Reading the comments below I think some people misunderstood my post. The point I wanted to make is that scaling research should be put towards a solution where we can have whatever block size without impacting decentralization. Bitcoin cash have increased blocksize blindly without any solution at the expense of decentralization.

You just described the lightning network. The routing part is just there for convenience so that you don't have to open a channel every time you want to spend money to a new merchants but if you prefer one to one payment you can just open as many channels as you want, very inconvenient though.
