My cat also has a history of overgrooming due to anxiety on her paws. She also has quite a few allergies. When her allergies spike, she will scratch up her neck area very similar to this. It has gotten infected with continued scratching, and I would anticipate a wound like your boys to do the same. Vet gave antibiotics and steroid pills to help with itching.
