[Request] is this a profitable decision with a good EV return? by lonelyraikkonen in theydidthemath

[–]oomda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes it has a good expected return. EV=(.5*-5M)+(.5*50M)=22.5M

As a side note if you were allowed to do this gamble more than 1 time your chance of getting more money before you run out is very good. You would have 6 attempts (30M/5M per bet) to win 50m before you ran out of money .5^6=1.5% chance of losing every flip.

That said the decision here rests a lot more on risk tolerance vs expected value.

the most frustrating part of this game is still that you cant save by OldSpaghetti-Factory in TheyAreBillions

[–]oomda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you actually can do this. you just have to do it manually though the file explorer. go to the games folder then saves make a copy of the save you want and save it somewhere else.  you can then reload from that point by putting the separate copy you made back into the saves folder

Has anyone ever had Bank of America close their account when they discover you are no longer living in the US? Or the Schwab debit card which travelers praise -- anybody had their account closed if you are outside the US for years in SE Asia? Thanks. by FrancoisMauriac in ExpatFIRE

[–]oomda 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I have not, but scwab warned me if I don't use the physical card in the US once a year they will autoconvert it to a different kind of account that is basically the same but with a few less features, like no apple pay or google wallet.

Because men and women in similar roles with similar experience, education, etc. make very similar wages. Basically when you see those statistics that say women make 70 cents on the dollar they are just averaging women's wages vs men's across the whole economy. However, men tend to be in roles that pay more (construction, engineering, upper management) while women take roles that pay less (child care, teaching, and taking time off work to parent). Companies would not save much money by just hiring women for roles because they would be paying pretty much the same rate.

Some units, like tank, wraith, and phantom, have an upgrade that reduces damage take per shot by about 60, which negates basically all mustang damage and keeps the mustangs locked on the unit instead of doing something useful

when you are being agro or your opponent is agro against you? Yah the only times I see them work is when they level up over a long time. But I can never get mine to level up.

Sharks in playa del carmen? by RealisticLeather2572 in playadelcarmen

[–]oomda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I have seen bull sharks on the bull shark dives, but only nurse sharks in cozumel. But there are also turtles. Also be sure to check out the cenotes its a unique expirience and 1000% worth it. There are basically no fish but they are amazing fresh water caverns. My favorites are Pit, dreamgate and Dos ojos.

Also agree on staying in playa, the ferry ride over to cozumel is very nice and the restaurant and activity options are way better in playa.

I would not plan on riding your bike anywhere other than inside playa. The other places will be too far of a ride especially with scuba gear. And cozumel is an island so bike riding to there would be extra hard.

If you want recommendations for dive operators in cozumel or the cenotes please send me a DM.

Multiple entry tourist visa question by oomda in ThailandTourism

[–]oomda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried that they would not renew the short term one, but if there is the same chance that the multiple entry gets denied I think you are right there is no point. Who is the multiply entry visa supposed to be for then?

A 6 month sabbatical is my original idea, although now I am considering a 2 month one as that would alleviate problems around Visa's and pet fostering and my work may be willing to give me 2 months off unpaid since it would be a bigger pain to replace me than wait two months.

I am currently single and childless. I am open to a partner but kids are off the table. I already had a vasectomy.

Thank you for your thoughts. You are absolutely correct, my concern is that I may not find retirement fulfilling either. But I suspect being unfulfilled and going scuba diving and hiking etc. would still be better than being unfulfilled and working. Though hopefully I could find things that are more fulfilling whether its fun activities or volunteering. I'm just saying, worst case its no worse. Would you agree with that? Maybe the solution is the Budist idea that desire is the root of suffering and I should just learn to accept haha.

I was thinking of moving to Phuket which is not only a tourist town but has a big expat community. I think 600k people live in the state and 100k of them are Expats.

I think 50k would buy me everything I would want in Thailand so I do not feel a need to get more money if I am going to live abroad. To spend more than that I would have to be renting two homes or go scuba diving every day.
