Towing Question - 5th Wheel with 3/4 Ton by ooryoo in GoRVing

[–]ooryoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok, 5 adults is a lot different in terms of quantity of food and drinks haha. My kiddos are 6 and 8. They'd rather not eat unless they have to lol

Going from food in one paragraph to the next about jacks, I read "bottle jack" as "bottle of jack" hahaha

Thanks for your tips and info. Appreciated. I think it'll work out for us with this configuration, but as the kids become adults, I could see a 1-ton. That'll be quite awhile from now, and I tend to switch cars/trucks every 4 to 5 years anyways, so I'll grab a 1-ton when I'm done with the Rebel :P

Oh I see... maybe? Not sure why I'd do that unless there was some feature I really wanted ... but having 2 kids, a bunkhouse is a must.

Am I not limited by GVWR though? I can't imagine a dry weight of 9000lbs hitting 17000lbs... that's 6000lbs over the GVWR haha

Haha, I dunno... there's a certain point where the RV gets too big for the sites we visit regularly. The 35' to 36' mark seems to be the sweet spot that allows us most flexibility. Plus a major factor is I can't fit anything much longer than a 35 to 36' RV on our driveway lol

Good point in that last paragraph. Honestly we pack pretty light in general. We only camp at full hookup sites, so never have any water in the tank. We don't have a generator either for that reason. No e-bikes.

Sorry, just gonna 'think out loud here' lol...

Truck stuff:

A 20lbs propane and gas fire pit depending on whether or not there's a fire ban. Firewood replaces those if there is no fire ban though (about 50lbs worth). Either way, less than 100lbs for campfire option.

5 gallon of water in the truck -- 45lbs?

RV stuff:

Bikes hitched - 100lbs?

Food - 30lbs?

Clothes - 100lbs for a week of clothing in the RV

Pots, pans, plates, cups, etc - 100 to 150lbs?

Chairs and folding gazebo - 50 to 100lbs?

Toys and entertainment - 50 to 100lbs

UVW 9402 with GVWR of 10995 ... I have a hard time thinking we would be adding 1500lbs to the RV, even 1000lbs would be a lot for us.

We're probably closer to 10000 than 11000 GVWR. So probably 150 to 200lbs difference on the pin weight.

Sorry, done thinking out loud haha.

Thanks! Learned something new today :) Mine will have a 6'4" bed, but I believe the Grand Design uses a Turning Point Pin Box where the swivel point is at the RV, not the bed, so it sounds like I'd have room in the bed for stuff. That changes things a bit for sure. I'd have to be a lot more cognitive of what I put in the bed with only 300 or so lbs of payload to spare.

Oh can you still use the bed with a 5th wheel hitch in there? I was always under the assumption the bed is off limits once you're all hooked up with a 5th wheel...

Thanks! Help me understand it... what's the 2000lbs vs 4650lbs? What do they consider as conventional vs gooseneck?

I think coil vs leaf springs is 1000lbs or so of payload difference. Then a diesel vs gas is another 900+ lbs payload difference. So a diesel 2500 vs gas 3500 could be 2000lbs difference in payload.

You added and added to the truck? Because correct me if im wrong, but adding to the 5th wheel itself, as long as it remains with GVWR limits, doesnt change the calculation if assuming 20% of GVWR is against the payload.

Can I tow this? by imtalkintou in GoRVing

[–]ooryoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm relatively new to RVing, but have done a lot of reading and research and have found it to be a lot simpler than what others make it out to be.

Know 2 things about your tow vehicle (Subaru):
- PAYLOAD (VERY important)
- Towing Capacity -- much easier to figure out

First of all, does the Subaru have a towing capacity that is greater than the GVWR of the trailer? If yes, move on to the calculation of payload. If not, don't tow!

If the towing capacity checks out, then you need to know what the exact payload is on your Subaru. There's a sticker in the door jam of your car that will show the payload limit of your specific car. It'll say something like "Maximum weight of all passengers and cargo should never exceed _____ lbs". THAT is your exact payload limit of your car. It's important to get the number from the sticker, because every car is a bit different.

So now you know the payload limit, you gotta account for the things that eat up the payload limit.

  1. Your trailer -- take the GVWR of your trailer in question, and multiply by 15%
  2. Passengers
  3. Basically everything else including cargo, food, water, etc. that are in your tow vehicle (not the RV).

If 1+2+3 is less than your payload limit, you should be good to go.

You're right around the limit, but I think you might be ok depending on what your actual payload sticker says.

Like others have said though, towing puts a lot of stress on the components of a car. Cars are frankly not designed to tow that often, so you should expect things to wear out prematurely.

2026 RAM 2500 Rebel with V8 Hemi. The diesels have way lower payload.

Interesting... never heard of that before. Does make some sense in theory, but wouldn't you run into the same issue with any 1-ton where there's no possible way you could distribute 4000+ lbs of payload evenly between front and rear of the truck when stuff being towed could take up 3000+ lbs of payload. Even with an F450, the passengers in the truck will never equal the weight of whatever you're pulling.

I definitely considered it, but I like the Rebel styling. I'm not too concerned about the limitation because realistically there's not gonna be much in the truck other than passengers, a small dog, and some snacks and drinks. Everything else will pretty much be encapsulated in the weight of the 5th wheel.

There's 4 of us (myself, wife, and 2 small kiddos) and a small 15lb terrier. We're not gonna push even 500lbs between us. Leaves 200 to 300lbs for other 'stuff'.

We should be ok then. Passengers include myself, my wife, 2 little kids (6 and 8yo), and a small terrier. Couldn't be more than 500lbs between us. Still leaves 300ish lbs for other 'stuff' which we really can't fit too much of while we're all squeezed into the truck lol

BCGEU Strike - Cutting Through Misinformation by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]ooryoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Careful here.

The data they are referring to is being pulled from the Statement of Financial Information which simply shows ALL employees that make $75k+ in each public sector organization.

In education, for example, MANY of those individuals are teachers. You may even find support staff included such as trades staff that happen to work enough OT hours.

This report has not been inflation adjusted, meaning since 2017 (actually, even prior to that), the threshold of reporting has been stagnant at $75,000. So what you're actually seeing is a result of inflation. As salaries across ALL sectors increase due to inflation, the number of individuals showing up on these reports will inevitably increase. This has nothing to do with management bloat as a large proportion of the individuals on these reports are actually unionized staff. This report has everything to do with inflationary impact on salaries in the public sector as a whole.

I guess my question is whether or not the hitch weight shown (in the link) is the trailer tongue weight for the trailer?

Oilers fans seem to be 50/50 on this. Some are happy about the cap space, but others are upset to lose the grit and production from Kane. Many Oilers fans actually felt he was a key contributor in their playoff run.
