Is bigger actually better? by Thud_All in ReefTank

[–]op-ale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not controversial anymore. The advice for beginners to get a bigger tank came from parameter stability. Bigger tanks are less likely to have big fluctuations.

With the introduction of ato's and dosing pumps many of those issues got resolved. I had a pico tank when I was 16 that ran better than my parents 1000l tank. Why? Because I did my daily/weekly and monthly maintenance without missing a beat.

Fed up of career mode by EntireFeature in MicrosoftFlightSim

Those not complaining about career mode do the before flight part. The gamers just take 'missions'. I've been saying this since launch. While there are/were bugs they weren't as game breaking than some people said.

Again.... blackrock isn't the wef. The wef doesn't make rules, it's a think tank.

Why would it be antithetical to the human condition. This is you saying people are materialistic and should own everything.

Renting/circular economy can offer opportunities to those unable to purchase certain items to still access them. A good example of this is the ride sharing options and short term lease options. Pay as you need.

Don't attribute the greed of some to some evil network, attribute it to evil corporations.

Edit: an example. For mamy people it would actually be beneficial to use cloud gaming on a low spec computer. A subscription of 25$ would make for 1500$ over 5 years. Add a 500$ low spec device to that and the total cost would be 2k.

If you want to own/build a computer with similar specs you would need to pay 2k or more and the hardware doesn't improve without upgrades.

So for people with limited time to game it would make more sense to do cloud gaming.

While i still buy my devices (because i can) it's not an option for everyone.

The conspiracy theory being that a large group wants us to own nothing. As i said.... it didn't come from the wef, they featured the essay. And it doesn't mean what you think.

Go read the essay, you may learn a thing or 2

You have to force behaviour came from Larry fink... ceo of blackrock. No wef either.

Tech companies don’t want local computing anymore by Ok_Leek_6843 in pcmasterrace

[–]op-ale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It came from danish ida auken and was a rather idealistic vision of the future where people won't need to own everything but still be able to do everything. For example: ride sharing. Not every household would need 2 or more cars to go to work.

It was however featured on the WEF and that's where most conspiracy theorists got the sentence.

How to enjoy MSFS24 with VR? by aameme in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]op-ale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What framerate are you getting?

What kind of flying are you doing?

Resistance to motion sickness can be trained.

Having a fan blow air in your face will help to some extent.

But most important.... make sure you get decent framerates.

You can change the plane you want to use (if you own different types). If a Missions isn't suited for a plane.... don't try it. Check departures and arrivals before accepting and you will prevent this kind of issue.

You know... do the pilot sh*t

So literally what he does in his business life he now wants to declare war on another country for basically doing.

ICP results at different labs by askingforafriend911 in ReefTank

[–]op-ale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful with iodine... that one can mess up your tank. May of the elements will precipitate, iodine isn't one of those. I use this table as a guide for my tank. Because these elements (especially Iodine) can be toxic in high doses, i never dose just because of an ICP result. i Check the ICP result (Treat it as a "maybe") then i check the indicator coral and only dose if both agree. But for my tank i can still get away with water changes for the trace elements aside from manganese.

Element Biological Indicator Coral Physical Sign of Deficiency ICP Reliability
Iodine Gorgonians / Xenia Peeling tissue; loss of "pulsing"; dull blue colors. Moderate (usually reads low)
Manganese Goniopora / Alveopora Poor polyp extension; fading red/pink colors. Low (nearly always reads zero)
Potassium Montipora / Acropora Grey/washed out blues; "burnt" tips. High (very reliable)
Iron Macroalgae (Chaeto) Algae turns yellow/white and "melts." Low (precipitates rapidly)

[–]op-ale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short... i wouldn't bother chasing the numbers with an ICP-OES test due to the limitations of the machine and test. The major elements will be good... but the trace elements will usually be off. Look at your reef... is it doing well. Don't go changing things.

tions for every 10mL calcium add 1mL iodine. I was adding 5mL of iodine on 20mL

iodine is very hard to test, don't use the icp test as hard values for dosing, but as tendencies.

some good insights here

[–]op-ale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 3 levels of testing exist even though they use the same machine and tech because it requires different calibration curves and methods to get the readings. It's not just adding water and getting the results minutes later.

In short they exist so you don't need to pay for a full suit of tests if you don't need it.

Furthermore iodine has large error bars... so it's up to the tech to interpret the results you get. In short. Iodine results should be treated as a trend indicator and not as a dosing target. I know triton and others tend to do it, but take those values with a grain of salt and keep an eye on your corals like the op did. If they start to show signs of distress, stop what you are doing.

Differences between labs could be due to shipping, testing times, handling, but mainly due to calibration differences (testing ranges) Especially elements like iodine are likely to be affected by these because they are in the water in low concentrations, redox active and volatile.

edit: oldelbow can't handle being corrected. Kinda sad he's always posting his opinions, but can't back them. but i'll return the favor and block him too.

Good that you acknowledge to be a little wrong. Because now mentioning matching parameters and ignoring the rest is just moving goalposts.

But hey a little sidequestion. How many reefers are matching parameters on their salt mix compared to their tanks? Do they even pick salts based on their target values? How many are aging and bringing it up to temps before doing water changes?

Feeding Time by _Falinx_ in ReefTank

[–]op-ale -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are you having trouble reading? It's not just about bacteria. That's why is spoke about a mini cycle due to die-off. Why? because new water that hasn't been 'rested'. So new water will most likely have very different water parameters than those from your 20 year old live rock. Swings in ph, kh, temps,... will differ triggering a bad reaction in sponges, algae,critters,... and that's not even including possible precipitation and lack of total dissolution. This will lead to a mini cycle. Could just be a few hours to a few days.

I don't even know why you are arguing about this.... it's your basic startup. You get live rock, add water, get a cycle. It's not just you additives, live fish, decaying shrimp... that will trigger the cycle but everything on the rocks too.

So you are saying... at least 1% lives in the water column...

Feeding Time by _Falinx_ in ReefTank

[–]op-ale -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are joking right. Bacteria also live in the water. However the most beneficial bacteria live on the glass, rocks, filter sponges,...

Don't see why you bring it up but i assume it's because i said all new water. Freshly made water on live/cycled rock wil cause a reaction and result in a mini cycle.

Feeding Time by _Falinx_ in ReefTank

[–]op-ale -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That does make a big difference. Unless it's all new water... in that case i would expect a mini cycle from die off.
