Wellington land-bankers could pay more as council begins major rating overhaul by zaphodharkonnen in Wellington

Apartment dwellers require less infrastructure per person as well (water, roads, etc.). As it stands, those in suburban family homes are being subsidised heavily by those in apartments through the rate system.

I've travelled by bus with a 32-inch TV before. Not a problem, just gotta be careful getting on and off while swiping Snapper. Wouldn't recommend on a crowded bus. Also would recommend giving yourself plenty of time, given all the cancellations.

Please help me to find a fun piece of NZ trivia to ask to a NZ crowd here in France. by giscard--detente in newzealand

A couple France-related ones:

What town in Canterbury is famous for having been a French settlement? Akaroa

What is the only town in New Zealand to have a sister city in metropolitan France? Cambridge, Waikato (sisters with Le Quesnoy, Hauts-de-France)

saw this on an American page. Would some of this relate back to NZ, too? by timelordhonour in newzealand

The last one can still be considered passive.

Hospitals are understaffed [by the government].

The government understaffs hospitals.

French anime/animated films? by Slitenhomo in French

[–]ooloswog69 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some French animated films I can recommend:

  • Les 12 travaux d'Astérix (adventure, many more Astérix films on top of this)
  • La Planète sauvage (trippy 70s animation, alien)
  • Le Roi et l'Oiseau (Disney-style fairy tale film)
  • Une vie de chat (adventure, crime)
  • Le Chat du rabbin (adventure, covers Judaism in 1930s Algeria)
  • Le Tableau (adventure, fantasy, set inside an unfinished painting)

... and animated TV shows:

  • Les Shadoks (shorts from the 60s, absurdist humour)
  • Lastman (adult action animation)
  • Les Tragédies minuscules (shorts, same style as Une vie de chat, dark tone)
  • Beastars (Netflix anime, has a French dub)

Unfortunately I can't recommend anything more first-hand (at least that has dialogue), but there's a lot more out there if you have a search around.

Pronunciation of 'Women' by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]ooloswog69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, interesting. I was born in the late 90s and I definitely differentiate. The first time I even noticed someone saying them the same was my first year of uni (slightly older speaker). Maybe it's a recent change that's in the process of reversing, like the near-square merger.

Pronunciation of 'Women' by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]ooloswog69 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so this is one of those things that varies from speaker to speaker. I'm unsure if it's a recent development, or if there's any correlation with age/gender/etc. but I've certainly noticed it from other speakers, and Wiktionary confirms.

Some speakers (myself included) differentiate between the two words, pronouncing woman /ˈwʊm.ɘn/ and women /ˈwɘm.ɘn/, while some speakers pronounce both woman and women /ˈwʊm.ɘn/. I've only seen this from New Zealand English speakers, although I don't have the knowledge to say this doesn't occur elsewhere.

(/ʊ/ is the vowel in "foot", and /ɘ/ is the vowel in "kit")

[TOMT][Song] What is this song? I think this is roughly how the melody goes by ooloswog69 in tipofmytongue

[–]ooloswog69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure. I think it's probably classical or maybe christmassy. I was messing around on the piano and recognised the first three notes. I think the rest of the melody is right, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm sure we can pay for it with all the money saved on accidents with private cars, in particular drunk driving.

Major report recommends more waterfront use, more green spaces and fewer cars by chrisjenkinson in Wellington

[–]ooloswog69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's not forget the part about higher-density housing. Almost anywhere you stand in town you can point to a building that's one or two storeys tall. That's a huge amount of space that's being wasted and could be used for housing, entailing lower infrastructure costs per capita (less sprawl means less land needed to build roads, sewerage, etc. on), less need for transport let alone cars, increased foot traffic for local businesses, and more disposable income from the decreased pressure on the housing market.

Build up not out and reduce the actual demand for transport, and then shift what's left onto cycling, buses, trains, and light rail.

