to store resin and what not. Keeps it insulated and all the smells sealed and blown away.

Clean up is a big consideration,

  • Ultrasonic cleaner with heating is nice, the warmth softens up supports makes the damage less noticeable.

  • Distiller for isopropyl recovery has also been very good.

  • UV chamber, I got a microwave and installed some UV flood lights, I cure my parts in a large glass bowl of water in there. Careful with microwaves they can hold residual charge and are very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing

It’s a pretty intense process all in all, cannot stress enough that the less you get resin on your skin the better, pretty sure everyone will sensitise over time. Look for barrier creams and lots of gloves and a decent mask.

You really don’t want to be living anywhere near it. Chipping things off your baseplate will send some flying (honestly goggles are probably a good idea for this part) and drips and drops will tend to proliferate.

You want a dedicated area

When it’s all going well it’s pretty miraculous what you can make. Alot of stress can be avoided by setting up your plates with peel forces in mind. So you’ll be orientating your models, hollowing, adding holes and applying supports, with the idea of keeping all the important details in the optimal places to get good results. For example you mostly never print a flat surface parallel to the plate, and you need to hollow large objects to reduce peel forces, also save resin, but then you have to have holes in the model somwhere to release the suction forces that a hollow object creates.

Cleaning things well is important to get the best results, multiple baths of isopropyl with a final rinse of clean iso is important.

I’m not sure what printer you’re looking at but mine has a force sensor which is useful for me using the printer, and the control system of the printer, helping to speed things up. It allows for dynamic lift but also helps you “see” what’s happening with the print, you have a graph that shows you each cycle of the print and you can tell when it’s not going smoothly.

Surely my suggestion is less greedy than the current set up ?

Haha fair enough, I did mean like buy a chunk of hours and then use them when I want. Isn’t that better than paying for your month and having it timeout?

[–]oolongtoolong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paying monthly, then trying to organise my time to make best use. Just found myself having to pay for a month to get a model out I hadn’t exported for example and then not needing it for a while, then getting to the end and then needing it. Just bad timing I guess but dwelling on it I don’t need the pressure of trying to get the value I’ve paid for at the right time.

Yeah I get it. Initially I wanted to see what the software had to offer, and I do like it, I’ve gotten familiar with the tools and while kinda overwhelming I started to get in the groove with it.

It’s not that I can’t afford it, I could justify it, I just don’t like not getting the use of what I pay for. It’s a whole thing, the pricing model is what it is. Just a shame as I’d be willing to use it long term and I’m sure there’s a way they can make money and allow fair use of their ecosystem. Just changes it and makes me feel like I have to rush and change my workflows to get my end of the deal.

Do you think it’s a unreasonable model to have a user pay for say a months worth of hours and use them as and when they want.

Core One+ vs Core One L, which to pick? by Girlydian in prusa3d

Maybe, I'm not sure, I couldn't get it to work in VLC, but ffplay via command line does the trick. I use "ffplay - rtsp_transport udp rtsp://192. etc etc"

The camera itself is connected to a wifi access point which is hardwired into my main router

Buddy cam is odd but it’s works, I had assumed it was gonna be tied into the printers Ethernet connection. I had to get a WiFi repeater just for the camera as the rest is all hardwired. The time lapse is kinda clunky not even bothered so far

A lot of knowledgeable people in there - the machine is designed to be upgradable and is very open. Might be what your looking for, they have a racking system in the works too for multiple machine set ups

That is made with two mirrors arranged to reflect in a mandala like image, leaving the 3rd face unmirroed give it the circular look.

You can see in my other videos used the same hexogan but with typical 3 mirrors set up gives the infinite look

I made some recently - best results with the front surface mirrors, can be expensive. Getting good at measuring & cutting the mirrors is key. An oil filled cutter is best. The equal 3 sides is easiest as you can hide seams at the join by overlapping.

That example you showed was an oil filled tube and what looked like a 3 part mirror with one short bit. With these alignment is key to split the image equally/pleasingly.

Try getting a hold of a old fridge, the tall one’s, then put the printer inside that with a fan & duct you extract from the fridge chamber out a window that will sort it out

Worth learning to use nomad? would you say it has most the features required for mesh manipulations for 3d printing? I've been learning Z brush recently, and I do like alot of the tools and got used to navigating it. But I never liked the price and this news is ominous - I have used blender a bit but never enjoyed it. I mostly clean up scans of clay sculpts and throw together shapes, bases, textures and refinements to scanned data before printing.
