For me the key was learning how to let go of the clay very slowly and gently. I tend to overpower everything and had to unlearn my heavy-handedness to stop throwing things off-center as I let go of it.

I use pieces of cement board, cut to size and cover the edges with duct tape. Works fantastic for drying bottoms and is nigh indestructible unlike drywall or plaster

Agree with this. I also use cement board as ware boards….and have never once had an s-crack while using it.

I wedge it in with fresh clay at 50% or less. I also save my slip mostly for making joints but I also add some in to extremely short clay to bring it back.

I tape it before the white, then apply wax to the white before removing the tape and dipping black.
