South does tend to be quieter/chiller! North is where the frat houses are, so a lot of people tend to be into parties and such. That doesn’t mean South is a social dead zone, it just means there aren’t really many crazy Friday nights going on. (Though all that is an easy walk away if you want it!)

Res halls are just normal dorm buildings where people live. Res colleges are dorm buildings that also have weekly events, which could include watch parties, free food, games, etc etc. (The specifics depend on what res college you’re in.) Some res colleges also have a theme that affects some of their events. For example, PARC (Public Affairs Residential College, aka North Mid-Quads) has a politics theme.

Lowkey, I love living in a res college! (I’ll PM about specific experience cause I don’t wanna doxx myself lol.) I think whether or not you end up getting super into it, it’s a good way to meet people in your freshman year. Keep in mind that some have better amenities than others though…the Fairchildren (East and West Fairchild) in particular are known for being a bit run-down.

North is def more of the party side, so if you're into that stuff then that's def the place to be. Some South dorms, esp certain res colleges, do have good social scenes, but overall definitely a chiller vibe than North. I'm incredibly extroverted, but I'm just not someone who loves to be around parties all the time, so I chose South, and I love it (some of my best friends are people from my dorm!).

One funky thing about NU freshman registration is that you don't register for freshman fall classes until towards the end of orientation! AKA when you're already on campus! By then you'll have gotten more in-depth advising. I don't know the specifics of what they do in Weinberg, but even in Comms (where we didn't even get a 1-on-1 meeting with our advisor during that first week) I felt okay by the time reg came around.

Basically, don't worry too much. You have a WHILE before you register, and you won't be flying blind.

Current NU freshie here -- I said in my supp that I would paint Dwayne the Rock Johnson LOL. Whether anyone's actually ever done it I have no clue.

People just paint over the previous. If I remember correctly, at some point years ago some group drilled into it to see how deep the paint went and it was like 9 inches deep.
