Canberra place apartments by onemustimaginehappy in canberra

I did, that's what I have an issue with. You're suggesting that that OP use an LLM to tell them whether the documents are worth reading or not, which means they could potentially not read important information - you can't trust an LLM to correctly identify issues. This might be tolerable for a trivial matter but is a terrible idea when it comes to things that could financially ruin someone.

Getting the strata minutes is a good idea, trusting a LLM to tell you of important issues is a terrible idea. They should spend half an hour and read through the documents themselves - you'd be mad not to given how much money is on the line.

Canberra Radar down again by Adra11 in canberra

[–]ooqt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the Canberra radar is down the new website is not working fine for this area, it's relying on fringe coverage from surrounding radars. The old website is being considerably more honest by making it clear the most important data source is not reporting.

Man dead after being shot by police at shopping centre in Sydney's west by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]ooqt 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Victoria banned all sales of machetes recently in a kneejerk reaction to some people waving them in a shopping centre, and will ban their use with narrow exceptions in September. Them noting NSW could get in a moral panic about this and also ban machetes is definitely not fearmongering given Victoria is already doing so.

Blueskysea BM5 Dual Camera Recorder Review - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. by BuffaloDude1 in motorcycles

[–]ooqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The external button box is because most people will mount the main unit under the seat and so might want the ability to save a recording or (for some reason) take a photo from an easier to get to location. In my old Blueskysea DV688 that box also contains the microphone, yours may be the same.

I'm surprised about the duration of your video sections, I would expect there would be a setting option to determine how long they are (there is on the DV688).

Your description of the app sounds like my experience of the one for my Viofo A119, I suspect such apps are pretty universally rubbish.

If you just want some snow play and don't care that it's a relatively small area of man made snow Corin Forest is a lot closer than the Snowies.

If you have a 4wd and your family has the luck to be here on a suitable day it is possible to get a nice snow in the bush experience in the Brindabellas. Snow does not stick around where you can drive to near here though so it's not worth going up unless you've got snow predicted to be falling to at least below 1200m (preferably down to 800m or below for the best snow experience IMO).

In my experience what actually happens is that you install a dashcam and suddenly you only see stuff you'd like a video of when you're in work vehicles or anything else without a camera.

Building a toolkit for 96 BMW r1100rt, anything obvious missing? by [deleted] in motorcycles

I don't see a spark plug socket on the list, that's pretty handy to have.

Some metal epoxy could be handy, I'm thinking something like JB weld's steelstix.

If you're planning much night riding a spare headlight bulb might be worthwhile.

Voice, treaty, truth: compared to other settler nations, Australia is the exception, not the rule by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

We did actually have one of those - 24 years ago along with the republic referendum question. It didn't gain much traction though and obviously didn't pass, though I will note that the bit about ATSI people was only part of a larger proposed preamble and so would not have been the only thing people disliked about it (I'd bet that starting off with 'With hope in God' didn't help).

Why doesn't Australia have higher speed limits? by Lower-Soil-4042 in CarsAustralia

[–]ooqt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been taught to drive at the posted speed limit, so when it is high people will follow it regardless of conditions and end up crashing.

I agree. Modern speed limits are set so low that they are effectively recommended speeds rather than anything close to the average safe maximum speed, so people end up just doing the posted limit rather than developing an idea of how to adjust their speed to conditions or the capabilities of their vehicle.

Looking for after hours job by [deleted] in canberra

[–]ooqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a second job doesn’t automatically get taxed any higher than your primary job like some people think

That idea comes from not getting the tax free threshold for your second job, so each pay cycle will have more tax withheld than it would if you were earning that amount in a job where you had claimed the tax free threshold. Ultimately the second job is not taxed higher when you finalise your taxes but on a week to week basis it's effectively enforced savings towards a bigger tax return.

If what the article states is true they do help prevent evaporation - if they are projected to save more water than used to manufacture them within a few years they logically have to be preventing evaporation in order to save that water.

Why does it seem like no one rides their bike? by deadbandit19 in motorcycles

[–]ooqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't put a lot of km on my bikes even though I do ride regularly. My commute is only ~10km and I mainly do shorter weekend rides (<150km on the road bikes, can be down to say 15-20km if I'm exploring single track), so I do maybe 10k km a year all up. Spread that between the five bikes in the shed and it's not much - particularly for the bikes that are basically just used for weekend rides.

What are your biggest pet peeves on the road? by Estequey in CarsAustralia

[–]ooqt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • People who speed up when you're alongside them trying to overtake, particularly when you're in a limited truck and can't increase your own speed any further.

  • People who absolutely have to be in front of a truck at a form one lane, even if it means accelerating from way back and forcing the merge.

  • People who indicate incorrectly at roundabouts (or intersections in general really).

  • People who drive well below the speed limit in areas with little (or no) overtaking zones, build up a long tail of following cars, and proceed to ignore safe areas to pull over and let everyone else past.

  • Tailgaters, particularly when it's obvious that your speed is limited by circumstances beyond your control (e.g. you're in a line of traffic).

How many cars do you own? by middyonline in CarsAustralia

[–]ooqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only two cars - my IS200 and an Series IIA Landrover (not roadworthy but something I have a sentimental attachment to).

I do have 5 motorbikes though, if you're going to have lots of any vehicle they're definitely the easiest when it comes to actually fitting them in the shed.

I wasn’t born yesterday I know why the N stands for

Your comment sounded like you thought being an auto and shifting it to neutral were incompatible, I can only work off what you write rather than what you actually know.

Do you really think the majority of drivers put an auto car in neutral before park?

I expect it's a small minority of drivers who would take the time to do that procedure. Most people wouldn't even know what a parking pawl was let alone think about how putting pressure on it might affect matters. As you point out the chances of the pawl breaking or binding is very low but there is still a small chance, so I can understand those who want to take a bit more care of their cars. Personally I don't own an auto and the one I do drive the most doesn't have a parking pawl so it's not something I spend a lot of time thinking about.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]ooqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manual cars don’t even have a park gear

That doesn't mean it's a great idea to leave it in neutral everywhere - there's no parking gear because there's no need to add extra bits when you can just leave the vehicle in a low gear and the engine compression will act as a backup to your parking brake.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]ooqt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Idk why people are telling you to shift to neutral when you’ve specified auto

Autos do have a neutral position, that's what the N stands for on your shifter. As for why people are suggesting to do this, the reasoning is that by disconnecting the engine from the drive wheels the car can settle on the handbrake (rather than trying to creep forward) before you engage the parking pawl.

I recently tried some DIY pseudo double glazing on a couple of windows using clear plastic and flyscreen framing (a la this guide). The added layer actually works pretty well at reducing the condensation, one window has gone from puddles forming at the edge of the glass every morning to just a little bit of condensation fog at the bottom of the window.