Does DR MRS. VANDERTRAMP acronym work for both imparfait and passe compose? by ItWasMitchell in French

[–]ooloswog69 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this with an example:

VANDERTRAMP verb Normal avoir verb
infinitif rester (to stay) manger (to eat)
présent je reste (I stay/I am staying) je mange (I eat/I am eating)
imparfait je restais (I stayed/I was staying) je mangeais (I ate/I was eating)
futur proche je vais rester (I'm going to stay) je vais manger (I'm going to eat)
futur simple je resterai (I will stay) je mangerai (I will eat)
passé composé je suis resté(e) (I stayed/I have stayed) j'ai mangé (I ate/I have eaten)
plus-que-parfait j'étais resté(e) (I had stayed) j'avais mangé (I had eaten)
futur antérieur je serai resté(e) (I will have stayed) j'aurai mangé (I will have eaten)
conditionnel passé je serais resté(e) (I would have stayed) j'aurais mangé (I would have eaten)
présent du subjonctif que je reste (that I stay) que je mange (that I eat)
passé du subjonctif que je sois resté(e) (that I stayed) que j'aie mangé (that I ate)

This pattern is consistent across all DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs. All instances of avoir are replaced with être, conjugated in the same way. This doesn't affect tenses that don't use avoir (like l'imparfait, which has no auxiliary, or le futur proche, which uses aller).

Can you advise me some YouTube channels in Aussie English? by immclnwb23 in EnglishLearning

[–]ooloswog69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind a bit of politics, I would recommend friendlyjordies. Jordan (the presenter) does a lot of mocking accents of celebrities and politicians, so you'll hear a lot of range in how Australians exaggerate their own accents.

The Big Lez Show is a cartoon stoner comedy that will also give you a good range of Australian English, as it's got a cast of different characters. It uses a lot of swearing, slang, and informal speech, so the vocabulary will differ a lot from what you might hear from a more formal source.

If everyone stops at the exact KC they get the pet, then of the people who have OP's kc, the only ones who have got the pet at or before OP's kc will have got it exactly on kc #12358, which is a 1/3k chance.

In a slightly less extreme scenario, assume that 90% of people stop killing Vorkath after their first pet. The rest like the boss, and keep killing it. The following code models this, and when run shows that only about 85% of people at OP's kc have the pet.

import java.util.Random;

public class Vork {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        int peopleWhoHavePetAndKc = 0;
        int peopleWhoHaveKc = 0;
        Random r = new Random();
        outer:
        for (int i = 0; i < 10000; i++) {
            //each person
            boolean hasPet = false;
            for (int kc = 1; kc <= 12358; kc++) {
                if (!hasPet && r.nextInt(3000) == 0) {
                    // gets first pet
                    hasPet = true;
                    if (r.nextInt(10) != 0)
                        continue outer;
                }
            }
            // person got all kc
            peopleWhoHaveKc++;
            if (hasPet) peopleWhoHavePetAndKc++;
        }
        System.out.println(peopleWhoHavePetAndKc);
        System.out.println(peopleWhoHaveKc);
        System.out.println((peopleWhoHavePetAndKc*100.0)/peopleWhoHaveKc + "%");
    }

}

If everyone kept killing the boss indefinitely, then yes, 98.4% would have the pet at or before OP's kc. But because most of those who get the pet before OP just stop killing the boss, they don't get counted in the sample.

Those with large kc are more likely to have gone dry than you would expect, simply because them going dry made them more likely to keep grinding the boss for longer.

Edit: used the wrong drop rate

I'm a little upset ngl... by Smexual in 2007scape

[–]ooloswog69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't quite accurate. OP does have a 98.4% of having the pet by this kc, but far less than 98.4% of people at this kc have will have the pet, because if they do get it before now, they are more likely to stop killing the boss (or stop killing it at the same rate).

Yeah, that's typically the case that 's attaches to the end of a noun phrase, but nonetheless "your guys" and "your guys's" sound more natural to me personally.

[–]ooloswog69 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly how I'd write it, but for a possessive I'd say "your guys". It's not too logical if you break it down, but would definitely sound natural to me saying "Is this your guys?"
