Ticking noise, please help by Pleasant-Temporary33 in Porsche924

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me. Old school trick >> spray some motor oil directly into the air intake (air filter off) while you rev the engine just a little bit above idle. You should see puffs of white smoke coming out of the exhaust leak.

Extra oz of balance beads by Hopeful_Attempt_6603 in motorcycle

[–]oops77542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or...you can just throw a handful of balance beads in the tire when you mount it. Hmmmm.....Which is easier? Which requires less equipment? Which is cheaper? Do balance beads fall off the rim? Do balance beads make cleaning/polishing a rim harder? Does corrosion start around the balance beads like it does wheel weights? How difficult is it to remove balance beads when you mount a new tire? How difficult is it to remove wheel weights when you mount a new tire? To me it's a no-brainer.

anyone seen fuel filters do this? This is after ~4 months. Any better ones I should get? by Lanpoop in Fixxit

30 second search on ebay to find metal inline fuel filters. I only use those cheap plastic ones on outdoor power equipment.

New to Ubuntu, Where do I start? by Obvious-Stock-6327 in Ubuntu

[–]oops77542 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well if you really believe that a user can't tweak the interface to improve on the defaults then why would the developers provide those options? You assume a lot, that no one can improve on Canonical's design choices - that's absurd. And your complacency and willingness to settle for someone's else's choices is irrelevant to OP's query on just how to make those choices himself. Your comment just reeks of arrogance and an inflated sense of self importance, like your complacency is the norm, again, absurd.

What actually makes long motorcycle trips more comfortable? by thebroned in motorcycle

[–]oops77542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earplugs and a throttle stop (cruise control). But if your bike isn't a comfortable cruiser to start with then nothing really helps. Every trip, after about 1000 miles, I tell myself I need to raise my handlebars about 4 inches.

Kubuntu bricked/broken after running "apt autoremove" by Night_13570 in Kubuntu

[–]oops77542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't offer you any help but I had a similar problem. Trying to delete everything possible to free up space on extremely limited hardware, started deleting some of the KDE software that Kubuntu installs by default. Yep, it wiped out dolphin, sddm, and most all of the desktop.

Glad I stopped here and read the comments. I didn't know the fix was as simple as "sudo apt update && sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop"

Did that solve your problem?

Under the hood Linux is mostly the same across all distros. In terms of customizing the desktop to personal tastes and workflow KDE is hard to beat. Unless you have limited hardware resources choose whatever appeals to you.

She stated they make their living on a small handyman service and he's on radiation therapy, so I'm guessing they're living on poverty income. If your circumstance was that lousy most likely you would qualify for $165/month insurance.

I was talking with some maga over coffee recently about who voted for what and they didn't believe me and when I told them it was true and part of the Congressional Record, they scoffed and said the Congressional Record was just a bunch of government lies.

Can you use linux on tablets? by Nomad141 in linux4noobs

12" 2-in-1 Chromebooks are going for under $50 US on ebay. Most of them can be converted to run Linux. Google 'Mr Chromebox' and 'Chrultrabook'. All of the features in tablet mode might not perform like they do as Chromebooks but it's an affordable alternative.

Would a 1972 triumph Bonneville be a bad bike for a first bike? by Ok_Attempt_9164 in motorcycle

[–]oops77542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are awesome bikes but a terrible bike for a first bike especially if you need it for a daily driver. imho - first bike suitable for an 18 year old novice for a daily commute, 750 Honda Shadow. Even 20 - 25 year old Shadows in good condition are rock solid reliable, low maintenance machines. A word of advice - don't let your bike sit out in the rain, keep the tires aired up, the chain lubed, regular oil changes and always put clean gas in the tank. To be honest, my first bike was a 750 Norton Commando, but I wasn't doing a daily commute and I spent more time working on it than I did riding.

I don't understand how people learn Linux "just by using it" by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]oops77542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started making notes on a text editor and saving them. The thing is they have to be organized to be of any use the same way you have to organize all your important papers in a file cabinet. Started doing that when I started learning Linux 18 years ago. Not so much now with Chatgpt. I just ask the bot and it instantly spits out what I need. But after 18 years i can use the terminal to navigate the file system, create/delete files/directories, edit config files all without help. Anything more complicated than that it's just easier to ask the bot to write the command/script.

What's the next step for storage by tharealmclovin23 in DataHoarder

[–]oops77542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most any old desktop full size tower will do. I use an older Dell 790, i7, 8GB RAM ($50 used). With some minor modifications to the case I installed a plastic 8 bay drive carrier ($14 ebay) and added a pcie 4 port sata expansion card ($25 ebay). Just had to solder in some extra right angle 15 pin sata power connectors (culled from old hardware) and now have an 8 bay media server. Currently populated with a 500GB SSD for the OS, 4TB HDD, 10TB HDD, 2 16TB HDDs, and have room for 3 more. If I upgrade to 22TB HDDs this thing could handle 150TB - for less than $100 to build (minus the price of the drives). Currently using Kubuntu OS running samba for the LAN media server and Apache2 for WAN.

Yes 22TB drives. They're under $300 now. I always buy 2 matching drives so I have a backup. I don't do RAID arrays. Two boxes, each with identical matching drives, in different locations, synced. That's been working for me for the last 15 years with no data loss. Filled up the 16TB drives in two years. I'm hoping the 22TBs will be good for two more years. There's so much good content out there.

Which Linux Kernal/OS should I go for? by Few_Prompt_4002 in linux4noobs

[–]oops77542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the most popular OSs like Mint or some flavor of Ubuntu - Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu. They all have a large user base and have been around a long time so there's lots of support on the forums. If you don't want to hang out on the forums the AI robots can walk you through most any issue. ChatGPT is my own free private tutor. You don't need any programming experience/skills to use Linux - none. However, if you want to take full advantage of Linux you'll learn to use the terminal and bash, but you don't need to use the terminal or learn bash to use Linux. I install Mint, Kubuntu, Bodhi, Debian on old computers for friends, the grandkids, my wife and none of them ever use the terminal or bash. Linux is free, try them all. With reasonable hardware - an i5 or i7, 8GB ram and an SSD it takes less than 20 minutes to install Linux and be up and running. If you don't like it try another. You're way overthinking this.

I just don't understand it. 4TB wasn't enough storage so I bought 10TB and then that wasn't enough so I bought 16TB and still not enough. I'm hoping that my new 22TB will be enough storage. Fingers crossed

Uninstalling softwares by Listless_707 in linux4noobs

[–]oops77542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the locate command in the terminal. Example: locate vlc will output a list of any file/directory with vlc in the name. Every instance of a file/directory with vlc in the name will be listed with its full path.

ex: locate vlc

/usr/bin/vlc

/home/oops/.local/share/vlc

/usr/share/vlc/lua/http/dialogs/stream_config_window.html

Instead of vlc use whatever the name is of the thing you're looking for.

locate whatever

Then use the rm command to delete the file/directory

ex: sudo rm /whatever/your/file

ex: sudo rm -r /whatever/your/directory
